Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate novel methods on an unmanned sailing boat, which enables it to sail fully autonomously, navigate safely, and perform long-term missions. Two robotic sailing boats have been developed especially for this purpose. A compact software model of a sailing boat's behaviour allowed for further evaluation of routing and obstacle avoidance methods in a computer simulation. The results of real-world experiments and computer simulations are validated against each other. It has been demonstrated that autonomous boat sailing is possible by the effective combination of appropriate new and novel techniques that will allow autonomous sailing boats to create appropriate routes, to react properly on obstacles and to carry out sailing manoeuvres by controlling rudder and sails. Novel methods for weather routing, collision avoidance, and autonomous manoeuvre execution have been proposed and successfully demonstrated. The combination of these techniques in a layered hybrid subsumption architecture make robotic sailing boats a promising tool for many applications, especially in ocean observation.

Book Robotic Sailing

Download or read book Robotic Sailing written by Alexander Schlaefer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-07-15 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While sailing has a long tradition, both as a means of transportation and as a sport, robotic sailing is a fairly new area of research. One of its unique characteristics is the use of wind for propulsion. On the one hand, this allows for long range and long term autonomy. On the other hand, the dependency on changing winds presents a serious challenge for short and long term planning, collision avoidance, and boat control. Moreover, building a robust and seaworthy sailing robot is no simple task, leading to a truly interdisciplinary engineering problem. These proceedings summarize the state of the art as presented at the International Robotic Sailing Conference 2011. Following an overview of the history of autonomous sailing a number of recent boat designs is presented, ranging from small one-design boats to vessels built to cross the Atlantic Ocean. Subsequently, various aspects of system design and validation are discussed, further highlighting the interdisciplinary nature of the field. Finally, methods for collision avoidance, localization and route planning are covered.

Book Robotic Sailing 2014

Download or read book Robotic Sailing 2014 written by Fearghal Morgan and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-08-01 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An autonomous sailboat robot is a boat that only uses the wind on its sail as the propelling force, without remote control or human assistance to achieve its mission. Robotic sailing offers the potential of long range and long term autonomous wind propelled, solar or wave-powered carbon neutral devices. Robotic sailing devices could contribute to monitoring of environmental, ecological, meteorological, hydrographic and oceanographic data. These devices can also be used in traffic monitoring, border surveillance, security, assistance and rescue. The dependency on changing winds and sea conditions presents a considerable challenge for short and long term route and stability planning, collision avoidance and boat control. Building a robust and seaworthy sailing robot presents a truly complex and multi-disciplinary challenge for boat designers, naval architects, systems/electrical engineers and computer scientists. Over the last decade, several events such as Sailbot, World Robotic Sailing Championship and the International Robotic Sailing Conference (WRSC/IRSC) and Microtransat have sparked an explosion in the number of groups working on autonomous sailing robots. Book Development and Testing of Navigation Algorithms for Autonomous Underwater Vehicles

Download or read book Development and Testing of Navigation Algorithms for Autonomous Underwater Vehicles written by Francesco Fanelli and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-04-16 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on pose estimation algorithms for Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs). After introducing readers to the state of the art, it describes a joint endeavor involving attitude and position estimation, and details the development of a nonlinear attitude observer that employs inertial and magnetic field data and is suitable for underwater use. In turn, it shows how the estimated attitude constitutes an essential type of input for UKF-based position estimators that combine position, depth, and velocity measurements. The book discusses the possibility of including real-time estimates of sea currents in the developed estimators, and highlights simulations that combine real-world navigation data and experimental test campaigns to evaluate the performance of the resulting solutions. In addition to proposing novel algorithms for estimating the attitudes and positions of AUVs using low-cost sensors and taking into account magnetic disturbances and ocean currents, the book provides readers with extensive information and a source of inspiration for the further development and testing of navigation algorithms for AUVs.

Book Traditional Yacht Navigation

Download or read book Traditional Yacht Navigation written by Jeff Toghill and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditional Yacht Navigation combines two of Jeff Toghill's most popular books, Coastal Navigation and Celestial Navigation, making this the essential handbook about small boat navigation. Most small boats are fitted with electronic navigation systems. But electronic gear is notoriously problematic in a damp or wet atmosphere and in the sometimes hazardous environment of a big seaway. Dependence on their accuracy in such conditions can lead to life-threatening situations. With traditional navigation systems using compass and sextant, these problems do not arise so a skilled navigator needs to be familiar with both systems. The book deals with electronic navigation, but covers the basic aspects of the traditional systems in depth. Using numerous charts, diagrams and photographs, Jeff Toghill explains the naval chart, how to use a marine compass and all the details of coastal sailing, including: lights and lighthouses; planning the voyage and plotting the track; understanding winds and currents, tides and streams; the harbour pilotage system and weather and weather forecasting. The complex subject of celestial navigation is made simple enough for even the most non-mathematical sailor, with details on: plotting position by sun, planets and stars; related navigational routines, such as checking the compass by using heavenly objects; taking radio time signals and adjusting the sextant for day-to-day corrections.
