Fauna Austr. 2:606 Resembles C. p e d e 11 u s, but the extreme tips of the tibiae are black, the fore femora are entirely black with the exception of the base; and the tips of the knobs of the halteres are black. Length 5.5 to 6 mm. Schiner loc. cit. Green, shining, thorax and tip of abdomen, black; dorsum of thorax of the male with three wide confluent black stripes; antennae of the male pale brown; wings white; tip of the knob of the halteres blackish; legs pale, the extreme tips of the tibiae, the whole of the fore femora except the yellowish bases are black; the anterior tarsi of the male nearly bare, fore metatarsus about one fourth longer than its tibiae; the male claspers short and slender. The first five abdominal segments in the dried specimens are pale yellow. Everything else as with C. p e d e 11 u s Zetterstedt. New Jersey (Johnson). 32. Chironomus nigricans n. sp. (P1.21, figs. 5 to 12, and pl.28, fig.15) Larva. The larvae were collected from the ponds in the vicinity of Cayuga lake, Ithaca, N. Y. They are blood-red, slender, about 12 mm. long, head short, pale brown, edge of the labium and tip of the mandibles black, each eye consisting of a pair of distinctly separated spots, one of these spots being again divided by a fine line. The antennae is slender, about three fourths as long as the mandible, its first joint five sevenths as long as the others taken together (fig.5). The labrum is of the usual form, with about five pairs of curved subapical setae, and a pair of flattened, ventrad-projecting fan-like processes. Keys are provided for the identification of both sexes, though the prime reliance is upon the characters of the male. The classification used is essentially (with some modification) that of Fittkau (1962). A total of 130 species & 38 genera or subgenera are treated in this paper. Of these, 48 species & 11 genera or subgenera are new. Of the 17 genera of Pentaneurini treated by Fittkau (1962), only ¿Telmatopelopia¿ was not found in North America. All the genera listed by Fittkau for the Macropelopiini were found here. ¿Anatopynia¿ s. str. wasn¿t found.
