Book Applying Systematic Local Search to Job Shop Scheduling Problems

Download or read book Applying Systematic Local Search to Job Shop Scheduling Problems written by Lei Duan and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this thesis, the Systematic Local Search, a hybrid search method previously developed in [18] for constraint satisfaction problems, is extended for optimization problems especially in the constraint-based scheduling domain. Also in [10], a novel nogood definition (a nogood is a set of variable assignments that is precluded from any solution to the problem) is proposed as to induce nogoods on the precedence relations of the critical path and a proof demonstrates that this nogood definition captures the optimization criterion and is sound with respect to resolution in search. We evaluate the effectiveness of this extension on the benchmark job shop scheduling problems. Experimental results show that Systematic Local Search outperforms conventional heuristic search methods such as simulated annealing and tabu search and compares favourably with methods designed specifically for the job shop scheduling problems.

Book Job Shop Scheduling with Consideration of Due Dates

Download or read book Job Shop Scheduling with Consideration of Due Dates written by Jens Kuhpfahl and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-06-24 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jens Kuhpfahl analyzes the job shop scheduling problem with minimizing the total weighted tardiness as objective. First, he provides a suitable graph representation based on a disjunctive graph formulation. Second, several key components of local search procedures are analyzed and enhanced. The resulting outputs of these investigations contribute to the development of a new solution procedure whose performance quality leads to superior computational results.

Book Handbook of Constraint Programming

Download or read book Handbook of Constraint Programming written by Francesca Rossi and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2006-08-18 with total page 977 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Constraint programming is a powerful paradigm for solving combinatorial search problems that draws on a wide range of techniques from artificial intelligence, computer science, databases, programming languages, and operations research. Constraint programming is currently applied with success to many domains, such as scheduling, planning, vehicle routing, configuration, networks, and bioinformatics. The aim of this handbook is to capture the full breadth and depth of the constraint programming field and to be encyclopedic in its scope and coverage. While there are several excellent books on constraint programming, such books necessarily focus on the main notions and techniques and cannot cover also extensions, applications, and languages. The handbook gives a reasonably complete coverage of all these lines of work, based on constraint programming, so that a reader can have a rather precise idea of the whole field and its potential. Of course each line of work is dealt with in a survey-like style, where some details may be neglected in favor of coverage. However, the extensive bibliography of each chapter will help the interested readers to find suitable sources for the missing details. Each chapter of the handbook is intended to be a self-contained survey of a topic, and is written by one or more authors who are leading researchers in the area. The intended audience of the handbook is researchers, graduate students, higher-year undergraduates and practitioners who wish to learn about the state-of-the-art in constraint programming. No prior knowledge about the field is necessary to be able to read the chapters and gather useful knowledge. Researchers from other fields should find in this handbook an effective way to learn about constraint programming and to possibly use some of the constraint programming concepts and techniques in their work, thus providing a means for a fruitful cross-fertilization among different research areas. The handbook is organized in two parts. The first part covers the basic foundations of constraint programming, including the history, the notion of constraint propagation, basic search methods, global constraints, tractability and computational complexity, and important issues in modeling a problem as a constraint problem. The second part covers constraint languages and solver, several useful extensions to the basic framework (such as interval constraints, structured domains, and distributed CSPs), and successful application areas for constraint programming.- Covers the whole field of constraint programming- Survey-style chapters- Five chapters on applications

Book Knowledge Based and Intelligent Information and Engineering Systems

Download or read book Knowledge Based and Intelligent Information and Engineering Systems written by Juan D. Velásquez and published by Springer. This book was released on 2009-09-30 with total page 902 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On behalf of KES International and the KES 2009 Organising Committee we are very pleased to present these volumes, the proceedings of the 13th Inter- tional Conference on Knowledge-Based Intelligent Information and Engineering Systems, held at the Faculty of Physical Sciences and Mathematics, University of Chile, in Santiago de Chile. This year, the broad focus of the KES annual conference was on intelligent applications, emergent intelligent technologies and generic topics relating to the theory, methods, tools and techniques of intelligent systems. This covers a wide range of interests, attracting many high-quality papers, which were subjected to a very rigorous review process. Thus, these volumes contain the best papers, carefully selected from an impressively large number of submissions, on an - teresting range of intelligent-systems topics. For the ?rsttime in overa decade of KES events, the annualconferencecame to South America, to Chile. For many delegates this represented the antipode of their own countries. We recognise the tremendous e?ort it took for everyone to travel to Chile, and we hope this e?ort was rewarded. Delegates were presented with the opportunity of sharing their knowledge of high-tech topics on theory andapplicationofintelligentsystemsandestablishinghumannetworksforfuture work in similar research areas, creating new synergies, and perhaps even, new innovative ?elds of study. The fact that this occurred in an interesting and beautiful area of the world was an added bonus.

Book Focused Simulated Annealing Search an Application to Job shop Scheduling

Download or read book Focused Simulated Annealing Search an Application to Job shop Scheduling written by Carnegie-Mellon University. Robotics Institute and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: "This paper presents a simulated annealing search procedure developed to solve job shop scheduling problems simulataneously subject to tardiness and inventory costs. The procedure is shown to significantly increase schedule quality compared to multiple combinations of dispatch rules and release policies, though at the expense of intense computational efforts. A meta-heuristic procedure is developed that aims at increasing the efficiency of simulated annealing by dynamically inflating the costs associated with major inefficiencies in the current solution. Three different variations of this procedure are considered. One of these variations is shown to yield significant reductions in computation time, especially on problems where search is more likely to get trapped in local minima. We analyze why this variation of the meta- heuristic is more effective than the others."

Book Practice and Theory of Automated Timetabling IV

Download or read book Practice and Theory of Automated Timetabling IV written by Edmund Burke and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2003-08-21 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thisvolumecontainsaselectionofpapersfromthe4thInternationalConference on the Practice and Theory of Automated Timetabling (PATAT 2002) held in Gent, August 21–23, 2002. Since the ?rst conference in Edinburgh in 1995, the range of timetabling applications at the conferences has become broader and more diverse. In the s- ected papers volume from the 1995 conference, there were just two contributions (out of 22) which did not speci?cally address school and university timetabling. In the selected papers volume from the 1997 conference in Toronto, the number of papers which tackled non-educational problems increased. Two of the papers addressed more than one timetabling application. In both of these papers, educational applications were considered in addition to other applications. A further three papers were concerned with non-educational applications. The conference steering and programme committees have worked hard to attract a wide range of timetabling applications. In the conference held in Konstanz in 2000, the diversi?cation of timetabling problems increased signi?cantly. Of the 21 selected papers in the postconference volume, just 13 were speci?cally concerned with educational timetabling. In the previous volumes, the papers had been sectioned according to solution technique. In the Konstanz volume the papers were classi?ed according to application domains. One section of the volume was entitled “Employee Timetabling,” while sports timetabling, air?eet scheduling, and general software architectures for timetabling were also represented. In the present volume, more than one-third of the 21 papers discuss problems in application areas other than academic and educational ones. Sports timetabling and hospital timetabling are particularly well represented.

Book Practice and Theory of Automated Timetabling III

Download or read book Practice and Theory of Automated Timetabling III written by Edmund Burke and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-06-29 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the third in an ongoing series of books that deal with the state of the art in timetabling research. It contains a selection of the papers presented at the 3rd International Conference on the Practice and Theory of Automated Timetabling (PATAT 2000) held in Constance, Germany, on August 16{18th, 2000. The conference, once again, brought together researchers, practitioners, and vendors from all over the world working on all aspects of computer-aided timetable generation. The main aim of the PATAT conference series is to serve as an international and inter-disciplinary forum for new timetabling research results and directions. The conference series particularly aims to foster mul- disciplinary timetabling research. Our eld has always attracted scientists from a number of traditional domains including computer science and operational - search and we believe that the cross-fertilisation of ideas from di erent elds and disciplines is a very important factor in the future development of timetabling research. The Constance conference certainly met these aims. As can be seen from the selection of papers in this volume, there was a wide range of interesting approaches and ideas for a variety of timetabling application areas and there were delegates from many di erent disciplines. It is clear that while considerable progress is being made in many areas of timetabling research, there are a number of important issues that researchers still have to face. In a contribution to the previous PATAT conference, George M.

Book Decomposition Methods for Complex Factory Scheduling Problems

Download or read book Decomposition Methods for Complex Factory Scheduling Problems written by Irfan M. Ovacik and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The factory scheduling problem, that of allocating machines to competing jobs in manufacturing facilities to optimize or at least improve system performance, is encountered in many different manufacturing environments. Given the competitive pressures faced by many companies in today's rapidly changing global markets, improved factory scheduling should contribute to a flrm's success. However, even though an extensive body of research on scheduling models has been in existence for at least the last three decades, most of the techniques currently in use in industry are relatively simplistic, and have not made use of this body of knowledge. In this book we describe a systematic, long-term research effort aimed at developing effective scheduling algorithms for complex manufacturing facilities. We focus on a speciflc industrial context, that of semiconductor manufacturing, and try to combine knowledge of the physical production system with the methods and results of scheduling research to develop effective approximate solution procedures for these problems. The class of methods we suggest, decomposition methods, constitute a broad family of heuristic approaches to large, NP-hard scheduling problems which can be applied in other environments in addition to those studied in this book.

Book Scheduling Theory

Download or read book Scheduling Theory written by V. Tanaev and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An increasing interest to scheduling theory can be attributed to the high level of automation of all branches of human activity. The quality of modern production essentially depends on the planning decisions taken at different stages of a production process. Moreover, while the quality of these decisions is improving, the time and flexibility requirements for decision-making are becoming more important. All this stimulates scheduling research. Started as an independent discipline in the early fifties, it now has become an important branch of operations research. In the eighties, the largest Russian publishing house for scientific literature Nauka Publishers, Moscow, issued two books by a group of Byelorussian mathematicians: Scheduling Theory. Single-Stage Systems by V. S. Tanaev, V. S. Gordon and Y. M. Shafransky (1984) and Scheduling Theory. Multi-Stage Systems by V. S. Tanaev, Y. N. Sotskov and V. A. Strusevich (1989). Originally published in Russian, these two books cover two different major problem areas of scheduling theory and can be considered as a two-volume monograph that provides a systematic and comprehensive exposition of the subject. The authors are grateful to Kluwer Academic Publishers for creating the opportunity to publish the English translations of these two books. We are indebted to M. Hazewinkel, J. K. Lenstra, A. H. G. Rinnooy Kan, D. B. Shmoys and W. Szwarc for their supporting the idea of translating the books into English.

Book Solving Permutation Flow shop Scheduling Problems Using Local Search and Constraint Programming

Download or read book Solving Permutation Flow shop Scheduling Problems Using Local Search and Constraint Programming written by James Gibbons and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstraction is a well known technique within Artificial Intelligence. Although it has been used to solve a variety of problems, it has not been widely applied to scheduling problems. The central thesis of this dissertation is that by applying abstraction to Permutation Flow-shop Scheduling Problems (PFSPs), it is possible to make the problems easier to solve, although we expect to pay a price for this improvement through a decrease in the quality of the solution. In order to solve the problems more easily, we consider three different types of abstraction. These three different approaches all have the same goal: reducing problem complexity. In order to achieve this they all concentrate on making the problem smaller. By choosing three different methods, it allows us to compare and contrast the strengths and weaknesses of each method of abstraction. It was believed that abstraction would be independent of the solve technique that was applied to the problem, however this was not the case. Abstraction was tested using tabu search and constraint programming and behaved differently using the two different techniques. We conclude that while abstraction does lead to quicker and better solutions in some cases, this is not universally the case.
