Book excerpt: This paper discusses results of three laboratory studies where invertebrate animals were exposed to contaminated sediments for periods of 30 to 136 days. Sediments and animals were analyzed for metals and PCB, but not for pesticides or petroleum hydrocarbons. Lead was the only metal which showed a slight potential for transfer from sediment to organism. The data did indicate, however, that PCB in sediment is available. Bioaccumulation of PCB was affected by level of sediment contamination, characteristics of the sediment such as particle size and organic content, and life-style of the organism. Data on sediment and a clam species from a containment area near Port Arthur, Texas, are also presented. The analyses indicated only low levels of contaminants with levels in Rangia generally lower than sediment levels. These data are discussed in relation to use of containment areas of producing edible fish and shellfish or bait species. Excess animals could be used to supplement existing fish or shellfish in nearby lakes or estuaries.

Book excerpt: The Nordic Council of Ministers have recognized the need to compile the knowledge of sediment remediation strategies and to evaluate different remediation approaches. The objective of this report is to give a status of regulatory framework and sediment management within selected Nordic countries (Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark). In addition, the report gives a short overview of international knowledge on remediation approaches, techniques, and materials. Governance and regulatory instruments in dealing with contaminated sediments vary between countries. Of the countries presented, only Norwegian environmental authorities have implemented a national strategy for remediation of marine contaminated sediments. A Nordic database of clean-up projects and long-term monitoring would improve the exchange of knowledge between the Nordic countries.

Acquisition, however, is increasingly difficult because of high real estate values, the long-term nature of the easements, and the perception by landowners that dredged material is not aesthetic. The U.S. Corps of Engineers has worked to identify ways in which the landowner can use the acreage for activities that are financially attractive but do not interfere with periodic disposal of dredged material. One of these activities is aquaculture. This report summarizes information on legal and institutional constraints on aquaculture in DMCA. Laws, regulations, and permit requirements that may apply to DMCA aquaculture are outlined; potential legal difficulties are identified and methods of avoiding them are suggested"--National Sea Grant Library publication website

The successful conduct and documentation of field demonstration projects were viewed as essential activities to respond to concerns about unreasonable risks caused by incompatibility of DMCA physical, chemical, and operation conditions with aquaculture.
