A critical element in improving transportation decision-making and the effectiveness of transportation systems related to operations and planning is through the use of analysis tools and methods. This brochure is one in a series of five intended to improve the way existing analysis tools are used to advance operational strategies in the planning process. The specifi c objective of developing this informational brochure series was to provide reference and resource materials that will help planners and operations professionals to use existing transportation planning and operations analysis tools and methods in a more systematic way to better analyze, evaluate, and report the benefi ts of needed investments in transportation operations. This particular case study focused on the application of archived data as a tool for operations planning. This case study summarizes an effort involving the use of archived data for operations planning conducted for the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) in the San Francisco Bay Area"--Technical report documentation page.

Book excerpt: "More and more, transportation system operators are seeing the benefits of strengthening links between planning and operations. A critical element in improving transportation decision-making and the effectiveness of transportation systems related to operations and planning is through the use of analysis tools. The use of the term "Tools" in this context is meant not only to include physical software and devoted analytical applications, but also more basic analysis methods and procedures as well. The intent of this brochure, and four accompanying case study brochures, is to help planners and operations professionals use existing transportation planning and operations analysis tools and methods in a more systematic way to better analyze, evaluate, and report the benefits of needed investments in transportation operations, to make the overall transportation system work better."--Technical report documentation page

This particular case study focused on using Highway Capacity Manual (HCM) procedures in long-range transportation planning for arterial signalization strategies. To better estimate link capacity, this case study developed an automated methodology to 1) transfer demand volumes from a regional model to software implementing the HCM Urban Streets procedure, 2) combine the volumes with known traffic signal timings to calculate a link-specific capacity, and 3) transfer that capacity back to the regional model for the next iteration. In addition, operational treatments that can influence capacity can be accounted for in the HCM-implementing software, thus allowing the effects of these treatments to be reflected in the regional model output"--Technical report documentation page.

The main problem of interfacing travel demand models with microsimulation models is that the demands produced by demand models are not as capacity constrained as they need to be for use in microsimulation models. The result is that the microsimulation model produces unrealistic facility performance estimates when it is given unrealistic calibration year and future year demands. The solution is to adjust the travel demand model demands to more realistic levels that refl ect the physical limitations of the network. This brochure describes two case studies for applying simulation models in combination with travel demand models: 1) the traditional approach performing these adjustments outside of the travel demand model; and 2) an advanced approach that makes many of the demand adjustments within the demand model"--Technical report documentation page.

Book Decision Process and Trade off Analysis Model for Supply Rotation and Planning

Download or read book Decision Process and Trade off Analysis Model for Supply Rotation and Planning written by and published by American Water Works Association. This book was released on 2006 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because Tampa Bay Water added new and diverse water sources to its supply mix recently, source rotation and production scheduling became more complex. To address this challenge, Tampa Bay Water developed and implemented a decision making process to aid annual water source rotation and planning decision making that is discussed in this report. A multi-attribute utility analytical (MUA) tool, named the Source Management and Rotation Technology Tool (SMARTT), was developed to evaluate water source planning alternatives. This provides a framework to assess water source combinations and assist policy makers in making effective decisions that meet water quality, environmental, social, operational and financial objectives. Includes some color pages and CD with literature review data.

Book Integrating Planning and Operations Models to Predict Work Zone Traffic

Download or read book Integrating Planning and Operations Models to Predict Work Zone Traffic written by Ayman Smadi and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The impetus of this research is to meet the growing need for accurate and practical methods to support traffic analysis in work zones. This research examines the application of two classes of traffic analysis models, macroscopic sketch analysis and microscopic traffic simulation, to work zones. The research will evaluate the application of these tools to an urban interstate work zone. Specifically, this research will examine the following: 1) how the use of traffic analysis models relates to federal requirements about considering traffic impacts of major construction projects, 2) the accuracy of model results in comparison to real-world conditions, and 3) modeling effort and data requirements of these models. The primary objectives of this research are as follows: 1) determining the feasibility of applying a traffic analysis model to a work zone environment, 2) calibrating and validating the simulation models based on data collected in the work zone, 3) using the calibrated model to apply various work zone management strategies, and 4) documenting the research findings and lessons learned from the model applications.

Book Application of the Systems Approach to the Management of Complex Water Systems

Download or read book Application of the Systems Approach to the Management of Complex Water Systems written by Slobodan P. Simonovic and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-12-23 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past five decades, we have witnessed a tremendous evolution in water resource system management. Three characteristics of this evolution are of particular note: First, the application of the systems approach to complex water management problems has been established as one of the most important advances in the field of water resource management. Second, the past five decades have brought a remarkable transformation of attitude in the water resource management community towards environmental concerns and action to address these concerns. Third, applying the principles of sustainability to water resource decision-making requires major changes in the objectives on which decisions are based, and an understanding of the complicated inter-relationships between existing ecological, economic, and social factors. The Special Issue includes 15 contributions that offer insights into contemporary problems, approaches, and issues related to the management of complex water resources systems. It will be presumptuous to say that these 15 contributions characterize the success or failure of the systems approach to support water resources decision-making. However, these contributions offer interesting lessons from current experiences and highlight possible future work.

Book Water Systems Analysis Design and Planning

Download or read book Water Systems Analysis Design and Planning written by Mohammad Karamouz and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-12-28 with total page 959 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents three distinct pillars for analysis, design, and planning: urban water cycle and variability as the state of water being; landscape architecture as the medium for built-by-design; and total systems as the planning approach. The increasing demand for water and urban and industrial expansions have caused myriad environmental, social, economic, and political predicaments. More frequent and severe floods and droughts have changed the resiliency and ability of water infrastructure systems to operate and provide services to the public. These concerns and issues have also changed the way we plan and manage our water resources. Focusing on urban challenges and contexts, the book provides foundational information regarding water science and engineering while also examining topics relating to urban stormwater, water supply, and wastewater infrastructures. It also addresses critical emerging issues such as simulation and economic modeling, flood resiliency, environmental visualization, satellite data applications, and digital data model (DEM) advancements. Features: Explores various theoretical, practical, and real-world applications of system analysis, design, and planning of urban water infrastructures Discusses hydrology, hydraulics, and basic laws of water flow movement through natural and constructed environments Describes a wide range of novel topics ranging from water assets, water economics, systems analysis, risk, reliability, and disaster management Examines the details of hydrologic and hydrodynamic modeling and simulation of conceptual and data-driven models Delineates flood resiliency, environmental visualization, pattern recognition, and machine learning attributes Explores a compilation of tools and emerging techniques that elevate the reader to a higher plateau in water and environmental systems management Water Systems Analysis, Design, and Planning: Urban Infrastructure serves as a useful resource for advanced undergraduate and graduate students taking courses in the areas of water resources and systems analysis, as well as practicing engineers and landscape professionals.
