Book Approximate Methods for Analysis of Dynamic Crack Growth and Arrest

Download or read book Approximate Methods for Analysis of Dynamic Crack Growth and Arrest written by F. Nilsson and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Approximate methods that are less time-consuming than finite-element method (FEM) analysis are needed for dynamic crack propagation and arrest calculations. In this context the one-dimensional wave propagation models, where the cracked section is modeled by a flexibility matrix, may be a reasonable alternative. Such models are compared with fully dynamic two-dimensional FEM calculations of experimentally observed crack growth histories in an edge-cracked rectangular sheet. A fairly good agreement is obtained; the discrepancies could mainly be ascribed to differences in the end conditions. The author concludes that spring models are worth further examination in order to make them a practical tool for engineering design analysis.

Book Preliminary Approaches to Experimental and Numerical Study on Fast Crack Propagation and Crack Arrest

Download or read book Preliminary Approaches to Experimental and Numerical Study on Fast Crack Propagation and Crack Arrest written by T. Kanazawa and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within the limit of relatively short arrested crack, static approximation by applying linear fracture mechanics has yielded useful results for theoretical interpretation and practical application of currently used brittle fracture propagation arrest test (the concept of arrest toughness). But later experimental investigations using very wide specimens (1300 to 2500-mm-wide plates) have revealed that this simple interpretation fails to have a consistency with the case of a long arrested crack. For the inadequacy of static approximation based on arrest toughness concept, the concept of an effective stress intensity factor has been introduced from a practical point of view without a clear quantitative explanation for it. In search of a more relevant theory for fast crack propagation and to see how the neglect of dynamic aspects affects the interpretation of unstable crack propagation arrest test and philosophy of crack arrest design, a dynamic fracture mechanics analysis was made with the use of the finite-difference method to solve the equation of motion for the two-dimensional elastic problem.

Download or read book Dynamic Fracture written by K. Ravi-Chandar and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2004-10-16 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dynamic fracture in solids has attracted much attention for over a century from engineers as well as physicists due both to its technological interest and to inherent scientific curiosity. Rapidly applied loads are encountered in a number of technical applications. In some cases such loads might be applied deliberately, as for example in problems of blasting, mining, and comminution or fragmentation; in other cases, such dynamic loads might arise from accidental conditions. Regardless of the origin of the rapid loading, it is necessary to understand the mechanisms and mechanics of fracture under dynamic loading conditions in order to design suitable procedures for assessing the susceptibility to fracture. Quite apart from its repercussions in the area of structural integrity, fundamental scientific curiosity has continued to play a large role in engendering interest in dynamic fracture problems In-depth coverage of the mechanics, experimental methods, practical applications Summary of material response of different materials Discussion of unresolved issues in dynamic fracture

Book Dynamic Crack Growth Criteria in Structural Metals

Download or read book Dynamic Crack Growth Criteria in Structural Metals written by A. J. Rosakis and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analytical difficulties associated with the dynamic crack propagation problem have limited the available dynamic solutions to idealized situations. The major limitations introduced by these analytical solutions make both numerical methods and direct experimental observations necessary for the complete understanding of the dynamic fracture process. A principal purpose of experimental studies is to observe directly the instantaneous stress intensity factor as a function of crack speed, and to determine whether or not the observed variation constitutes a material characteristic. The present paper provides a description of dynamic crack propagation experiments on double cantilever beam specimens of a high strength steel. Measurements of the crack tip deformation field and of crack speed during propagation have been made using the optical method of caustics in reflection. A principal advantage of a measurement made directly at the crack tip is that the interpretation of data does not rely on a complete transient stress analysis of the entire specimen. The inherent time dependence of crack propagation experiments requires that many sequential measurements of field quantities be made in an extremely short time and in a way that does not interfere with the process to be observed. Furthermore, the area over which the field quantities are to be measured advances along with the crack tip, and often in a nonuniform way. The method of caustics is attractive for meeting these experimental requirements. (Author).

Book Methods of Analysis and Solutions of Crack Problems

Download or read book Methods of Analysis and Solutions of Crack Problems written by George C. Sih and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is weH known that the traditional failure criteria cannot adequately explain failures which occur at a nominal stress level considerably lower than the ultimate strength of the material. The current procedure for predicting the safe loads or safe useful life of a structural member has been evolved around the discipline oflinear fracture mechanics. This approach introduces the concept of a crack extension force which can be used to rank materials in some order of fracture resistance. The idea is to determine the largest crack that a material will tolerate without failure. Laboratory methods for characterizing the fracture toughness of many engineering materials are now available. While these test data are useful for providing some rough guidance in the choice of materials, it is not clear how they could be used in the design of a structure. The understanding of the relationship between laboratory tests and fracture design of structures is, to say the least, deficient. Fracture mechanics is presently at astandstill until the basic problems of scaling from laboratory models to fuH size structures and mixed mode crack propagation are resolved. The answers to these questions require some basic understanding ofthe theory and will not be found by testing more specimens. The current theory of fracture is inadequate for many reasons. First of aH it can only treat idealized problems where the applied load must be directed normal to the crack plane.

Book IUTAM Symposium on Nonlinear Analysis of Fracture

Download or read book IUTAM Symposium on Nonlinear Analysis of Fracture written by J.R. Willis and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume constitutes the Proceedings of the IUTAM Symposium on 'Nonlinear Analysis of Fracture', held in Cambridge from 3rd to 7th Septem ber 1995. Its objective was to assess and place on record the current state of understanding of this important class of phenomena, from the standpoints of mathematics, materials science, physics and engineering. All fracture phenomena are nonlinear; the reason for inclusion of this qualification in the title was to reflect the intention that emphasis should be placed on distinctive aspects of nonlinearity, not only with regard to material consti tutive behaviour but also with regard to insights gained, particularly from the mathematics and physics communities, during the recent dramatic ad vances in understanding of nonlinear systems in general. The expertise represented in the Symposium was accordingly very wide, and many of the world's greatest authorities in their respective fields participated. The Symposium remained focussed on issues of practical significance for fracture phenomena, with concentration on aspects that are still im perfectly understood. The most significant unifying issue in this regard is that of scale: this theme was addressed from several perspectives. One important aspect is the problem of passing information on one scale up or down, as an input for analysis at another scale. Although this is not always the case, it may be that the microscopic process of fracture is understood in some particular class of materials.
