Book Field Trips in the Southern Rocky Mountains USA

Download or read book Field Trips in the Southern Rocky Mountains USA written by Eric P. Nelson and published by Geological Society of America. This book was released on 2004-06-01 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theme of the 2004 GSA Annual Meeting and Exposition, “Geoscience in a Changing World,” covers both new and traditional areas of the earth sciences. The Front Range of the Rocky Mountains and the High Plains preserve an outstanding record of geological processes from Precambrian through Quaternary times, and thus serve as excellent educational exhibits for the meeting. With energy and mineral resources, geological hazards, water issues, geoarchaeological sites, and famous dinosaur fossil sites, the Front Range and adjacent High Plains region provide ample opportunities for field trips focusing on our changing world. The chapters in this field guide all contain technical content as well as a field trip log describing field trip routes and stops. Of the 25 field trips offered at the Meeting, 14 are described in this guidebook, covering a wide variety of geoscience disciplines, with chapters on tectonics (Precambrian and Laramide), stratigraphy and paleoenvironments (e.g., early Paleozoic environments, Jurassic eolian environments, the K-T boundary, the famous Oligocene Florissant fossil beds), economic deposits (coal and molybdenum), geological hazards, and geoarchaeology.

Book Dating and Duration of Fluid Flow and Fluid rock Interaction

Download or read book Dating and Duration of Fluid Flow and Fluid rock Interaction written by John Parnell and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 1998 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fluid flow is fundamental to many geological processes, including the development of natural resources of hydrocarbons, ore deposits and water. Modelling of these processes requires information on the timing of fluid flow events and the interaction of fluids with surrounding rocks. In addition to isotopic methods, a diversity of approaches has been developed to assess the timing of events, including palaeomagnetism, fission track analysis and fluid inclusion studies. Many techniques also provide information on the duration of fluid flow events. The papers in this volume represent the range of approaches available to determine the dating and duration of fluid flow events and fluid-rock interaction: first overview of methods of dating fluid flow; examples of commercial application of dating methods; explanations of methodology suitable for advanced teaching; extensive bibliographies.

Book Celebrating 100 Years of Female Fellowship of the Geological Society Discovering Forgotten Histories

Download or read book Celebrating 100 Years of Female Fellowship of the Geological Society Discovering Forgotten Histories written by C.V. Burek and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2021-03-18 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Geological Society of London was founded in 1807. At the time, membership was restricted to men, many of whom became well-known names in the history of the geological sciences. On the 21 May 1919, the first female Fellows were elected to the Society, 112 years after its formation. This Special Publication celebrates the centenary of that important event. In doing so it presents the often untold stories of pioneering women geoscientists from across the world who navigated male-dominated academia and learned societies, experienced the harsh realities of Siberian field-exploration, or responded to the strategic necessity of the ‘petroleum girls’ in early American oil exploration and production. It uncovers important female role models in the history of science, and investigates why not all of these women received due recognition from their contemporaries and peers. The work has identified a number of common issues that sometimes led to original work and personal achievements being lost or unacknowledged, and as a consequence, to histories being unwritten.

Book Pathway to a Professorship

Download or read book Pathway to a Professorship written by Donald E. Hattin and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2014-01-21 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As an undergraduate student at UMass Don Hattin recorded in detail events which colored each day with the trials and triumphs of academic life. He recounts the low cost of attending college, fun and facts about dormitory life, seemingly endless drudgery of homework, unfounded fear of earning poor grades, and classes of great interest versus those without redeeming characteristics or content. Don describes the antics of dormitory life, which leave the reader wondering how and when studying was done. Don shares treasured memories of work in the College Store, where many humorous events occurred, and lively association with faculty and students in the Geology Department, where genuine camaraderie accompanied work in the classroom, laboratory and field. As a T.A. at the University of Kansas, Don discovered the joy of teaching and field work. His master’s thesis research on Cretaceous-age rocks was prompted by a future member of the National Academy of Science, leading initially to both fun and temporary futility of work on the Kansas prairie. At the doctoral level, Don was mentored by a world-famous paleontologist who was intimidating in the office but a mellow field geologist. Just once, Don challenged his mentor on identification of a fossil, and won! During this interval, a key geology faculty member departed, resulting in Don’s appointment as Instructor to teach two courses, thus enabling Don to gain skills needed when assuming a professional role. While interviewing in Ohio for a full time teaching position, Don received a call from the geology chairman at Indiana University, where a short visit resulted in offer of an Assistant Professorship. Don’s acceptance let to a career-long association with that institution.
