Verily the works and words of those gone before us have become instances and examples to men of our modern day, that folk may view what admonishing chances befell other folk and may therefrom take warning; and that they may peruse the annals of antique peoples and all that hath betided them, and be thereby ruled and restrained. Praise, therefore, be to Him who hath made the histo ries of the past an admonition unto the present! Now of such instances are the tales called A Thousand Nights and a Night, together with their far-famed legends and wonders. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories From the Arabian Nights: With an Introductory Note When we sit down at the breakfast-table we do not often stop to ask ourselves whence such common things as coffee and sugar, pepper and salt, have come to us, or how many and what various persons have been engaged in bringing them out of the ground and across the seas, in buying and selling them, and making a livelihood, that we ourselves may live more comfortably. It is one thing to enjoy the taste of our viands, and it is another pleasure to know something of their origin. In the same way we read such tales as The Arabian Nights, a common property of man kind, and rejoice in them; and there is a separate satisfaction in finding where they have come from, and what and whom we have to thank for the enjoy ment they afford. Book Stories From the Arabian Nights Classic Reprint

Download or read book Stories From the Arabian Nights Classic Reprint written by Michael Clarke and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-15 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories From the Arabian Nights In many of the stories mention is made of Haroun Alraschid. He was a great king who lived more than a thousand years ago in Bagdad, a city situated on the banks of the river Tigris, in the country now known as Turkey in Asia. The kings of Bagdad had the title of Caliph, a word which means "successor." They were so called because they were the successors of Mohammed, a celebrated teacher who founded the religion which since his time has prevailed in many parts of Asia, and Africa. His followers are called Mohammedans, and are also known as Mussulmans, or Moslems. They believe that Mohammed was a great prophet, and the chosen apostle of God. This belief they express in their prayers, which usually begin with these words: "There is no deity but God, and Mohammed is God's Apostle." The sacred book, or bible, of the Moslems is called the Koran, and they believe that what it contains was told to Mohammed by an angel sent down from heaven. The Caliph of Bagdad was head of the Mohammedan religion as well as king and ruler of the country. He was therefore addressed as "Commander of the Faithful," or "Prince of the Faithful," that is of those who believed in the prophet Mohammed. The chief minister of the Caliph was called the Vizier. Besides the Caliph there were other kings in Mohammedan countries. They were called Sultans, and were usually subject to the authority of the Caliph. The "Thousand and One Nights" has always been highly esteemed and admired in Europe and America as well as amongst the Arabs, who are great lovers of tales and romances. There is, perhaps, no other book of stories in existence which has afforded so much entertainment and delight to so many readers, old and young. Of course these stories are not true, but they give us a good deal of information as to the manners and customs of Eastern nations. Book excerpt: Lebanese author Wafa' Tarnowska opens a window into the Arab world with her magnificent new translation of eight stories from 'A Thousand and One Nights'. With bright, lush, stylized acrylic illustrations, this collection of eight stories from 'A Thousand and One Nights' is designed for reading aloud, but in contrast to many watered-down versions, these tales may find their best audience with older elementary students and middle-schoolers. The long introductory story, Shahriyar Meets Shahrazade, tells of the shah's discovery of his beloved wife's betrayal and his shocking decision to marry a new bride every day and then order her death. Then he meets and marries Shahrazade, who persuades Shahriyar to keep her alive by telling him a riveting story each night. This edition is notable for combining favourites such as Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp with less familiar tales such as The Diamond Anklet and The Speaking Bird and the Singing Tree Throughout, the spacious paintings capture the sense of the supernatural in daily life, including magical images of people taking flight above city, trees, and desert. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Thousand and One Days: A Companion to the Arabian Nights The present collection of Eastern Stories has been principally derived from the works of differ ent Oriental Scholars on the Continent, and little doubt can be entertained of the genuineness of their origin; while they have been carefully selected, and do honor to the good taste of their compiler. An acknowledgment is also due to him for 'his adherence to the good old orthography to which we have all been accustomed from our childhood, in the case of such titles as Caliph, Vizier, Houri, Genn, &c. As, however critically cor rect and learned the Spelling of Mr. Lane may be in his magnificent version of the Thousand and One Nights, and however appropriate to a work of so much research and value to Oriental students, it would have been alike fatiguing and out of char acter to have embarrassed a volume, simply in tended for the amusement of youthful readers, by a number of hard and unfamiliar words, difficult of pronunciation to all save the initiated; and for the pleasure of the young requiring translation fully as much as the narrative itself.
