Book Applied Isotope Hydrogeology

Download or read book Applied Isotope Hydrogeology written by F.J. Pearson and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1991-04-16 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1980, Nagra, the Swiss National Cooperative for the Storage of Radioactive Waste, began a comprehensive field investigation programme to assess the feasibility and safety of a repository for the final disposal of high-level radioactive waste in northern Switzerland. An international team of scientists has carried out a comprehensive study on the isotope hydrogeology of deep groundwaters. One of the major implications of this work pertains to the storage of radioactive waste. The study goes far beyond an in-depth regional study as it draws together the results of diverse techniques, many of which have been re-evaluated or further developed. This book presents in great detail the results of one of the most comprehensive isotope hydrology studies ever undertaken.

Book Isotope Tracers in Catchment Hydrology

Download or read book Isotope Tracers in Catchment Hydrology written by C. Kendall and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 870 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book represents a new "earth systems" approach to catchments that encompasses the physical and biogeochemical interactions that control the hydrology and biogeochemistry of the system. The text provides a comprehensive treatment of the fundamentals of catchment hydrology, principles of isotope geochemistry, and the isotope variability in the hydrologic cycle -- but the main focus of the book is on case studies in isotope hydrology and isotope geochemistry that explore the applications of isotope techniques for investigating modern environmental problems. Isotope Tracers in Catchment Hydrology is the first synthesis of physical hydrology and isotope geochemistry with catchment focus, and is a valuable reference for professionals and students alike in the fields of hydrology, hydrochemistry, and environmental science. This important interdisciplinary text provides extensive guidelines for the application of isotope techniques for all investigatores facing the challenge of protecting precious water, soil, and ecological resources from the ever-increasing problems associated with population growth and environmental change, including those from urban development and agricultural land uses.

Download or read book Isotope Hydrology written by Joel R. Gat and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2010 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within the discipline of environmental sciences, the stable-isotope methodology is being increasingly used, especially in the study of the water cycle and of paleo-climatology. This book reviews the natural variability of stable isotopes in the hydrosphere, describing the physico-chemical basis of isotope fractionalism, and applying this knowledge to natural waters as they move through the hydrologic cycle from the ocean to the atmosphere, the biosphere and the lithosphere. It focuses on the processes at the surface-atmosphere and land-biosphere-atmosphere interfaces, since these are the sites of major changes in isotope composition. In response to the increasing awareness of our changing climate, a discussion on the global view of the changing water cycle, in the past and future, concludes up the presentation.

Book Atlas of Isotope Hydrology

Download or read book Atlas of Isotope Hydrology written by International Atomic Energy Agency and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the core of all efforts for sustainable human development lies an adequate supply of freshwater. With increasing population numbers and economic growth, it is imperative that we reach a balance between demand and the availability of freshwater, protect available resources in rivers, lakes and aquifers, and prevent disputes over shared resources. Although a significant portion of the Earth's freshwater is renewed by the hydrological cycle, freshwater is still a finite resource and, unlike many other strategic resources, it has no substitute in most of its uses. Nearly half of all freshwater used for drinking and irrigation worldwide is groundwater, on which irrigation and the world's food supply are dependent. Yet, the world's groundwater resources are not well understood. Water resources management and related policy development require widely acceptable scientific information on the hydrology of water bodies. naturally occurring isotopes in water provide unique hydrological information and the associated techniques are highly cost effective. The applications of isotopes in hydrology have from the very beginning been part of the IAEA's programmes related to the peaceful applications of nuclear energy. The focus on the IAEA's work has been to develop appropriate methods for use in water resources management and to assist its Member States in using those methods. The IAEA has helped create a large body of isotope data on the world's rivers, lakes and aquifers that can be used for resource assessment and management on a local, regional and continental scale.

Book Remarkable Applications in Isotope Hydrology

Download or read book Remarkable Applications in Isotope Hydrology written by Samir Anwar Al-Gamal and published by Eliva Press. This book was released on 2021-06-08 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook is intended to confirm the necessity of applying in: Fretwell's Law: by which, Stable isotope data may cause severe and contagious stomach upset if taken alone. To prevent upsetting reviewers' stomachs and your own, take stable isotope data with a healthy dose of other hydrologic, geologic, and geochemical information. Then, you will find stable isotope data very beneficial. The main reason that render the use of the treated isotopic data illegal, incomparable and have thus lost some of its power as an effective tool is in the ignorance of both time and space variation in treating isotopic data. Accordingly, for any quantitative application of the stable isotopes labeling of waters a geo-hydrological tool, it is necessary to establish how well the isotopic composition of a groundwater source is defined in a supposedly homogenous geographic setting. Both time and space variations were not considered in most of isotopic data of major aquifer system.
