Book The Princeton Handbook of Multicultural Poetries

Download or read book The Princeton Handbook of Multicultural Poetries written by Terry V.F. Brogan and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-04-13 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawn from the acclaimed New Princeton Encyclopedia of Poetry and Poetics, the articles in this concise new reference book provide a complete survey of the poetic history and practice in every major national literature or cultural tradition in the world. As with the parent volume, which has sold over 10,000 copies since it was first published in 1993, the intended audience is general readers, journalists, students, teachers, and researchers. The editor's principle of selection was balance, and his goal was to embrace in a structured and reasoned way the diversity of poetry as it is known across the globe today. In compiling material on 106 cultures in 92 national literatures, the book gives full coverage to Indo-European poetries (all the major Celtic, Slavic, Germanic, and Romance languages, as well as other obscure ones such as Hittite), the ancient middle Eastern poetries (Hebrew, Persian, Sumerian, and Assyro-Babylonian), subcontinental Indian poetries (the widest linguistic diversity), Asian and Pacific poetries (Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, Mongolian, and half a dozen others), continental American poetries (all the modern Western cultures and native Indian in North, Central, and South American regions), and African poetries (ancient and emergent, oral and written).

Book Sidney s re writing of the Arcadia

Download or read book Sidney s re writing of the Arcadia written by Regina Schneider and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study presents a radically original theory of how and why Sir Philip Sidney's The Countess of Pembroke's Arcadia (1590) matured from a very conventional collection of lyric poems into a comprehensive prose narrative. Schneider grounds the multiple versions of Sidney's text in historical, narratological, and biographical contexts and in particular tracks the influence of international Renaissance literary theory on Sidney's revisions. The courtier-poet of Schneider's analysis emerges as a revolutionary figure in European literary history: She demonstrates that Sidney's revised Arcadia ought to be read as the practical demonstration of the theoretical problems of voice and narrative with which he wrestled during the composition of his Apology for Poetry, and ultimately argues that in the Arcadia Sidney surpasse d] his models and explore d] new ways of story-telling, ways that were to become indispensable for the rise of the novel in the eighteenth century. and scholars of the Renaissance, who will find in this study valuable information on the literary tools available not only to writers of prose fiction but also to contemporary dramatists such as Marlow and Shakespeare. But because of its focus on basic poetic structures, the text will also interest readers concerned with the development of English prose fiction in general and with the birth of the modern novel in particular.

Book Sir Philip Sidney

Download or read book Sir Philip Sidney written by Albert Charles Hamilton and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1977-06-23 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A general critical study of Sidney's life and works, first published in 1977: his life in relation to his works and both in relation to his age. In the late 1570s and early 1580s, when the literary scene in England was barren, Sidney emerged as the right man at the right moment to establish a national literature. In his Defence of Poetry he formulated a poetic which showed 'why and how' imaginative literature could be written in Protestant England; and in his poetry and prose, chiefly in Astrophel and Stella and the two versions of The Countess of Pembroke's Arcadia, he revealed that the English language was, as he claimed, 'indeed capable of any excellent exercising of it'. Through the influence of his personality, his critical insight, and his brilliant achievement in both poetry and prose - which Professor Hamilton in this study establishes through careful analysis - Sidney became the central figure of the English literary Renaissance.
