Book Applying Distributed and Transformational Leadership Theories to Increase Opportunities for Women in Senior Educational Leadership in Saudi Arabia

Download or read book Applying Distributed and Transformational Leadership Theories to Increase Opportunities for Women in Senior Educational Leadership in Saudi Arabia written by Refah Aldawsari and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Saudi Arabia, the lack of representation of women in senior educational leadership is a problem that continues to plague the quality of K-12 educations in girls' schools in the nation. In this paper, I will address the likely causes and outcomes of this issue and will suggest strategies for change that focus on the implementation of distributed and transformational theories of leadership to encourage renovation in Saudi girls' school curricula. This paper also analyzes and compares some aspects of the Saudi boys' and girls' K-12 curriculum and conducts a survey that will present current opinions of the roles women play in the Saudi Arabian educational environment. The most surprising and important finding of my survey was that the percentage of men who would accept women as leaders was higher than the percentage of men who would not accept women as leaders. This is contrary to what seen on a society and community level in Saudi Arabia.

Book Women s Representation in Leadership Theory Textbooks Used in Education Courses

Download or read book Women s Representation in Leadership Theory Textbooks Used in Education Courses written by Colleen Rai Pawlicki and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to explore the ways in which women and women's experiences with leadership theories and their construction are represented and made visible within leadership theory textbooks. Since the early 20th century, leadership theories have been developed and studied to explain the characteristics and practices of effective leaders. The study of leadership has continued to the present day, and concepts of leadership are used across disciplines, including education. However, from their inception, leadership theories have often excluded women and have been found to represent the experiences of white, middle class, heterosexual men in leadership positions. Leadership theories as a canon are taught at the graduate level in leadership-focused courses, including in educational leadership programs. From the perspective of critical discourse analysis, in which discourse is both constitutive and constituted, discourse in leadership theory is both constituted by and constitutive of leadership practice. As such, how, where, when, and in what ways women are represented in theory matters, as it produces particular constructions of what it means to be a woman-leader in a practical setting. As women continue to be under-represented in educational leadership positions, it is worth investigating the ways in which women are represented in the teaching of leadership through leadership theories. Through this study, the following research questions were addressed: (1) To what extent through frequency are women represented in leadership theory textbooks? and (2) Through discourse, in what ways are the experiences of women in relationship to leadership theories made visible within leadership theory textbooks? Data was drawn from three popular leadership theory textbooks in the education field and analyzed through frequency analysis and critical discourse analysis. This dissertation focused specifically on charismatic and transformational leadership, as these are the most popular leadership theories cited in modern educational leadership scholarship. Findings from this study provide further insights into the discourse of leadership and can help inform local-level policy relating to leadership theory curriculum.

Book Saudi Arabian Women s Lived Experiences Attaining Higher Education Deanships

Download or read book Saudi Arabian Women s Lived Experiences Attaining Higher Education Deanships written by Sarah Abdullah Alhoian and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Saudi Arabian women are underrepresented in higher education leadership positions. To take advantage of opportunities and have lasting effects on future generations of women, women must learn to attain leadership positions such as academic deanships. Deans are in a uniquely influential position as they engage in many significant aspects of educational leadership, such as academics, operations, and administrative aspects of colleges and universities. The purpose of this qualitative study is to understand the lived experiences of female deans to understand the specific supports and challenges they faced in attaining their leadership positions. These challenges and supports are embedded in the unique structural, cultural, and familial aspects of Saudi Arabia and its higher education system. This study helps to highlight what types of supports and challenges may lead to more females attaining the deanship. The research question guiding this study was: How do Saudi Arabian female deans experience attaining their leadership role? This study was unique in that I interviewed women working in the position of the deanship, while other studies have examined different facets of general leadership. Specific structural, cultural, and familial aspects of higher education and how they are significant for female leaders to attain the deanship have been largely underrepresented in academic studies. I used a phenomenological approach to study ten female deans, and I interviewed them using open-ended questions from five regions in Saudi Arabia. Through the data analysis process, I developed nine significant themes: (a) path to the deanship; (b) structural supports; (c) structural challenges; (d) cultural supports; (e) cultural challenges; (f) family supports; (g) family challenges; (h) other challenges; (i) other supports. Under the theme of the path to the deanship, I found that female deans believe having significant academic and administrative leadership experiences, serving on service committees, and working on academic accreditation increases their chances of becoming a dean. Under the theme of structural challenges, I found that they faced unique barriers, including the criteria for selection, centralization, and lack of authority for decision making. Under the theme of structural supports, the women deans received external and internal leadership training prepared by their universities or the Ministry of Education that allowed them to engage with leaders of different levels at various universities, and who demonstrated various leadership styles. Other structural supports included the advantages of all-women colleges and universities. Another structural supports is succession training. Under the theme of culture supports, deans described a variety of supports, including the absence of a gender wage gap. Other findings under the theme of other supports, included (a) the Saudi’s new Vision 2030 governmental policy for women’s empowerment, and (b) personal characteristics and experiences. Characteristics included the ability to mingle and work with others. Experiences included excellent relationships and active mentoring. There are more challenges and supports identified in this study that could guide policymakers in supporting female deans.

Book The Perceptions of Saudi Arabia Higher Educational Leaders on Servant Leadership The Use of Authority and Power

Download or read book The Perceptions of Saudi Arabia Higher Educational Leaders on Servant Leadership The Use of Authority and Power written by Areej Abdullah Shafai and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the rapid changes occurring in Saudi Arabia toward achieving Saudi's 2030 vision, more opportunities and developments will emerge in education and leadership, as one of the main orientations of the vision. The Ministry of Higher Education in Saudi Arabia seeks to raise the quality of higher education and its features to provide outputs that contribute to serving the community and economic development. Responding to the requirements of the labor market, the Ministry of Higher Education is seeking to make higher education in Saudi Arabia competitive with higher education systems in other developed countries. Thus, improving leadership in higher education institutions has become more essential than ever. This study explored the perceptions of higher education leaders on servant leadership as a leadership style. It also aimed to define their practices of authority and power as a significant pillar of servant leadership. A qualitative method was used to collect and analyze the data for this study. Ten department chairs from various regions of Saudi Arabia were interviewed to gain their perspectives and stories regarding their practice of servant leadership. The interviews were digitally recorded and transcribed, then coded and analyzed with Dedoose web-based qualitative data-analysis software. The major findings from this study emerged around the five main themes that answered the five research questions: experience of leadership, characteristics of servant leadership, service, authority and power, and challenges of applying servant leadership in Saudi Arabia. One major finding of this study was that Saudi higher education leaders lack leadership education and training. They were unfamiliar with various leadership styles in general, and the term servant leadership in particular. Findings also demonstrated a tight link between servant leadership and Islamic principles, as Prophet Mohammed (peace be upon him) embraced the leadership approach that puts people and their needs as a top priority. The findings clearly indicated that Saudi higher education leaders use formal authority and still perceive formal authority as a major controlling element. Formal authority and moral authority complement each other. More importantly, servant leadership is an appropriate method of leadership to be applied in higher education institutions in Saudi Arabia. However, shifting from a traditional style of leadership that relies on authority to servant leadership needs to be gradual to reduce potential risks as a result of this significant transition.

Book Adaptive Leadership

Download or read book Adaptive Leadership written by Rachel Kohman and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adaptive leadership is a framework of leadership that affects both the individual leader as well as the relational connections in the challenges being faced in today’s world. Alternative to prevailing leadership theories that heavily focus on individualistic and hierarchical considerations, adaptive leadership focuses on connection and results of actions for challenges that do not have a clear-cut solution. These influences may be more significant for female-identifying individuals who historically have been disenfranchised in leadership experiences. This narrative inquiry examines the internalization of and application of adaptive leadership for female-identifying professionals in higher education. The inquiry includes an examination of how these study participants have deployed adaptive leadership competencies, of how this theory influenced their perception of themselves and their abilities, and of their reflections on how they best learned and continue to utilize adaptive leadership in their leadership practice. A greater understanding of how adaptive leadership is applied and the effects on females using this approach can increase awareness of how to apply this leadership theory to higher education curriculum. This research provides opportunities to consider how to best continue developing female leaders earlier in their careers to shift the scales of disparity regarding female representation in leadership roles in higher education.

Book Women and Leadership in Higher Education

Download or read book Women and Leadership in Higher Education written by Karen A. Longman and published by IAP. This book was released on 2014-09-01 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women and Leadership in Higher Education is the first volume in a new series of books (Women and Leadership: Research, Theory, and Practice) that will be published in upcoming years to inform leadership scholars and practitioners. This book links theory, research, and practice of women’s leadership in various higher education contexts and offers suggestions for future leadership development strategies. This volume focuses on the field of higher education, particularly within the context of the United States—a sector that serves a majority of students at all degree levels who are women, yet lacks parity by women in senior leadership roles. The book’s fifteen chapters present both hard facts regarding the current demographic realities within higher education and fresh thinking about how progress can and must be made in order for U.S. higher education to benefit from the perspectives of women at the senior leadership table. The book’s opening section provides data and analysis in addressing “The State of Women and Leadership in Higher Education”; the second section offers descriptions of three effective models for women’s leadership development at the national and institutional levels; the third section draws from recent research to present “Women’s Experiences and Contributions in Higher Education Leadership.” The book concludes with five shorter chapters written by current and former college and university presidents who offer “Lessons from the Trenches” for the benefit of those who follow. In short, the thesis of the book is that our world is changing; higher education collectively, as well as institutions of all types, must change. Bringing more women into leadership is critical to the goal of moving our society and world forward in healthier ways.
