Book The Democratic Class Struggle in Twenty Countries 1945 1990

Download or read book The Democratic Class Struggle in Twenty Countries 1945 1990 written by Paul Nieuwbeerta and published by Purdue University Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is well known that people's class position affects their voting behaviour. This 'democratic class struggle' occurs in all Western industrialized democracies. However, the strength of the relationship between class and voting behaviour differs from country to country, and in many the strength of that relationship has declined. This study analyses the levels of class voting in the various Western industrialised countries in the postwar period. In addition, it tests three specific explanations for variations in these levels between countries and periods of time. Moreover, attention is paid to the relationship between intergenerational class mobility and individual voting behaviour in these countries. For this purpose a large number of data on twenty western industrialised nations were collected and analysed.

Book Well being Sustainability and Social Development

Download or read book Well being Sustainability and Social Development written by Harry Lintsen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-06-14 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book examines more than two centuries of societal development using novel historical and statistical approaches. It applies the well-being monitor developed by Statistics Netherlands that has been endorsed by a significant part of the international, statistical community. It features The Netherlands as a case study, which is an especially interesting example; although it was one of the world’s richest countries around 1850, extreme poverty and inequality were significant problems of well-being at the time. Monitors of 1850, 1910, 1970 and 2015 depict the changes in three dimensions of well-being: the quality of life 'here and now', 'later' and 'elsewhere'. The analysis of two centuries shows the solutions to the extreme poverty problem and the appearance of new sustainability problems, especially in domestic and foreign ecological systems. The study also reveals the importance of natural capital: soil, air, water and subsoil resources, showing their relation with the social structure of the ‘here and now ́. Treatment and trade of natural resources also impacted on the quality of life ‘later’ and ‘elsewhere.’ Further, the book illustrates the role of natural capital by dividing the capital into three types of raw materials and concomitant material flows: bio-raw materials, mineral and fossil subsoil resources. Additionally, the analysis of the institutional context identifies the key roles of social groups in well-being development. The book ends with an assessment of the solutions and barriers offered by the historical anchoring of the well-being and sustainability issues. This unique analysis of well-being and sustainability and its institutional analysis appeals to historians, statisticians and policy makers.

Book Between Cross and Class

Download or read book Between Cross and Class written by Lex Heerma van Voss and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2005 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late nineteenth century in a number of continental European countries Christian associations of workers arose: Christian trade unions, workers' cooperatives, political leagues, workers' youth movements and cultural associations, sometimes separately for men and women. In some countries they formed a unified Christian labour movement, which sometimes also belonged to a broader Christian subculture or pillar, encompassing all social classes. In traditional labour history Christian workers' organizations were solely represented as dividing the working class and weakening the class struggle. However, from the 1980s onwards a considerable amount of studies have been devoted to Christian workers' organizations that adopted a more nuanced approach. This book takes stock of this new historiography. To broaden the analysis, each contribution compares the development in at least two countries, thus generating new comparative insights. This volume assesses the development of Christian workers' organizations in Europe from a broad historical and comparative perspective. The contributions focus on the collective identity of the Christian workers' organization, their denominational and working-class allegiances and how these are expressed in ideology, organization and practice. Among the themes discussed are relations with churches and Christian Democracy, secularization, the development of the Welfare State, industrial relations and the contribution to working-class culture. This volume is the result of a joint intellectual enterprise of the International Institute of Social History (IISG) in Amsterdam (Netherlands) and a group of scholars linked to the KADOC - Documentation and Research Centre for Religion, Culture and Society of the KU Leuven (Catholic University Leuven-Belgium).

Book Fundamental Principles of Communist Production and Distribution

Download or read book Fundamental Principles of Communist Production and Distribution written by Hermann Lueer and published by Arguments Against the Market. This book was released on 2018-09-23 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a tribute to the collective work of the Group of International Communists of Holland. Given the experiences with state communism in Russia, their "Fundamental Principles of Communist Production and Distribution," published in 1930, was an attempt to elaborate the economic basis of a communist society as outlined by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. Although their explanations have lost none of their original topicality, their text has remained a product of its time in the way they address the literature of that period. This paper therefore attempts to reintroduce the core statements of the "Fundamental Principles of Communist Production and Distribution" into the current debate on alternatives to capitalism.

Book Values in Western Societies

Download or read book Values in Western Societies written by Ruud de Moor and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-12-28 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The European Values Study is a large-scale, cross-national, and longitudinal survey research program on basic human values, initiated by the European Value Systems Study Group (EVSSG) in the late 1970s, at that time an informal grouping of academics. Now, it is carried on in the setting of a foundation, using the (abbreviated) name of the group European Values Study (EVS). The EVSSG aimed at designing and conducting a major empirical study of the moral and social values underlying European social and political institutions and governing conduct. A rich academic literature has now been created around the original survey, and numerous other works have made use of the findings.
