Book excerpt: Cette étude s'intéresse à l'apprentissage et la mémorisation des connaissances orthographiques lexicales chez les enfants sourds. Nous avons souhaité étudier l'efficacité d'une stratégie rééducative : la méthode visuo-sémantique (L'orthographe illustrée, S. Valdois, M-P. De Partz, X. Seron et M.Hulin), qui nous a semblé particulièrement originale et intéressante pour les enfants sourds. En effet, il s'agit d'une méthode basée sur la mémoire visuelle et, en raison de leur déficit sensoriel auditif, nous pouvons penser que les enfants sourds vont avoir une utilisation particulièrement efficace des données visuelles. Nous avons réalisé une application contrôlée de la méthode visuo-sémantique, comparée à une méthode verbale auprès de 12 enfants sourds de 9 à 11 ans. Les résultats respectifs de chacun des enfants sont présentés, accompagnés d'une analyse qualitative et d'observations cliniques. Ils sont suivis des résultats statistiques de notre étude dans sa globalité, prenant en compte l'ensemble des résultats. Les résultats obtenus sont divers : la prise en charge a été efficace mais la méthode visuo-sémantique ne se distingue pas spécifiquement. Nous observons par ailleurs une corrélation significative entre les signes (enfants privilégiant la Langue des signes) et la mémorisation à long terme de mots étudiés au moyen de la méthode visuo- sémantique, ce qui indique un impact du mode de communication sur les stratégies mnésiques

Book excerpt: Dans un système orthographique inconsistant, l’apprenti-scripteur peut recourir à diverses stratégies pour réaliser ses productions orthographiques (Fayol, 2008) et les mémoriser durablement. La pratique de l’accompagnement familial, qui s’inscrit dans une perspective écologique et intégrative, peut, dans le cas des rééducations du langage écrit, s’avérer intéressante. Une telle approche permet de redonner au parent d’enfant dysorthographique une place centrale dans le processus de soin et de l’accompagner dans le rôle de tuteur qui souvent lui revient. L’objectif de cette étude qualitative vise à évaluer l’efficacité d’un protocole d’intervention axé sur la participation des parents aux séances de rééducation du langage écrit (1) sur leur sentiment de compétence, (2) sur le transfert de stratégies adaptées au soutien de l’apprentissage de l’orthographe lexicale au quotidien. Pour cela, nous avons présenté à cinq parents, en situation duelle, une information concernant l’orthographe lexicale et la mémorisation, avant qu’ils ne participent de façon active à 24 séances de rééducation du langage écrit. Une évaluation pré et post-protocole a été réalisée afin de permettre une analyse qualitative. Ces évaluations ont consisté en des enregistrements vidéos d’interactions parent/enfant au cours de tâches scolaires ciblant l’orthographe lexicale, un questionnaire d’auto-évaluation du sentiment de compétence des parents ainsi qu’un entretien clinique semi-dirigé. Les résultats obtenus montrent que la participation active des parents à ce protocole d’intervention a permis de renforcer leur sentiment de compétence à apporter un soutien qu’ils jugent efficace. En revanche, nous avons relevé une hétérogénéité dans l’investissement des stratégies développées durant les séances par les parents. De plus, les stratégies orthographiques présentées semblent être plus difficilement appliquées que celles en lien avec la mémorisation des formes orthographiques travaillées. Il serait intéressant de prévoir une évaluation de l’intervention directe et de poser la question de l’influence d’un tel protocole d’intervention sur les performances en orthographe lexicale des enfants

Son acquisition résulte d'un processus développemental qui mobilise des ressources attentionnelles soutenues. Des études ont montré que l'attention visuelle joue un rôle dans la constitution du lexique orthographique. Nous avons donc posé l'hypothèse suivante : une stratégie d'aide à l' encodage des mots devrait améliorer leur mémorisation et leur restitution. Nous avons choisi comme focalisation attentionnelle la mise en relief en rouge des graphies complexes. Notre population est constituée d'enfants tout venant de CEl, CMI et CM2. Nous leur avons proposé une épreuve de copie de 40 mots de complexité orthographique variable. Une dictée a ensuite permis d'évaluer l'apprentissage de ces derniers. Les résultats de notre étude montrent que la mise en relief n'améliore pas l'apprentissage de l'orthographe lexicale. L'aide visuelle proposée ne convient pas aux enfants tout venant qui utilisent majoritairement la médiation phonologique (même chez des scripteurs plus experts comme les CM2). L'épellation pourrait constituer une aide plus adéquate à la mémorisation de l'orthographe des mots. Il serait également intéressant de reproduire cette expérimentation auprès d'une population d'enfants ayant un trouble de nature visuo-attentionnelle : les enfants dyslexiques/dysorthographiques de surface.

Nous faisons l’hypothèse de l’existence d’une corrélation significative entre le niveau d’orthographe lexicale et les compétences d’identification de mots écrits. Un protocole d’orthographe a été administré collectivement à 184 enfants dans 8 classes de CM1. Les 20 enfants ayant le moins bien réussi ces épreuves et les 20 ayant obtenu les meilleurs résultats ont ensuite participé à un protocole individuel centré sur la lecture. Chacune des tâches proposées avait pour but d’évaluer des processus et les compétences de lecture spécifique. On obtient des corrélations significatives entre les performances de lecture et d’orthographe pour l’ensemble des sujets, moins significatives cependant chez les enfants déficients en orthographe lexicale. Comparés au groupe des enfants performants en orthographe lexicale, les enfants en difficulté dans ce domaine ont obtenu des scores significativement inférieurs à chacune des épreuves de lecture. Une analyse détaillée de chaque épreuve a permis de souligner des différences qualitatives entre les deux groupes. Cette étude confirme donc l’interdépendance de la lecture et de l’orthographe. Elle apporte un éclairage sur les stratégies de lecture des bons et mauvais orthographieurs.

The chapters focus on five pertinent areas reflecting different, but related research topics: * space in language and gesture, * point of view and referential shift, * morphosyntax of verbs in ASL, * gestural systems and sign language, and * language acquisition and gesture. Sign languages and gestural systems are produced in physical space; they manipulate spatial contrasts for linguistic and communicative purposes. In addition to exploring the different functions of space, researchers discuss similarities and differences between visual-gestural systems -- established sign languages, pidgin sign language (International Sign), "homesign" systems developed by deaf children with no sign language input, novel gesture systems invented by hearing nonsigners, and the gesticulation that accompanies speech. The development of gesture and sign language in children is also examined in both hearing and deaf children, charting the emergence of gesture ("manual babbling"), its use as a prelinguistic communicative device, and its transformation into language-like systems in homesigners.
