Book excerpt: This Action Plan presents a multi-faceted, multi-modal approach for improving safety at our nation's highway-rail crossings and for the prevention of trespassing on the rights-of-way of our nation's railroads. It is multi-faceted in that it presents enforcement, engineering, education, research, promotional and legislative initiatives addressing crossings of both light and conventional rail rights-of-way by public and private streets and highways. The objectives were to reduce the number of highway-rail crossing accidents and casualties while not impeding, but facilitating, the contribution potential of the highway and rail infrastructure on the nation's economy.

Book Engineering Design for Pedestrian Safety at Highway Rail Grade Crossings

Download or read book Engineering Design for Pedestrian Safety at Highway Rail Grade Crossings written by U. S. Department U.S. Department of Transportation and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2017-01-29 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research was conducted to assess innovative and practical solutions for pedestrian grade crossing treatments, to make recommendations and guidelines for future upgrade projects, and to identify additional research for pedestrian treatments for which safety benefit analyses have not been conducted or are not understood. In addition to researching publicly available information of use of pedestrian grade crossing treatments, an outreach effort was made to each commuter and intercity passenger railroad within the United States. Amtrak, Caltrain, Capital Metro, Coaster, Metrolink, New Jersey Transit, and Long Island Railroad responded and shared some of their solutions to pedestrian safety at railroad grade crossings. Their solutions include inter-track fencing, pedestrian gates, swing gates, channelization, and detectable warnings, as well as other devices (audible warnings, etc.) that are not the focus of this research

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive analysis and review was undertaken of available data and information applicable to the problem of improving safety at highway rail grade crossings. A probability model was developed for forecasting the probability of accident occurrence at crossings. The model allows the separate prediction of expected accidents which involve trains and accidents which do not involve trains but occur at the crossing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Traffic channelization devices have found new application at highway-rail grade crossings with active warning devices. Numerous studies conducted at locations where they have been installed show positive changes in unsafe driver behavior as a result of the treatments. When meeting certain requirements, traffic channelization devices and median barriers are an approved supplemental safety measure for the establishment of quiet zones. Traffic channelization devices are low cost and this makes them an attractive option for improving safety at highway-rail grade crossings."--Technical report documentation page.
