Book Civil Society in Asia

Download or read book Civil Society in Asia written by Wayne Hudson and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-11-01 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In East and Southeast Asia, the creation of civil society is a crucial yet most difficult issue. Europeans have had the luxury of centuries in a slow-moving world characterised by weak governments in which the foundation institutions, norms and values of civil society could ferment and develop. Asia, however, faces this task when a nation's currency can devalue in seconds, destabilising its government, and when states have far more effective means of surveillance, suppression and terror. This book examines these issues and shows that a better understanding of civil society in the Asian context is central to promoting contemporary political, social and economic reform in Asia. It will appeal to students and teachers of politics, law and sociology because it provides new perspectives on how to understand civil society drawing on Asian examples, as well as indications for rethinking what civil society means in Asia. Individual chapters combine theoretical and empirical issues in a way which fills a major gap in the literature. Henceforth, works about 'civil society' will need to take more account of the Asian evidence and Asianists will need to have a clear idea of what civil society in Asia means.

Book Mental Nurses Training Manual

Download or read book Mental Nurses Training Manual written by David 'Khyber' Close and published by BookPOD. This book was released on 2023-05-03 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Back at the end of the 1970s, three hundred copies of Neglect & Violence – Mental Nurse’s Training Manual were released by Wombat Printing NL to friends and the nurse’s underground. Forty plus years later it is now released to the public with little danger of litigation regarding libel or defamation. The back-cover blurb for MENTAL NURSES TRAINING MANUAL then had it that: ‘An ex-psychiatric nurse recalls his experiences after reporting a bashing and drinking on duty to his superiors. He exposes a cover-up by the hospital authorities and the State government bureaucracy then known as the Mental Health Authority. His report details murder and suicide cases and hints at widespread cruelty and indifference. His memories and impressions of the people he met working at a Melbourne mental hospital adds colour to a subject which bears thinking about. The author’s futile exploits as a candidate in the 1973 Victorian state election makes amusing and / or alarming reading, while his analysis of shortcomings in psychiatric practice might stimulate a new deal for the bewildered victims of our dog-eat-dog civilization…” “A must for all the up and coming maniacs.” – Gough Whitelamb in the Daylesford Gazette. “Lifts the lid off the sanity business.” – Clyde Pucker in the Yea Times. “Reading this book didn’t relieve my obsessive-compulsive-neurosis or my ethical dilemmas, but it gave me the pleasant feeling that I am not alone in this world with my belief in the prefectability of mankind through the exercise of hope fertilized by integrity.” – Malcolm Howard in the West Wyalong Whinger. “Whistle-blowing anti-psychiatry still resonates today.” Phil Saddams in the Rupert Warduck Stable

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This is the most important and impressive collection of original research available on California's blanket primary. Its discussion of open primaries and crossover voting raises provocative issues which loom large. The findings are impressive."—Max Neiman, author of Defending Government: Why Big Government Works "Cain and Gerber have assembled a stellar cast of scholars to consider the impact of the blanket primary and important electoral change in California's politics. This is a very important book for anybody who wants to understand how institutions shape political incentives."—Bernard Grofman, author of Minority Representation and the Quest for Voting Equality "When Californians passed Proposition 198, they also provided a national stage on which the nature of state elections in general was placed in the spotlight. Cain and Gerber's Voting at the Political Fault Line is an intelligent compilation of work and assessments of the rumblings that followed and the longer-term consequences that are likely to be debated over the nature of primary elections. Its no-nonsense style and reliance on sophisticated empirical analysis highlight some counterintuitive results and illustrate highly creative applications of social science methods."—Max Neiman, author of Defending Government: Why Big Government Works

Book Samuel Ringgold Ward

Download or read book Samuel Ringgold Ward written by R. J. M. Blackett and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2023-03-28 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rediscovery of a pivotal figure in Black history and his importance and influence in the struggle against slavery and discrimination Born on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, Samuel Ringgold Ward (1817–c. 1869) escaped enslavement and would become a leading figure in the struggle for Black freedom, citizenship, and equality. He was extolled by his contemporary Frederick Douglass for his “depth of thought, fluency of speech, readiness of wit, logical exactness.” Until now, his story has been largely untold. Ward, a newspaper editor, Congregational minister, and advocate for the temperance movement, was considered one of the leading orators of his time. After the passage of the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 he fled to Canada, where he lectured widely to improve conditions for formerly enslaved people who had settled there. Ward then went to Britain as an agent of the Canadian Antislavery Society and published his influential book Autobiography of a Fugitive Negro. He never returned to the United States, and he died in obscurity in Jamaica. Despite Ward’s prominent role in the abolitionist movement, his story has been lost because of the decades he spent in exile. In this book, R. J. M. Blackett brings light to Ward’s life and his important role in the struggle against slavery and discrimination, and to the personal price he paid for confronting oppression.

Book Pauli Murray

Download or read book Pauli Murray written by Troy R. Saxby and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2020-03-09 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Rev. Dr. Anna Pauline "Pauli" Murray (1910–1985) was a trailblazing social activist, writer, lawyer, civil rights organizer, and campaigner for gender rights. In the 1930s and 1940s, she was active in radical left-wing political groups and helped innovate nonviolent protest strategies against segregation that would become iconic in later decades, and in the 1960s, she cofounded the National Organization for Women (NOW). In addition, Murray became the first African American to receive a Yale law doctorate and the first black woman to be ordained an Episcopal priest. Yet, behind her great public successes, Murray battled many personal demons, including bouts of poor physical and mental health, conflicts over her gender and sexual identities, family traumas, and financial difficulties. In this intimate biography, Troy Saxby provides the most comprehensive account of Murray's inner life to date, revealing her struggles in poignant detail and deepening our understanding and admiration of her numerous achievements in the face of pronounced racism, homophobia, transphobia, and political persecution. Saxby interweaves the personal and the political, showing how the two are always entwined, to tell the life story of one of twentieth-century America's most fascinating and inspirational figures.
