Book The Complete Book of Swimming

Download or read book The Complete Book of Swimming written by Phillip Whitten and published by Random House. This book was released on 2012-03-07 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The all-purpose guide to swimming, for beginners and experts alike, that will help make you fitter, faster, more efficient, and more knowledgeable about this wonderful sport. The Complete Book of Swimming is written for those folks who want to become physically fit and stay physically for the rest of their lives; for folks who are seeking to enhance their lives. There are chapters on the different strokes that provide the “how-to” information people need to get started. Equally important are the chapters that answer such questions as Why should I swim? Why swimming and not some other sport? How can swimming improve my health? How can it enhance my life? How will I become a better person—more vital, more competent, vigorous, sexy . . . alive by swimming? Praise for The Complete Book of Swimming “Phil Witten not only explains the ‘how to’ of swimming in clear, easy-to-understand language, but he also explains the ‘why’ of swimming: why swimming can make you healthier, happier, and sexier, and can make you feel younger. If The Complete Book of Swimming doesn’t convince you that swimming is the best thing you could possibly do for your health, then nothing will.”—Mark Spitz “Finally a book has been written that will put swimming on the map for the general public. Phil Witten combines a storyteller’s gift for creating excitement with scientific knowledge and personal experience. The Complete Book of Swimming is a must read for swimmers (and coaches) at every level, and for anyone interested in lifelong fitness and health.”—Skip Kennedy, Olympic coaching staff, men’s swimming; men’s swimming coach, Stanford University (NCAA champions) “Dr. Whitten has written the perfect all-purpose guide. It’s a useful tool for both experienced swimmers who want to improve, and for rookies who aren’t sure where to begin. The Complete Book of Swimming is an invaluable source for all aging baby boomers.”—Karen Allen, USA Today “Passion arouses passion, and Dr. Whitten surely cannot fail to persuade aspiring swimmers of all ages and abilities that the sport of swimming is the way to a healthier, happier existence. This is a splendid invitation to beginners, while offering a clearer insight to those who have already donned their suits and goggles. The writing is instructive and entertaining, and the illustrations depict the very latest techniques used in the pool.”—Craig Lord, The Times (London)

Book The Fish Vet Dialogue Improving communication and collaboration in aquatic organism health management

Download or read book The Fish Vet Dialogue Improving communication and collaboration in aquatic organism health management written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org. [Author]. This book was released on 2024-04-02 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this Circular article is to inform national policymakers and other stakeholders of issues related to aquatic organism health and aquaculture biosecurity throughout the aquaculture supply and value chains, and to promote more effective collaboration between stakeholders to minimize risks of disease introduction, transmission, spread and associated production losses. [Author] A survey was undertaken to determine country organizational arrangements for managing the health of aquatic organisms and aquaculture biosecurity, including with respect to the direct and indirect impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. [Author] A platform was then developed to inform respective mandates, share experiences and identify areas for collaboration with these matters as a basis for generating recommendations for further development of aquatic organism health and biosecurity systems. [Author] This led to the Fish-Vet Dialogue: Exploring Collaboration on Managing Health of Aquatic Organisms, an event organized by FAO and the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH), with the support of the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD) and the Norwegian Veterinary Institute (NVI). [Author] Key aspects from the survey and the Fish-Vet Dialogue included: enhancing collaboration by engaging stakeholders and establishing public–private partnerships (PPPs); addressing the wider scope of collaboration, especially the One Health Initiative; scientific collaboration; and transparency in support of biosecurity and trade. [Author] Collaboration across government agencies is the minimum requirement, and policies or regulations are unlikely to succeed unless developed together with stakeholders, through PPPs. [Author] Trust and transparency are also required at all levels of management to support biosecurity and trade. [Author] Furthermore, the One Health approach should be taken to promote regional and international cooperation to improve biosecurity along the aquaculture supply and value chain and reduce the risks of disease outbreaks. [Author] Future actions to be taken include continuing the Fish-Vet Dialogue as a regular event to raise awareness, share experiences and generate collaborative actions to support a sustainable global aquaculture industry. Download or read book Aquatic Genomics written by N. Shimizu and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a scientific pursuit there is continual food for discovery and wonder. M. Shelley (1818) Genomic analysis of aquatic species has long been overshadowed by the superb activity of the human genome project. However, aquatic genomics is now in the limelight as evidenced by the recent accomplishment of fugu genome sequencing, which provided a significant foundation for comparative fish genomics. Undoubt edly, such progress will provide an exciting and unparalleled boost to our knowl edge of the genetics of aquatic species. Thus, aquatic genomics research has become a promising new research field with an impact on the fishery industry. It is notewor thy that the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations has projected that current global fisheries production will soon become insufficient to supply the increasing world population and that aquaculture has a great potential to fulfill that demand. This book, Aquatic Genomic. ~: Steps Toward a Great Future, was designed as a collection of advanced knowledge in aquatic genomics and biological sciences. It covers a variety of aquatic organisms including fish, crustaceans, and shellfish, and describes various advanced methodologies, including genome analysis, gene map ping, DNA markers, and EST analysis. Also included are discussions of many sub jects such as regulation of gene expression, stress and immune responses, sex differ entiation, hormonal control, and transgenic fishes.

Book excerpt: HeatStroke: Why Canada's Summer Olympic Program Is Failing--And How We Can Fix It, is Michael Simonson's incisive and passionate diagnosis of Canada's Summer Olympic performances and the disparate nature of amateur sport in Canada. He reveals why a country that seemingly dominates at the Winter Olympics is content in putting up with sporting ineptitude at the Summer Olympics. In doing so, he discovers that Canada's success at the Winter Olympics has more to do with the vision of Canada's winter sport organizations than with the health of the sport system itself. But Simonson's exposé is written out of love of his country and sport, and in the hopes of turning Canadian sport around so all of our athletes have the opportunity to be successful. While his book is a tough diagnosis of our sporting ills, it also examines Canada's plan for resurgence at the Summer Olympics, while offering its own blueprint for success, not just in the short-term but for many Olympiads to come. Examining some of the best practices implemented in Canada's winter sport system HeatStroke provides a made in Canada solution to our summer sporting ills.
