From 1999 until 2000, the conflict in North Maluku, Indonesia, saw the most intense communal violence of Indonesia’s period of democratization. For almost a year, militias waged a brutal religious war which claimed the lives of almost four thousand lives. The conflict culminated in ethnic cleansing along lines of religious identity, with approximately three hundred thousand people fleeing their homes. Based on detailed research, this book provides an in depth picture of all aspects of this devastating and brutal conflict. It also provides numerous examples of how different conflict theories can be applied in the analysis of real situations of tensions and violence, illustrating the mutually reinforcing nature of mass level sentiment and elite agency, and the rational and emotive influences on those involved. While sociologists, anthropologists, historians, and political scientists have long analyzed the emotional dynamics of conflict and peace, rarely have educators looked into the emotional complexities of traumatic conflict, the impact of emotion in everyday school interactions and pedagogical practices, and the consequences of the role of emotion in what has become known as "critical peace education." This book not only offers an analysis of the emotional consequences of traumatic conflict in schools, it also develops an innovative, compelling, and cross-disciplinary perspective on the entanglement of emotion, power, politics, trauma, healing, and critical education. The book provides a detailed ethnographic analysis of the ideological appropriation of emotions of conflict in schools, yet it pushes boundaries further through a theorization of the consequences of this appropriation and the pedagogical interventions required to challenge, undermine, or subvert this process. Zembylas argues that these pedagogical interventions, rooted in both psychoanalytic and socio-political perspectives of trauma and emotion, ought to engage emotions as critical and transformative forces in peace education. Grounded in recent literature on affect and emotion that spans the social sciences, Zembylas's analysis of the emotions of traumatic conflict in education offers a provocative proposal for the role of critical peace education in healing and reconciliation.

Book excerpt: Ethnic conflicts are nowadays a frequent phenomenon in what some call a "postwestphalian" world reshaped by the forces of globalization. When they turn violent these conflicts constitute a regional, if not global threat to security and stability as the recent developments in Iraq or Sri Lanka amply demonstrate. But why and how do ethnic conflicts escalate into outbreaks of collective violence? This is the question this small book seeks to address. Drawing on the current debates in the field of conflict studies, the author differentiates between two concepts of ethnic conflict and analyzes the notion of ethnicity as collective identity. Offering explanations for the occurrence of ethnic violence that are situated on three different levels of analysis, he proceeds from the discussion of violence-prone strategic interactions among ethnic groups to the analysis of within-group social dynamics. There elites use appropriately labeled violent incidents in order to rally co-ethnics for political purposes. It is argued that the three levels of analysis are not exclusive, but instead appear complementary once we differentiate between different levels of violence. This book, therefore, proposes a new perspective on collective identity and the escalation of violence in ethnic conflict. It is of interest for those who seek theoretical insights into one of the most pressing political phenomena of our time.
