Book excerpt: Apprenticed to Justice is a collection of vividly rendered lyrical and narrative poems that trace the complex inheritances of Indigenous America, this âeoestrange map drawn of blood and history.âe It opens with intriguing glimpses of individualsâe"a mother âeoeborn of dawn / in a reckless moon of miscegenation,âe cousins âeoewho rotated authority / on marbles sex and skunk etiquette,âe women âeoeplanting dreams with dank names like rutabaga and kohlrabiâe âe"and it turns on the notion of legacy. From what dark turmoil of earth do we emerge? How and what do we inherit? To what mesh of tangled origins do we live apprenticed? These are the literal and the metaphorical questions Anishinaabe author Kimberly Blaeser asks in this, her third collection of poetry.Grounded in rich details of places from the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness to the arctic region of Kirkenes, Norway, the poems link the people and the landscapes through storytelling. Narratives range from the comedy of a missing outhouse floor to the longing for the return of an MIA. The storied landscapes of the poems, the âeoeRocky bottom allotted land(s) / twenty-eight slow horse miles / from the village store,âe also become intertwined with tribal history. And the remembered tribal accounts of scorched earth campaigns or the Trail of Tears in their turn become enmeshed with contemporary justice issues including Potlatchâe(tm)s relentless clear cutting of forest lands and the strange cannibalism inherent in Sr. Inez Hilgerâe(tm)s study of âeoeotherâe cultures like that at Blaeserâe(tm)s home, White Earth Reservation. Ultimately, attention to these justice issues invoke the lives of tribal elders whose figurative âeoefragile houses / pegged at the corners with only hopeâe somehow represent and teach survival. Finally, each movement in the book connects back to the act of writing, to the poems themselves as both remembrance and a kind of revolutionâe"âeoethese fingers / drumming on keys.âe

Book Apprenticed To Spirit

Download or read book Apprenticed To Spirit written by David Spangler and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2012-08-07 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An absorbing memoir of one man’s path to understanding how we can learn to lead lives of greater blessing and to be sources of blessing and service for the world as a whole. For as long as he can remember, David Spangler has been physically aware of a spiritual world existing alongside this one. In 1965, David Spangler left college to follow an inner spiritual calling and encountered an extraordinary presence, which he named “John.” Over the next quarter-century John would assist David in exploring the “inner worlds” of the spirit, and would tutor him in some of the most basic mysteries of life and the nature of the human spirit. In Apprenticed to Spirit, Spangler recounts how John showed him the way to develop a spiritual intelligence—what Spangler calls “a mind of the soul”—and how to integrate it into everyday life. Spangler learned to think with his soul and embarked on the apprenticeship to understanding the sacredness of our world and of the realms beyond ours—a journey that continues to this day.

Book Apprenticed to Christ

Download or read book Apprenticed to Christ written by Jerry Galipeau and published by . This book was released on 2007-06-01 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inspired by the principle that one learns how to be a Christian by doing what Christians do, Apprenticed to Christ provides catechists with ideas and resources for the "apprenticeship" of catechumens, candidates, and others participating in parish religious formation. This hands-on method, the Church's preferred approach for the catechumenate, is presented in a systematic, easy-to-use format based on the Liturgy of the Word for Sunday Mass, with activities suggested for each Sunday of the three-year cycle of readings. Recommended catechetical resources including the Catechism of the Catholic Church, conciliar documents, papal encyclicals, liturgical documents, and more help to link each suggested activity with the teaching of the Catholic Church. A fresh and fruitful approach for those who work with catechumens, candidates, confirmation preparation, and both youth and adult religious formation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Hirelings, Jennifer Dorsey recreates the social and economic milieu of Maryland's Eastern Shore at a time when black slavery and black freedom existed side by side. She follows a generation of manumitted African Americans and their freeborn children and grandchildren through the process of inventing new identities, associations, and communities in the early nineteenth century. Free Africans and their descendants had lived in Maryland since the seventeenth century, but before the American Revolution they were always few in number and lacking in economic resources or political leverage. By contrast, manumitted and freeborn African Americans in the early republic refashioned the Eastern Shore's economy and society, earning their livings as wage laborers while establishing thriving African American communities. As free workers in a slave society, these African Americans contested the legitimacy of the slave system even while they remained dependent laborers. They limited white planters' authority over their time and labor by reuniting their families in autonomous households, settling into free black neighborhoods, negotiating labor contracts that suited the needs of their households, and worshipping in the African Methodist Episcopal Church. Some moved to the cities, but many others migrated between employers as a strategy for meeting their needs and thwarting employers’ control. They demonstrated that independent and free African American communities could thrive on their own terms. In all of these actions the free black workers of the Eastern Shore played a pivotal role in ongoing debates about the merits of a free labor system.
