Book excerpt: Arab painting, preserved mainly in manuscript illustrations of the 12th to 14th centuries, is here treated as an artistic corpus fully deserving of appreciation in its own terms, and not as a mere precursor to Persian painting. The book assembles papers by a distinguished list of scholars that illuminate the variety of material that survives in scientific as well as literary manuscripts. Because of the contexts in which the paintings appear, a major theoretical concern is, precisely, the relationship of painting to text. It rejects earlier scholarly habits of analysing paintings in isolation, and proposes the integration of text and image as a more satisfactory framework within which to elucidate the characteristics and functions of this impressive body of work.

Book A Masterpiece Of Arab Painting

Download or read book A Masterpiece Of Arab Painting written by David James and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Maq'm't of al-Har'r? (d.516/122) is one of the best-known works of Arabic literature. Why and how did this impenetrable work of Mediaeval Arabic philology and linguistic acrobatics dressed up as a collection of picaresque tales, become the vehicle for such extraordinarily lively, life-like and technically competent paintings. This study of the Schefer Maq'm't manuscript looks at the work of the scribe-illustrator, Yahy? ibn Mahm'd al-W'sit? in detail. The author also suggests how the text is related to the illustrations and how it developed and altered over the centuries.

Book Taking Shape

Download or read book Taking Shape written by Suheyla Takesh and published by Hirmer Verlag GmbH. This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Taking Shape: Abstraction from the Arab World, 1950s-1980s explores the development of abstraction in the Arab world via paintings, sculpture, and works on paper dating from the 1950s through the 1980s. By looking critically at the history and historiography of mid-20th century abstraction, the exhibition considers art from North Africa and West Asia as integral to the discourse on global modernism. At its heart, the project raises a fundamental art historical question: How do we study abstraction across different contexts and what models of analysis do we use? Examining how and why artists investigated the expressive capacities of line, color, and texture, Taking Shape highlights a number of abstract movements that developed in the Middle East, North Africa, and West Asia, as well as the Arab diaspora."--Artsy website (accessed 18/2/20).
