Book Language Policy and Planning in the Mediterranean World

Download or read book Language Policy and Planning in the Mediterranean World written by Marilena Karyolemou and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-08-11 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Language Policy and Planning in the Mediterranean World is a collection of the best papers presented at the MedLPLP conference held at the University of Cyprus in 2009, enriched with invited contributions on the same topic. The book presents a panorama of situations with countries such as France, Germany, Cyprus, Malta, Italy, Spain, Poland, Turkey, Greece, Bulgaria, Albania, Romania and Serbia. It explores various aspects of the weight and ecology of the Mediterranean languages, discusses LPP in the light of international law and the protection of human rights, bilingual education and foreign language acquisition policies. It also addresses the issue of feminization in a broad range of Mediterranean languages comparing French, Italian, Spanish, and, for the first time, Standard and Cypriot Greek. Finally, the book also discusses language revival and renovation policies, language planning in the public space, as well as cases of micro-language management. The volume is an excellent source of information for scholars and students of LPP interested in the synchrony and diachrony of Mediterranean languages, in aspects of LPP activity in various Mediterranean countries and in specific LPP processes involving several languages within the area.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present collection of essays follows in the wake of recent work in cultural geography challenging the idea that maps are scientifically neutral entities, or that space, unlike time, is immobile. In defining space, place and geography as forms of textuality, the essays collected in this volume examine the ways in which postcolonial and metropolitan literary and filmic texts in French can at once inscribe and produce place and space, and thereby participate in forms of “discursive geographies.” Contributors: François Bon; Alexandre Dauge-Roth; Habiba Deming; Zakaria Fatih; Jeanne Garane; Patricia Geesey; Greg Hainge; Sirène Harb; Jean-Luc Joly; Chantal Kalisa; Michel Laronde; Valérie Loichot; Mary McCullough; Michael O’Riley; Pascale Perraudin; Walter Putnam; Antoine Stéphani; Abdourahman A. Book Discourses on Nations and Identities

Download or read book Discourses on Nations and Identities written by Daniel Syrovy and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2021-01-18 with total page 656 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third volume of the collected papers of the ICLA congress "The Many Languages of Comparative Literature" includes contributions that focus on the interplay between concepts of nation, national languages, and individual as well as collective identities. Because all literary communication happens within different kinds of power structures - linguistic, economic, political -, it often results in fascinating forms of hybridity. In the first of four thematic chapters, the papers investigate some of the ways in which discourses can establish modes of thinking, or how discourses are in turn controlled by active linguistic interventions, whether in the context of the patriarchy, war, colonialism, or political factions. The second thematic block is predominantly concerned with hybridity as an aspect of modern cultural identity, and the cultural and linguistic dimensions of domestic life and in society at large. Closely related, a third series of papers focuses on writers and texts analysed from the vantage points of exile and exophony, as well as theoretical contributions to issues of terminology and what it means to talk about transcultural phenomena. Finally, a group of papers sheds light on more overtly violent power structures, mechanisms of exclusion, Totalitarianism, torture, and censorship, but also resistance to these forms of oppression. In addition to these chapters, the volume also collects a number of thematically related group sections from the ICLA congress, preserving their original context.

Book Teacher Education in the 21st Century

Download or read book Teacher Education in the 21st Century written by Antje-Marianne Kolde and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2016-08-17 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can teacher education prepare future teachers for their work in increasingly diverse classrooms? How does the concept of plurilingualism inform language educational policy in different countries? What are the current opportunities and challenges in the domain of internationalisation in teacher education? The contributions to this volume address these questions from different theoretical perspectives, and with a strong emphasis on the actual practices in various classrooms. At a time when simplistic, essentialist, biased, and discriminatory ideologies and practices see a rebirth in public discourse, and represent a risk to education, the contributors here take stock and describe some worthwhile alternatives. The first set of chapters addresses the integration of ethnic, religious, and gender diversity in teacher education colleges. In the second part, the notion of plurilingualism in different educational contexts is explored from a critical sociolinguistic point of view. The chapters in the third part present evidence from innovative international academic exchange programs and how they contribute to socio-spatial learning amongst others. The common denominator in this volume is the notion of convergence – the coexistence of people and practices in diverse contexts.

Book The Word in Arabic

Download or read book The Word in Arabic written by Giuliano Lancioni and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2011-10-14 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first monograph-length volume entirely devoted to the theoretical and empirical issues raised by the definition of ‘word’ and related concepts in Arabic, both at the historical and synchronic level. Some of the best-known scholars in the field of Arabic linguistics debate such issues as the technical definition of words and morphemes in the Arabic grammatical and rhetorical traditions, the theoretical status of the root and its interactions with morphology, the analysis of word in the computer treatment of Arabic texts, some relevant phenomena in the contact of Arabic with other languages. The result is a fresh portrait of some of the most interesting research currently under way in Arabic linguistics from different theoretical and methodological viewpoints.

Book Challenges in synchronic toponymy D fis de la toponymie synchronique

Download or read book Challenges in synchronic toponymy D fis de la toponymie synchronique written by Jonas Löfström and published by Narr Francke Attempto Verlag. This book was released on 2015-09-16 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to globalization, synchronic approaches in toponymy arise increasing interest among linguists. This volume takes stock of different approaches to synchronic toponymy presenting linguistic studies on toponyms - in as various fields as grammar, morphosyntax, semantics, and pragmatics - which describe their structure and lexical status, their semantic facets, applied to the psychological, sociological and political implications of their use and function in discourse. All these factors account for the great variety of linguistic projects related to toponyms, i.e. modelling, as well as the use and normalization of toponyms in spoken and written contexts.
