Book The Management of Industrial Forest Plantations

Download or read book The Management of Industrial Forest Plantations written by José G. Borges and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-09-01 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Management of Industrial Forest Plantations. Theoretical Foundations and Applications provides a synthesis of current knowledge about industrial forestry management planning processes. It covers components of the forest supply chain ranging from modelling techniques to management planning approaches and information and communication technology support. It may provide effective support to education, research and outreach activities that focus on forest industrial plantations management. It may contribute further to support forest managers when developing industrial plantations management plans. The book includes the discussion of applications in 26 Management Planning in Actions boxes. These applications highlight the linkage between theory and practice and the contribution of models, methods and management planning approaches to the efficiency and the effectiveness of industrial plantations management planning.

Book Growing Plantation Forests

Download or read book Growing Plantation Forests written by P. W. West and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-10-21 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the scientific principles that are used throughout the world to ensure the rapid, healthy growth of forest plantations. As the population of the world increases so does the amount of wood people use. Large areas of natural forests are being cleared every year and converted to other uses. Almost as large an area of plantation forests is being established annually to replace those lost natural forests. Eventually, plantations will produce a large proportion of the wood used around the world for firewood, building, the manufacture of paper and bioenergy. Forest plantations can also provide various environmental benefits including carbon storage, rehabilitation of degraded land, serving as disposal sites for various forms of industrial or agricultural waste and enhancing biodiversity in regions that have been largely cleared for agriculture. Whatever their motivation, plantation forest growers want their plantations to be healthy and grow rapidly to achieve their purpose as soon as possible. This book discusses how this is done. It is written for a worldwide audience, from forestry professionals and scientists through to small plantation growers, and describes how plantations may be grown responsibly and profitably.

Book Plantation silviculture

Download or read book Plantation silviculture written by K.R. Shepherd and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plantations of a wide range of tree species have assumed an important place in our world, providing wood for industry, fuelwood and animal fodder, protection from adverse environments and for the soil, as well as amenity and aesthetically pleasing landscapes. silvicultural knowledge of this particular branch of forestry first developed in Europe more than two centuries ago but in many parts of the world is still in a process of rapid evolution as more and more plantations are established to meet specific needs. The first exotic tree species to be established in plantations in my own country were planted more than a century ago and, likewise, New Zealand has a long history of planting. Both countries have developed a vigorous and innovative approach to plantation practice, soundly based initially on European experience but gradually modified to meet the challenges of new environments, new markets, and changed economic circumstances. This book on plantation silviculture was begun some years ago when the lack of a suitable undergraduate text for teaching purposes became apparent. The present text is aimed essentially at this audience. Although I have drawn heavily on the experience of Australia and New Zealand, the principles outlined are applicable anywhere in the world where plantations are being grown and tended, from the United States and Scandinavia to India, South Africa or Brazil. The text should also serve as a useful reference to advanced students and practicing foresters, with the reference list providing an introduction to the literature on this subject.

Book excerpt: This book provides a cross-section of all outstanding experience in all fields of tropical forestry under a drastically changing environment induced by climate change. It sheds light on the existing know-how and presents it in a concise and efficient way for the scientist and professional in charge of planning, implementing and evaluating forest resources. The Tropical Forestry Handbook provides proven and/or promising alternative concepts which can be applied to solve organizational, administrative and technical challenges prevailing in the tropics. Presented are state of the art methods in all fields concerning tropical forestry. Emphasize is given to methods which are adapted to- and which safeguard - environmental conditions.

Book Plantation Forestry in the Tropics

Download or read book Plantation Forestry in the Tropics written by Julian Evans and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2004-04-15 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Development of planted forests in tropical and subtropical countries is accelerating to satisfy the ever-growing global demand for wood products. It is expected that within 20 years half of all wood fibre in the world will be sourced from plantations, of which more than half are in the tropics and subtropics. Active community involvement in tree planting as part of rural development is now widespread and welcome. Plantation Forestry in the Tropics provides an overview that sets plantation silviculture in the wider context of development processes and their social, environmental and ecological impacts. The structure and approach of previous editions have been retained but every chapter has been comprehensively revised and updated. Two new chapters, one on clonal forestry, the other on ecological restoration, have been added.

Book The Comparative Economics of Plantation Forestry

Download or read book The Comparative Economics of Plantation Forestry written by Roger A. Sedjo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-09-25 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plantation forestry is the planting, managing, and harvesting of trees for the production of industrial wood. Originally published in 1983, the principal focus and contribution of the study lies in Roger Sedjo’s examination of the economic returns in twelve forest regions throughout the world. The results of the analysis strongly demonstrate the feasibility of major expansion of plantation forestry in a number of areas around the world and suggest the likelihood of major shifts in the principal supply areas. The results also have potentially important implications for countering the threats of deforestation. This title will be of interest for students of Environmental Studies.

Book Comprehensive Timber Harvest Planning for Plantation Forests on Difficult Terrain

Download or read book Comprehensive Timber Harvest Planning for Plantation Forests on Difficult Terrain written by Dunstan T. K. Shemwetta and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plantation forests on mountainous areas in Tanzania, East Africa, were successfully established in the 1950's. Harvesting started in the 1970's to meet increased national timber demand. Current problems of unharvested areas and potential environmental degradation are associated with uncontrolled harvests, mismatch of harvest systems to site needs, and post-harvest practices. Comprehensive harvest planning is offered as the needed solution. Effective timber harvest planning is proposed for successful harvesting using a suggested process and protocol. Planning for difficult terrain in the United States Pacific Northwest (PNW) provides valuable lessons for objective refinement, systems selection, monitoring and planning tools of the protocol. An area on the Sokoine University of Agriculture Training Forest (SUATF), Tanzania, with difficult terrain, valuable timber, and environmentally sensitive conditions is used to develop a planning protocol and monitoring guidelines for harvesting. A reference area on the Warm Springs Indian Reservation (WSIR) of Oregon provides comparative data for the project. Plan objectives, planning tools, harvesting systems options, implementation requirements and monitoring criteria were explored through observation, interviews and analytical procedures. A planning procedure incorporating the technical, economical and institutional timber harvesting factors of Tanzania and other similar circumstances is demonstrated. Guidelines for monitoring plan execution and harvesting impacts are shown, with a new emphasis on research monitoring. The study recommendations and summary will help Tanzania national forestry policy to avoid crisis management in harvesting operations.
