Book Virginia Place Names

Download or read book Virginia Place Names written by Raus McDill Hanson and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What Virginia county, river, mountain range and town share the same name--a name which means "Daughter of the Stars"? Any age group can easily find some surprises, and some humorous historical examples where the local residents had difficulties in agreeing on the name chosen. So the "mail can go through", post offices must have distinct names but geographical place names, which show much less originality and even a bit over-used, are rather frequent. The organization of the book into county areas and the largest independent cities, together with its index were planned to make it a ready reference. Adults will find the book has helpful and concise information for many places, a great amount of history as well as geography. The included information for many places make the book rank as a Virginia encyclopedia. -- Front book flap.

Book Mapping Nature across the Americas

Download or read book Mapping Nature across the Americas written by Kathleen A. Brosnan and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2021-10-19 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maps are inherently unnatural. Projecting three-dimensional realities onto two-dimensional surfaces, they are abstractions that capture someone’s idea of what matters within a particular place; they require selections and omissions. These very characteristics, however, give maps their importance for understanding how humans have interacted with the natural world, and give historical maps, especially, the power to provide rich insights into the relationship between humans and nature over time. That is just what is achieved in Mapping Nature across the Americas. Illustrated throughout, the essays in this book argue for greater analysis of historical maps in the field of environmental history, and for greater attention within the field of the history of cartography to the cultural constructions of nature contained within maps. This volume thus provides the first in-depth and interdisciplinary investigation of the relationship between maps and environmental knowledge in the Americas—including, for example, stories of indigenous cartography in Mexico, the allegorical presence of palm trees in maps of Argentina, the systemic mapping of US forests, and the scientific platting of Canada’s remote lands.

Download or read book The Five George Masons written by Pamela C. Copeland and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2016-03-08 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Founding Father, a patriot in the Revolutionary War, a delegate from Virginia to the Constitutional Convention, and one of the driving forces behind the creation of the U.S. Bill of Rights, George Mason (1725-1792) worked passionately and diligently throughout his life, both as a private citizen and as a public servant, to ensure that government protected the inherent rights of the people. The Five George Masons, first published in 1975, provides a comprehensive overview of five generations of the Mason family, beginning with George Mason I, who fled England following the defeat of the Royalists at the second battle of Worcester in 1651, arriving in the Colony of Virginia in the early 1650s. Central to this volume, of course, is George Mason IV, who, while less celebrated than his fellow Virginians George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, was one of America’s outstanding thinkers, legislators, and writers; his ideals and legacy endure to this day. This second edition includes a new foreword as well as color photos and maps, while faithfully reproducing the original edition’s unique genealogical charts of the Mason family. In tracing the family history of the Masons, the book provides important context for understanding the life and work of George Mason IV, who wrote: "All men are by nature equally free and inde¬pendent, and have certain inherent rights." The Five George Masons serves as a uniquely valuable resource for histo¬rians, educators, genealogists, and all those interested in the history of Virginia and the early United States.
