Malgré ce chiffre relativement important, les troubles des apprentissages restent l'un des domaines les moins connus et les plus débattus. Ces troubles font obstacle à la réussite scolaire, peuvent apparaître dans un contexte de retard global, ou être plus spécifiques en cas de déficit limité à un certain processus cognitif. Ils concernent une large palette de troubles qui va des troubles du langage et de la parole aux troubles des aptitudes perceptives ou motrices. Les troubles spécifiques des apprentissages ont fait l'objet de différentes définitions qui n'ont cessées d'évoluer grâce aux résultats issus de la recherche. Cependant, parce que certaines définitions ne donnent pas de critères diagnostiques précis, il subsiste un abus d'utilisation de ces conceptions. L'approche neuropsychologique des troubles des apprentissages développée au sein du présent ouvrage insiste sur la nécessité de définir ces troubles de manière précise d'un point de vue sémiologique, étiologique et anatomo-clinique afin de pouvoir mettre en place la prise en charge la plus adaptée. Les différents auteurs ayant contribué au présent ouvrage ont ainsi fait l'effort de caractériser les troubles de la lecture, du calcul, des fonctions exécutives, de la perception, de l'action sans oublier les troubles envahissants du développement et les troubles des apprentissages des enfants précoces, en adoptant une démarche neuropsychologique visant à définir d'un point de vue clinique et théorique les mécanismes cognitifs déficitaires, les dysfonctionnements cérébraux qui leur sont associés et leur origine possible. C'est donc un état des connaissances sur l'ensemble du domaine des troubles des apprentissages qui est proposé au lecteur et qui rend compte des avancées significatives de ces dernières années tant d'un point de vue clinique que théorique et expérimental. La prise en compte de ces nouvelles données dans le cadre de la neuropsychologie nous permet de mieux comprendre l'origine et la nature des troubles des apprentissages ainsi que leur lien avec le développement normal et nous donne l'occasion d'optimiser la prise en charge de ces enfants afin de réduire l'impact délétère de ces troubles sur le développement de l'enfant et sur ses interactions avec le monde extérieur.

Attention deficithyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has been a common psychiatric diagnosis in both children and adults since the 1980s and 1990s in the United States. But the diagnosis was much less common—even unknown—in other parts of the world. By the end of the twentieth century, this was no longer the case, and ADHD diagnosis and treatment became an increasingly widespread global phenomenon. As the diagnosis was adopted around the world, the definition and treatment of ADHD often changed in the context of different psychiatric professions, medical systems, and cultures. Global Perspectives on ADHD is the first book to examine how this expanding public health concern is diagnosed and treated in 16 different countries. Indeed, one child out of 20 experiences one or more seizures before the age of 5, and one in a hundred develops epilepsy as a chronic disorder. Approximately half of these children with epilepsy display academic difficulties and/or behavioral disorders. Moreoever, it is now believed that a sizable proportion of children with learning disability suffer from undiagnosed epilepsy. While a great number of textbooks have been devoted to various medical aspects of chi- hood epilepsy (diagnosis, genetics, etiology, drug and surgical treatment, etc.), there have been no comprehensive accounts of the cognitive consequences of this condition. Advance of medical knowledge has shown that childhood epilepsy should not be considered as a single disorder but encompasses a whole range of different conditions that exhibit specific clinical EEG and outcome characteristics. It is not becoming apparent that these various clinical entities have different cognitive expression that yet need to be specified. The purpose of this book is to provide a complete up-to-date analysis of this multi-faceted pathology.

While reviewing belief systems that support crime, Walters also offers a model of change through which belief systems incongruent with crime can be constructed. He begins with a review of six traditional criminological models, each of which is considered to possess sufficient breadth and substance to advance our understanding of crime. Information gathered from these major theoretical systems is integrated wtih research from developmental psychology to create a system of crime-congruent belief systems. This change model revolves around four core elements—responsibility, confidence, meaning, community—each of which is emphasized in a clinician's interactions with clients seeking to abandon crime-congruent lifestyles. As Walters maintains, belief systems are instrumental in both the development and cessation of crime-congruent lifestyles.
