Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Arabic Authors: A Manual of Arabian History and Literature The following pages contain nothing new and nothing original, but they contain a good deal of information gathered from various sources, and brought together under one cover. The book itself may be useful, not, perhaps, to the Professor or to the Orientalist, but to the general reader, and to the student commencing the study of Arabic. To the latter it will give some idea of the vast field of Arabian literature that lies before him, and prepare him, perhaps, for working out a really interesting work upon the subject. Such still remains to be written in the English language, and it is to be hoped that it will be done some day thoroughly and well. It is gratifying to think that the study of Oriental languages and literature is progressing in Europe generally, if not in England particularly. The last Oriental Congress, held at Stockholm and Christiania the beginning of September, 1889, brought together a goodly number of Oriental scholars. Book A Brief History of Arabic Literature

    Book Details:
  • Author : George Nicolas El-hage, Ph.d.
  • Publisher : Createspace Independent Publishing Platform
  • Release : 2017-10-08
  • ISBN : 9781978048065
  • Pages : 374 pages

Download or read book A Brief History of Arabic Literature written by George Nicolas El-hage, Ph.d. and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2017-10-08 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the Middle Ages, the Arabs ruled the civilized world. They succeeded in conquering Arabia, Egypt, Iraq, Mesopotamia and Africa, parts of China, Spain, Sicily, Portugal, Turkey, Persia, Syria, Jordan and Lebanon. Had they not been stopped by Charles Martel at the famous and decisive battle of Tours-Poitiers in 732 A.D., the Arab conquest of the West would have spread into France and beyond and, consequently, would have changed the face of Europe and perhaps even shaped the modern world altogether. This book, in two carefully selected volumes, is intended to be a short history of Arabic literature. It provides the teacher with a quick summary and gives the beginning student a broad overview in chronological sequence of the historical and literary accomplishments of the Arab people from pre-Islamic times up to the Modern Era. Volume One covers the period from pre-Islamic Arabia to the end of the 'Abbaasid Era. Volume Two covers the period from the Arabs' occupation of Spain to the Modern Era. Of course, there already exist many excellent books that deal with this subject matter; however, the uniqueness and usefulness of this book (which is also presented to the curious and casual reader of Middle Eastern literature, especially if he is able to also read Arabic) lies in the fact that it not only provides interesting and didactic reading material, but it also has the following features that other similar books do not have: 1. The scope and timeline are so broad and comprehensive and spans the period from 500 A.D. - 1984 A.D., all between the covers of one book in two volumes. 2. The generous number of samples of poetry and prose selections from every poet or author mentioned in this book is included here in these two volumes in the original Arabic to illustrate the text and support the discussion on every poet and writer. Hence, the student of Arabic does not have to go searching for poetry or prose examples in order to understand or support an argument. In this way, he can immediately learn to appreciate a particular poet's poetry or writing.

Book The Arabic Language

Download or read book The Arabic Language written by Anwar G. Chejne and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 1968 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Arabic Language was first published in 1969. Minnesota Archive Editions uses digital technology to make long-unavailable books once again accessible, and are published unaltered from the original University of Minnesota Press editions. Arabic, with its rich literary heritage, is one of the major languages of the world. It is spoken by about one hundred million people inhabiting a wide and important area of the Middle East. Yet the language and its significant role in history are little known in the English-speaking countries except among specialists. This book will, it is hoped, help to introduce the language and demonstrate its importance to a wider audience. Professor Philip K. Hitti of Princeton University writes in the foreword: "Until recently Arabic studies in this country had been limited to the graduate level and confined to a few universities. Since World War II they have inched their way to the undergraduate curriculum of a small number of universities. But they are still top-heavy and anemic. They will so remain unless they send their roots deeper down into high schools and enlist the interest of a widening circle of nonspecialists. "Hence the value of this work by Professor Chejne. It is a commendable attempt to introduce the Arabic language, with its features and problems, to students and nonspecialists, to tell the story of its dramatic evolution from a tribal dialect to one of the few carriers of world culture, to indicate its unique relation to the religion of Islam and its role in the development of modern Arab nationalism. The book, written in a language intelligible to the layman, sums up what is already known and presents the contribution of the author."

Book Arab Women Writers

Download or read book Arab Women Writers written by Radwa Ashour and published by American University in Cairo Press. This book was released on 2008-11-01 with total page 798 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arab women's writing in the modern age began with 'A'isha al-Taymuriya, Warda al-Yaziji, Zaynab Fawwaz, and other nineteenth-century pioneers in Egypt and the Levant. This unique study-first published in Arabic in 2004-looks at the work of those pioneers and then traces the development of Arab women's literature through the end of the twentieth century, and also includes a meticulously researched, comprehensive bibliography of writing by Arab women. In the first section, in nine essays that cover the Arab Middle East from Morocco to Iraq and Syria to Yemen, critics and writers from the Arab world examine the origin and evolution of women's writing in each country in the region, addressing fiction, poetry, drama, and autobiographical writing. The second part of the volume contains bibliographical entries for over 1,200 Arab women writers from the last third of the nineteenth century through 1999. Each entry contains a short biography and a bibliography of each author's published works. This section also includes Arab women's writing in French and English, as well as a bibliography of works translated into English. With its broad scope and extensive research, this book is an indispensable resource for anyone interested in Arabic literature, women's studies, or comparative literature.
