Book excerpt: We study in Part I of this monograph the computational aspect of almost all moduli of continuity over wide classes of functions exploiting some of their convexity properties. To our knowledge it is the first time the entire calculus of moduli of smoothness has been included in a book. We then present numerous applications of Approximation Theory, giving exact val ues of errors in explicit forms. The K-functional method is systematically avoided since it produces nonexplicit constants. All other related books so far have allocated very little space to the computational aspect of moduli of smoothness. In Part II, we study/examine the Global Smoothness Preservation Prop erty (GSPP) for almost all known linear approximation operators of ap proximation theory including: trigonometric operators and algebraic in terpolation operators of Lagrange, Hermite-Fejer and Shepard type, also operators of stochastic type, convolution type, wavelet type integral opera tors and singular integral operators, etc. We present also a sufficient general theory for GSPP to hold true. We provide a great variety of applications of GSPP to Approximation Theory and many other fields of mathemat ics such as Functional analysis, and outside of mathematics, fields such as computer-aided geometric design (CAGD). Most of the time GSPP meth ods are optimal. Various moduli of smoothness are intensively involved in Part II. Therefore, methods from Part I can be used to calculate exactly the error of global smoothness preservation. It is the first time in the literature that a book has studied GSPP.

Book excerpt: Although Padé presented his fundamental paper at the end of the last century, the studies on Padé's approximants only became significant in the second part of this century. Padé procedure is related to the theory of continued fractions, and some convergence theorems can be expressed only in terms of continued fractions. Further, Padé approximants have some advantages of practical applicability with respect to the continued-fraction theory. Moreover, as Chisholm notes, a given power series determines a set of approximants which are usually unique, whereas there are many ways of writing an associated continued fraction. The principal advantage of Padé approximants with respect to the generating Taylor series is that they provide an extension beyond the interval of convergence of the series. Padé approximants can be applied in many parts of fluid-dynamics, both in steady and in nonsteady flows, both in incompressible and in compressible regimes. This book is divided into four parts. The first one deals with the properties of the Padé approximants that are useful for the applications and illustrates, with the aid of diagrams and tables, the effectiveness of this technique in the field of applied mathematics. The second part recalls the basic equations of fluid-dynamics (those associated with the names of Navier-Stokes, Euler and Prandtl) and gives a quick derivation of them from the general balance equation. The third shows eight examples of the application of Padé approximants to steady flows, also taking into account the influence of the coupling of heat conduction in the body along which a fluid flows with conduction and convection in the fluid itself. The fourth part considers two examples of the application of Padé approximants to unsteady flows. The principal aim of the Advanced Study Institute, as reflected in these Proceedings, was to bring together recent and up-to-date developments of the subject, and to give directions for future research. Amongst the main topics covered during this Advanced Study Institute is the subject of uni variate and multivariate wavelet decomposition over spline spaces. This is a relatively new area in approximation theory and an increasingly impor tant subject. The work involves key techniques in approximation theory cardinal splines, B-splines, Euler-Frobenius polynomials, spline spaces with non-uniform knot sequences. A number of scientific applications are also highlighted, most notably applications to signal processing and digital im age processing. Developments in the area of approximation of functions examined in the course of our discussions include approximation of periodic phenomena over irregular node distributions, scattered data interpolation, Pade approximants in one and several variables, approximation properties of weighted Chebyshev polynomials, minimax approximations, and the Strang Fix conditions and their relation to radial functions.
