Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Applied Psychology for Foundation Year: Key Ideas for Foundation Courses introduces students to topical issues and controversies within specific areas of applied psychology, bringing together current theories and studies from a number of areas within applied psychology through a series of interesting and current debates and controversies. Included in this book are a series of snapshots of how psychologists have tried to apply their findings to real-life problems. Using a clear structure and accessible tone, this book demonstrates how psychological research can be applied to inform current debates across a variety of the field’s subdisciplines. Through examination of both established theoretical ideas and more recent empirical evidence, it enables readers to see how research is linked to practical application in occupational psychology, educational psychology, criminology, sport psychology and environmental psychology. In doing so, it explicates contemporary theories and studies and contributes a cross-cultural understanding of these topics. This book’s wide coverage of topics and theories is designed to enable readers to not only immerse themselves in topical and often controversial debates but also to develop a critical awareness of alternative viewpoints, methodological weaknesses and theoretical shortcomings. Readers are encouraged to consider and question these theories and consider the implications of this research and how the findings can be applied to their own experience. Applied Psychology for Foundation Year is a key textbook for both foundation year and introductory psychology courses and will be of interest to anyone wanting to delve into topical issues in contemporary psychology.

Book Applied Psychology

Download or read book Applied Psychology written by Harold Ernest Burtt and published by . This book was released on 1950 with total page 821 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book is intended for two types of readers: the college student who has had an introductory course in psychology and desires orientation toward the science in its practical aspects, and the layman who is concerned with the general scope of applied psychology and possibly with a particular interest in some limited phase of it. With these readers in mind, a certain degree of compromise is necessary between a very technical text and a popular treatise. The effort has been made to give a scientific treatment of the subject that is reasonably thorough but not heavy and over the head of the general reader. For those who have not taken an introductory course in psychology, the second chapter gives a concise overview of the basic principles which might be obtained in such a course. A balanced emphasis on the different aspects of applied psychology has been attempted, but this may not be evident from a glance at the varying numbers of pages in certain chapters. The difficulty is that many topics, for example, psychological tests, are involved at numerous places in the discussion. The general policy has been to go into detail on a particular topic when it first comes up in the course of the discussion, giving adequate treatment to it there and merely making cross reference later. Thus, later chapters, without such cross references, would perforce be longer. The discussion is moderately documented and supplemented by tabular or graphic material. It is not the intention to support every detailed statement by citing chapter and verse to the extent of slowing down the discussion, but the references included should enable the interested reader to run down most of the original sources from which material was drawn. Statistics is always a problem in a work of this sort. Applied psychology in its actual practice draws heavily on statistics. Ideally, a student or lay reader ought to know something about basic statistics before pursuing applied psychology at all. Naturally, this is not feasible but neither does it seem advisable to devote the initial portion of the book to a deadly overview of statistics. However, a few of the more necessary statistical notions are introduced in the text when they first become pertinent. Enough detail is given, it is hoped, for the reader to pursue the work intelligently whenever those same principles come up again. In some cases where a bit more extensive treatment is desirable, there is supplementary statistical material in the appendix"--Preface. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2007 APA, all rights reserved).

Book Applied Psychology in Everyday Life

Download or read book Applied Psychology in Everyday Life written by Christopher J. L. Cunningham and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2011-07-12 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The practice of psychology involves more than the clinical treatment of mental illness. Although the media may perpetuate the view that all psychologists are healthcare professionals, or specialists who deal with deviant or non-normal behaviors, the majority of psychologists study and practice in diverse areas of human functioning other than clinical psychology. Psychology is the scientific study of human thought and behavior, all human behavior. It is a science with the same rigorous research standards as physics, chemistry, or biology. This book showcases a variety of applications of psychological science in the areas of health, law, sports, business, religion, and money. It is an outgrowth of the River Cities Industrial-Organizational Psychology Conference held at The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, USA, in October 2008. The theme of the 2008 conference was “Applying Psychology to Everyday Life.” We hope the content of this volume enhances your awareness of the importance of applied psychology and that it motivates you to further explore its potential to impact our daily lives.
