Book excerpt: The Arab countries are increasingly recognising their importance as a regional economic grouping. Given the highly skewed distribution of natural, human and financial resources, the course of economic development in the Arab countries seems to be interrelated. Through pooling their resources and markets these countries will not only be able to optimise investment decisions but also broaden the potential for development. This book argues that economic integration is not merely a question of reducing or eliminating discriminatory measures, as emphasised in previous integration attempts. It calls rather for a positive action based on a regional investment strategy which coordinates production programmes, to reap the benefits of specialisation and scale. The book focuses on past industrialisation efforts in the Arab countries and examines the emerging patterns of industrial growth. A pioneering attempt is made to identify specific industries whose economic viability can be enhanced by conceiving them on a regional basis. The book concludes by framing a strategy for an integrated industrial development in the Arab region. First published in 1982.

Book Arab Economic Integration

Download or read book Arab Economic Integration written by Ahmed Galal and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2003-05-15 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Brookings Institution Press and the Egyptian Center for Economic Studies (ECES) publication Improving the economic performance of Arab countries is now more critical than ever. The region faces high population growth rates, rising unemployment, and modest economic growth coupled with increasingly intense competition from emerging markets in eastern Europe, Latin America, and Asia. Meeting these challenges requires finding ways to overcome political obstacles that impede socially beneficial economic reforms. Despite fifty years of repeated attempts at Arab economic integration, the results in terms of intraregional trade and investment flows have been very modest. This book explains why and discusses possible ways forward. The authors draw especially on the success of the European Union to assess the scope of Arab economic integration as an instrument for narrowing the persistent gap between the region¡¯s economic potential and its performance.

Book excerpt: In this book, scholars, journalists, and officials of Arab, pan-Arab, and non-Arab institutions afford insights into the problems of Arab economic development and integration. The contributors, who met on the occasion of the 11th Arab Summit (also known as the First Arab Economic Summit), demonstrate that Arab economic integration is the best means by which individual Arab countries can achieve economic development. Their study of the integration process, the obstacles encountered, and the results achieved, in addition to being of interest to anyone concerned with the Arab world, is of particular relevance to those studying economic development in the Third World and South-South or North-South relations.

This book was released on 2010-01 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last century the world economy has encountered deep and rapid changes. Over the years these changes have internationally regionally and locally been transforming our global economic and social systems. These changes are in political and economic spheres. Since the last few years of the previous century a new phenomenon in international economic relations has been on the rise which aims to increase free international trade and eliminate trade barriers and restrictions between countries. In addition, joint efforts are afoot to increase the economic cooperation among nations in all possible ways. Towards this end, since World War II several international organizations have been established, such as the International Monetary Fund, Arab Monetary Fund, Arab League and the Arab Organization of Investment Guarantee. These organizations are involved, directly or indirectly, to promote and grow international trade by a gradual decrease of trade barriers. They have achieved significant improvements in the field of international trade, investment and economic growth.

Book Oil Industrialization Development in the Arab Gulf States RLE Economy of Middle East

Download or read book Oil Industrialization Development in the Arab Gulf States RLE Economy of Middle East written by Atif Kubursi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-05-15 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Were oil supplies everlasting and the demand for oil strong and continuous, economic diversification in the Gulf would be pointless. However oil reserves are finite and non-renewable and the world demand for oil from the Gulf region is simply not stable. Collectively the countries of the Gulf face the striking prospect that unless priorities and plans are set with care the gestation period of their economic development may be longer than the expected life of their hydrocarbon resources. This book examines just that threat. It considers the opportunities available to the Gulf states for accumulating sufficient productive capital in the non-oil sectors of their economy to offset the drawing down of oil reserves. The book pays particular attention to the possibilities of development through cooperation not only within the Gulf Cooperation Council but also within the larger Arab region and the Third World as a whole. It concludes with a critical review of the main challenges that these economies are facing and are likely to face in the near future with special emphasis on their major problems and failures. First published in 1984.

Book Economic and Trade Policies in the Arab World

Download or read book Economic and Trade Policies in the Arab World written by Mahmoud A.T. Elkhafif and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-05-04 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Arab Spring and recent popular uprisings that have taken place in many Arab countries since the end of 2010 highlight the urgent need for economic policy reorientation in these countries. This book addresses key issues relevant to the contemporary economic realities of the Arab economies; including policy space, generation of more productive and decent employment, social justice and poverty alleviation, regional integration and the common destiny of the Arab people, and the failure of the structural adjustment programs recommended by the Bretton Woods institutions and implemented in these countries in the last three decades. The volume explores, and makes recommendations, for deep pan Arab regional integration and alternative pro-poor, growth-oriented economic and trade policies capable of promoting social justice by reducing the incidence of poverty. It highlights the ways in which various types of economic and trade policies have affected the levels of employment and poverty in five Arab countries: Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, the occupied Palestinian territory and Sudan. Using a mixture of qualitative and quantitative methodologies, the book focuses on Arab trade integration, exploring the obstacles to its implementation in the past, as well as its potentials as a source of employment generation and enhancement of living conditions. The book also addresses the construction, interpretation and use of quantitative trade indicators for optimal policy choice at both the domestic and regional levels.
