Book Apricot Growing in California Classic Reprint

Download or read book Apricot Growing in California Classic Reprint written by Arthur Howard Hendrickson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-19 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Apricot Growing in California The principal rootstocks used for apricots are apricot, peach, and myrobalan. The apricot and peach are more generally used than the myrobalan. The apricot cannot be relied upon to make a strong union with the myrobalan, for, although the trees often grow well for a number of years, they are apt to break at the graft union under stress of heavy loads or strong winds. The apricot root is resistant to the attacks of nematodes and the Pacific peach tree borers, and for this reason is valuable in districts where these pests are known to exist. All three principal rootstocks used for apricots are more or less susceptible to crown gall. The myrobalan is thought by some growers to be more resistant to oak fungus than either the apricot or peach, and is therefore used to some extent as a rootstock for the apricot. A questionnaire submitted to the nurserymen of California by the Division of Pomology showed that the percentage of apricot trees propagated on apricot stock in the years 1923 to 1928 inclusive varied from 30 per cent to 56 per cent. The percentage on peach stock varied to approximately the same extent. The percentage of apricots on apricot stock was greater than on peach stock four years out of the six for which records were obtained. The proportion of apricots on myrobalan decreased from per cent in 1923 to about 12 per cent in 1928. A few apricots. On Davidiana stock were also propagated during this period. In 1929 approximately 46 per cent of the apricot trees propagated were on apricot root, 16 per cent on myrobalan, and 38 per cent on peach. The almond is not used as a. Rootstock for apricots. Book Apple Growing in California Classic Reprint

Download or read book Apple Growing in California Classic Reprint written by Frank Wisdom Allen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-02-05 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Apple Growing in California With the large crop of 1926 in practically all sections, prices received for California apples were extremely low. However, the eight-year averages of total value, when compared with comparable figures of other deciduous fruits during the same period, show the value of California's apple crop to have been approximately three times that of either cherries or shipping plums, three times the almond crop, about one million and a half dollars in excess of the pear crop, and almost as great as that of apricot crop. In 1920 and 1921 rather extensive new plantings were made in Sonoma, Butte, San Bernardino, Kern, and Inyo counties. During the past five years new plantings have not been so extensive except in Sonoma and Tuolumne counties. The total number of non-bearing trees for the state now shows a slight decline, while the bearing acreage shows a gradual and consistent increase. With the exception of 1923, a heavy crop year, production has been relatively uniform. Yields on the Whole are dependable, not being so seriously affected by frosts and drought as are the orchards of the eastern states. Book Pear Growing in California Classic Reprint

Download or read book Pear Growing in California Classic Reprint written by Luther Dent Davis and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pear Growing in California Seeds of commercial pears were planted in the early days of mining in the Sierra foothills of the Sacramento and San Joaquin valleys, and a few oriental pears were set out by the Chinese immigrants. Later, graft ing wood and grafted trees of many varieties, brought from the missions, from eastern states, and even from Europe, were grown to supply fruit to miners and other new settlers. With the discovery of gold, certain enterprising young men who had come in search of the precious ore found that more money could be made by supplying fruit for the satisfaction of the prodigal miners, than by panning gold; and pear growing gained impetus. According to Wickson, the Bartlett was brought around the Horn in 1850 and planted in the Napa Valley. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The seed infuses the core with a hint of almond; the fruit carries the scent of citrus and jasmine; and it tastes, some say, like manna from heaven. In these pages, Robin Chapman recalls the season when the Santa Clara Valley was the largest apricot producer in the world and recounts the stories of Silicon Valley's now lost orchards. From the Spaniards in the eighteenth century who first planted apricots in the Mission Santa Clara gardens to the post-World War II families who built their homes among subdivided orchards, relive the long summer days ripe with bumper crops of this much-anticipated delicacy.

Book Fig Culture in California Classic Reprint

Download or read book Fig Culture in California Classic Reprint written by Ira J. Condit and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fig Culture in California Commercial fig orchards appear to have been established in the coast counties, and even in the Sacramento Valley and the Sierra Foothills, earlier than in the San J oaquin Valley. In 1876 there were trees in Yolo County, in Tuolumne, and only 685 in Fresno County. An orchard of 27 acres of White Adriatic fig trees was planted at Fresno about 1885, the first carload of dried white figs being sent east in 1889. The White Adriatic was the most widely planted variety during the two decades following 1885 but the dried product lacked the tender ness of skin and the flavor of the imported fig from Smyrna. The Year book of the United States Department of Agriculture for 1897 stated that the White Adriatic has many points of merit, but the fact that its quality when dried is inferior to that of the imported dried fruit from Smyrna has resulted in several efforts to introduce and grow the Smyrna type of fig.
