Book One Friday in April A Story of Suicide and Survival

Download or read book One Friday in April A Story of Suicide and Survival written by Donald Antrim and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2021-10-12 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of TIME's 100 Must-Read Books of 2021 One of BuzzFeed's Best Books of 2021 One of Vulture's Best Books of 2021 Named one of the Most Anticipated of Books of 2021 by the Los Angeles Times, Literary Hub, and The Millions A searing and brave memoir that offers a new understanding of suicide as a distinct mental illness. As the sun lowered in the sky one Friday afternoon in April 2006, acclaimed author Donald Antrim found himself on the roof of his Brooklyn apartment building, afraid for his life. In this moving memoir, Antrim vividly recounts what led him to the roof and what happened after he came back down: two hospitalizations, weeks of fruitless clinical trials, the terror of submitting to ECT—and the saving call from David Foster Wallace that convinced him to try it—as well as years of fitful recovery and setback. Through a clear and haunting reckoning with the author’s own story, One Friday in April confronts the limits of our understanding of suicide. Donald Antrim’s personal insights reframe suicide—whether in thought or in action—as an illness in its own right, a unique consequence of trauma and personal isolation, rather than the choice of a depressed person. A necessary companion to William Styron’s classic? Darkness Visible, this profound, insightful work sheds light on the tragedy and mystery of suicide, offering solace that may save lives.

Book Thiet Gap The Battle Of An Loc April 1972 Illustrated Edition

Download or read book Thiet Gap The Battle Of An Loc April 1972 Illustrated Edition written by Lt-Colonel James H. Willbanks and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2014-08-15 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: [Illustrated with 1 table, 7 maps, 1 figure and 13 Illustrations] The Battle of An Loc was one of the most important battles of the Vietnam War. It took place during the 1972 North Vietnamese Spring Offensive, after most U.S. combat troops had departed South Vietnam. The battle, which lasted over two months, resulted in the virtual destruction of three North Vietnamese divisions and blocked a Communist attack on Saigon. The sustained intensity of combat during this battle had not been previously seen in the Vietnam War. Although this battle occurred after the high point of American involvement in Vietnam, when U.S. forces were in the process of withdrawing from that country, Americans played a key role in the action. South Vietnamese ground forces and their U.S. Army advisers, working in close cooperation with U.S. Army and Air Force air support, proved a combination capable of resisting defeat and seizing victory. Because the Battle of An Loc did not involve large numbers of American troops, little has been written about the battle or American participation in it. Jim Willbanks’ study focuses on the conduct of the battle and the role American combat advisers and U.S. air power played in defeating the North Vietnamese forces during the spring of 1972.

Introduction The headwaters of the Bitterroot River originate from two-major Head Waters. The East Fork of the Bitterroot River originates from the Sapphire Mountains and Anaconda Pintler Wilderness Areas. The West Fork of the Bitterroot River originates from the Bitterroot Mountains and the Selway – Bitterroot Wilderness Areas. The West Fork of the Bitterroot River was dammed in the early 1900’s creating Painted Rocks Reservoir. Below Painted Rocks Reservoir lies the tail-water fishery section of the West Fork of the Bitterroot River, which flows downstream to its confluence with the East Fork of the Bitterroot River north of the town of Conner, Montana. The East Fork of the Bitterroot River is still a free flowing stream. The Wild Fires of “2000” burned much of the timberland in the headwaters of both drainages. During spring run-off and summer thunderstorms the East Fork of the Bitterroot River turns turbid from the ash that is washed into the river from the tributaries flowing into the river. The West Fork of the Bitterroot River however remains clear, Painted Rocks Reservoir allows the headwater run-off to settle out within the reservoir before entering the West Fork of the Bitterroot River below the dam. The East Fork of the Bitterroot River confluence with the West Fork of the Bitterroot River forms the mainsteam of the Bitterroot River, which flows northerly to its confluence with the Clarkfork River outside the city of Missoula, Montana. The Bitterroot River trout fishery has experienced depravation from mankind since the early 1900’s when Marcus Daly “The Copper King” and others commissioned the building of an extensive network of irrigation canals throughout the Bitterroot Valley. The largest canal is the Big Ditch, which runs northerly over seventy-five miles in length traversing the eastside of the Bitterroot River Valley. They built large diversion dams across the Bitterroot River and diverted most of the tributaries in the Bitterroot Valley. These diversion dams dewater the Bitterroot River severely during the summer months. Most of the Bitterroot Tributaries become dry during critical spawning periods for Rainbow Trout, Westslope Cutthroat Trout, Brown Trout and Bull Trout. With these depravation problems on the Bitterroot River there are still some sections of the Bitterroot River that offer good fishing for Rainbow Trout, Brown Trout and Westslope Cutthroat Trout and to a lesser degree Bull Trout. The Bitterroot River at time offers some excellent dry fly fishing. In March and April there are Stone Flies: Skwala Stone Flies (Skwala parallela) and Winter Stone Flies (Capina sp.), May Flies: Midges (Diptera / Chironomous), Early Blue-Winged Olive (Baetis tricaudatus), Dark Gray Quill (Ameletus connectus) and Caddies Flies: Grannom (Brachycentrus occidentalis) and Green Sedge (Ryacophila sp.).
