This book was released on 2013-04-16 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection, Fairy Tales from the Arabian Nights presents a re-telling of some classic Middle Eastern and South Asian folk tales by E. Dixon – beautifully illustrated by John D. Batten. Whilst the narratives differ greatly in their origins, characters, and motifs – they all stem from the initial ‘frame story’ of the ruler Shahryār, and his wife Scheherazade. She tells a different tale each night, never revealing the ending – in order that the King may spare her life.... Tales within this book include: ‘The King of Persia and the Princess of the Sea’, ‘Prince Beder and the Princess Giauhara’, The Three Princes and Princess Nouronnihar’, ‘Prince Ahmed and the Fairy’, ‘Prince Camaralzaman and the Princess of China’, ‘The Loss of the Talisman’, ‘ The Seven Voyages of Sinbad the Sailor’ and others. John Dickson Batten (1860-1932) was a British painter, illustrator and print maker, who was a leading light in the Art Nouveau movement. He illustrated a series of fairy tale books written by Joseph Jacobs as well as this English language version of Arabian Nights, and Dante’s Inferno. His illustrations are strongly influenced by the printmakers of Japan and are characterised by an intense romanticism and refined technique. Presented alongside this text, Batten’s enchanting creations serve to further refine and enhance the classic Arabian storytelling. Book Arabian Nights or One Thousand and One Nights Andrew Lang New Arabian Nights R L Stevenson

Download or read book Arabian Nights or One Thousand and One Nights Andrew Lang New Arabian Nights R L Stevenson written by Robert Louis Stevenson and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2023-12-19 with total page 639 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This anthology unites the timeless allure of 'Arabian Nights or One Thousand and One Nights', translated and edited by Andrew Lang, with 'New Arabian Nights' by Robert Louis Stevenson, presenting an opulent tapestry of fantasy, adventure, and moral intricacies. The collection offers a panoramic view of not only the traditional tales that have fueled the imaginations of readers for centuries but also Stevenson's unique Victorian twist on the genre. These narratives span a gamut of literary styles from the mystical and whimsical, to gripping, suspense-filled dramas, showcasing the expansive range and adaptability of these stories across different cultural and temporal landscapes. The contributing authors, Lang and Stevenson, bring their distinct backgrounds to the compilation, reflecting the broader historical, cultural, and literary movements of their times. Lang's work as a folklorist and poet is evident in his sensitive approach to translation and adaptation, striving to maintain the spirit of the original tales. Stevenson, a luminary of the Scottish literary renaissance, imbues the collection with a darker, more complex psychological depth, expanding the narrative scope of the traditional tales. Together, these authors enhance and challenge our understanding of the 'Arabian Nights' stories, inviting readers to consider the thematic and stylistic shifts over time. For those intrigued by the power of storytelling and its ability to cross cultural boundaries, this anthology is an invaluable treasure. Readers are afforded the unique opportunity to traverse the rich landscapes of Middle Eastern folklore through the Victorian lens, gaining diverse perspectives on universal themes of morality, adventure, and human folly. This collection not only fosters a deeper appreciation for the art of storytelling across different periods but also encourages a dialogic engagement with the texts, making it an essential read for both aficionados of classic literature and newcomers eager to explore the storied tapestry of 'Arabian Nights'.

Book The Arabian Nights in Historical Context

Download or read book The Arabian Nights in Historical Context written by Saree Makdisi and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2008-11-13 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alf layla wa layla (known in English as A Thousand and One Nights or The Arabian Nights) changed the world on a scale unrivalled by any other literary text. Inspired by a fourteenth-century Syrian manuscript, the appearance of Antoine Galland's twelve-volume Mille et Une Nuits in English translation (1704-1717), closely followed by the Grub Street English edition, drew the text into European circulation. Over the following three hundred years, a widely heterogeneous series of editions, compilations, translations, and variations circled the globe to reveal the absorption of The Arabian Nights into English, Continental, and global literatures, and its transformative return to modern Arabic literature, where it now enjoys a degree of prominence that it had never attained during the classical period. Beginning with a thorough introduction situating The Arabian Nights in its historical and cultural contexts-and offering a fresh examination of the text's multiple locations in the long history of modern Orientalism—this collection of essays by noted scholars from 'East', 'West', and in-between reassesses the influence of the Nights in Enlightenment and Romantic literature, as well as the text's vigorous after-life in the contemporary Arabic novel.

Book THE ARABIAN NIGHTS ENTERTAINMENTS Complete Edition

Download or read book THE ARABIAN NIGHTS ENTERTAINMENTS Complete Edition written by Anon E. Mouse and published by Abela Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2017-12-24 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nobody knows how old the stories in this classic volume are, or who told them first. Noah’s grandchildren, the children of Ham, Shem and Japhet may have listened to them on the Ark. Hector's little boy may have heard them in the City of Troy, but it is certain that Homer knew them, and that some of them were written down in Egypt at about the time of Moses. Herein are 32 tales from the 1001 Arabian Nights compiled by Andrew Lang in which heroic figures such as Aladdin, Ali Baba, Sinbad, and others, whose luck and ingenuity carry them through perilous adventures. These were usually quests set by rulers, in which a young man was set a number of challenges to prove his mettle. Others adventures were the daring rescues of Princesses by valiant knights on white chargers - what else? Whatever the reason, the adventures and escapades in far-flung places will keep young readers enthralled for hours. The 65 illustrations by H. J. Ford give the stories added depth and meaning. As always, there are plenty of kings and queens, princes and princesses in these fairy tales, just because long ago there were plenty of kings in most countries. Now 'The Arabian Nights,' some of which, but not nearly all, are given in this volume, are only a sliver of the fairy tales of the East. The people of Asia, Arabia, and Persia told them in their own way, not only for children, but for grown-up people. There were no novels back then, nor any printed books, and definitely no internet or tablet PCs. But there were people whose profession it was to entertain and amuse men, women and children by telling tales. They travelled the country, from village to village, and told their stories, dressed them up and made the characters good Muslims, Hindus and Jews, living in Persia, Arabia or India. NOTE: I can remember reading 'The Arabian Nights' when I was six years old, in dirty yellow old volumes of small type with no pictures, and I hope children who read them with Mr. Ford's pictures will be as happy as I was then in the company of Aladdin and Sindbad the Sailor. Andrew Lang
