Book Industrial Medicine Desk Reference

Download or read book Industrial Medicine Desk Reference written by David F. Tver and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increased public concern over the control of environmental forces and industrial hazards has led to awareness for the need for improved conditions for all who work. Industry has expanded and developed new p'~ducts and new methods. A great many occupational diseases have accompanied this progress. Too much of the present data and knowledge have been obtained following accidents or sad experience. Thousands of women have died, have become acutely or chronically ill, and still others permanently disabled. Workers themselves have become keenly aware of potential hazards on their jobs, and public interest has developed to a point where articles are appearing on front pages of newspapers, business journals, and medical journals specifically related to occupational medicine. Special studies of chemicals, processes, and practices have been initiated by government agencies and by industry itself. Knowledge of increased liver cancer in vinyl chloride workers, the discovery of kepone, a pesticide produced under poor working conditions causing neurologic damage, the problems with asbestos, and the alarming occupational health problems reported among workers manufacturing "DBCP" (dibromochloropropane), a nematocid that has caused reproductive alterations in men from oligospermia to sterility, are well known. Not only have sterility and fertility become serious grounds for concern but also mutagenesis and teratogenesis, in addition to public anxieties about occupational carcinogens, a cause for worry.

  • Author : Elaine Draper
  • Publisher : Russell Sage Foundation
  • Release : 2003-01-30
  • ISBN : 1610441621
  • Pages : 410 pages

Download or read book The Company Doctor written by Elaine Draper and published by Russell Sage Foundation. This book was released on 2003-01-30 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To limit the skyrocketing costs of their employees' health insurance, companies such as Dow, Chevron, and IBM, as well as many large HMOs, have increasingly hired physicians to supervise the medical care they provide. As Elaine Draper argues in The Company Doctor, company doctors are bound by two conflicting ideals: serving the medical needs of their patients while protecting the company's bottom line. Draper analyzes the advent of the corporate physician both as an independent phenomenon, and as an index of contemporary culture, reaching startling conclusions about the intersection of corporate culture with professional autonomy. Drawing on over 100 interviews with company physicians, scientists, and government and labor officials, as well as historical, legal, and statistical sources and medical trade association data, Draper presents an illuminating overview of the social context and meaning of professional work in corporations. Draper finds that while medical journals, speeches, and ethical codes proclaim the independent professional judgment of corporate physicians, the company doctors she interviewed often expressed anguish over the tightrope they must walk between their patients' health and the corporate oversight they face at every turn. Draper dissects the complex position occupied by company doctors to explore broad themes of doctor-patient trust, employee loyalty, privacy issues, and the future direction of medicine. She addresses such controversial topics as drug screening and the difficult position of company doctors when employees sue companies for health hazards in the workplace. Company doctors are but one example of professionals who have at times ceded their autonomy to corporate management. Physicians provide the prototypical professional case for exploring this phenomenon, due to their traditional independence, extensive training, and high levels of prestige. But Draper expands the scope of the book—tracing parallel developments in the law, science, and technology—to draw insightful conclusions about changing conditions in the professional workplace, as corporate cultures everywhere adapt to the new realities of the global economy. The Company Doctor provides a compelling examination of the corporatization of American medicine with far-reaching implications for professionals in many other fields.

This book was released on 1991-05-02 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A book based on decades of occupational health experience in the industrial clinic setting This book focuses on the development and administration of independent facilities or departments devoted to the injured worker. Until recently, this area was a largely ignored aspect of occupational health. Now, solo practitioners, partnerships, small and large multispecialty groups, HMOs, and hospitals are showing tremendous interest in developing single purpose facilities or divisions related to this type of practice. Basic Occupational Medicine: A Guide to Developing Delivery Systems addresses the critical need for a guide that explains startup considerations, maintaining the operation, and caring for patients. Topics discussed include proper reporting and charting; the nature of examinations and screening; the role of the Physician's Assistant; working with in-plant nurses; and maintaining relationships with physicians in other departments and the community. A special section is devoted to starting up and operating a facility, including critical information such as advertising and marketing, staffing, equipment, and site location. The book also contains an index with samples of types of forms needed for this business. Basic Occupational Medicine: A Guide to Developing Delivery Systems will benefit administrators, hospital directors, group medical directors, urgent care center directors, physician's assistants, occupational health nurses, insurance carriers, and employers involved with industrial health clinics.
