Book Tunnelling and Negative Resistance Phenomena in Semiconductors

Download or read book Tunnelling and Negative Resistance Phenomena in Semiconductors written by D. K. Roy and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-09 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tunnelling and Negative Resistance Phenomena in Semiconductors presents a critical review of tunneling theory and shows how this leads to the negative resistance phenomena in pn junctions. The physics, technology, and circuitry of semiconductor negative resistance devices are surveyed. The book challenges the conventional assumptions of tunneling theory and proposes an alternative approach that allows the possibility of a change in energy during tunneling. It also introduces the reader to the manufacture, operation, and applications of semiconductor negative resistance devices. Comprised of five chapters, this volume begins by presenting a logical physical interpretation of the wavefunction with its so-called ill-behaved nature and considering other consequences of the energy distribution effect. The next chapter is devoted to the tunneling effect through tunnel diodes along with other properties of this device. The circuitry and technology of tunnel diodes as well as backward and Zener diodes are then examined, along with negative conductance devices that are used as microwave sources. The final chapter is concerned with negative conductance switching devices. This book is intended for students and practitioners in the fields of physics and electronics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Designed specifically for undergraduate students of Electronics and Electrical Engineering and its related disciplines, this book offers an excellent coverage of all essential topics and provides a solid foundation for analysing electronic circuits. It covers the course named Electronic Devices and Circuits of various universities. The book will also be useful to diploma students, AMIE students, and those pursuing courses in B.Sc. (Electronics) and M.Sc. (Physics). The students are thoroughly introduced to the full spectrum of fundamental topics beginning with the theory of semiconductors and p-n junction behaviour. The devices treated include diodes, transistors—BJTs, JFETs and MOSFETs—and thyristors. The circuitry covered comprises small signal (ac), power amplifiers, oscillators, and operational amplifiers including many important applications of those versatile devices. A separate chapter on IC fabrication technology is provided to give an idea of the technologies being used in this area. There are a variety of solved examples and applications for conceptual understanding. Problems at the end of each chapter are provided to test, reinforce and enhance learning.

Book CIRCUIT APPLICATION OF TUNNEL DIODES

Download or read book CIRCUIT APPLICATION OF TUNNEL DIODES written by William F. King and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theoretical and experimental studies with tunnel diodes in various configurations are discussed. Small signal applications where noise and stability are of primary concern are considered first. In these applications, dynamic range is not a factor except where it is involved in establishing or ensuring the correct operating point for the circuit. Large signal applications where the static bias conditions are essential to the treatment and operation of the circuit are then considered. Here the signals, bias and dynamic range are of the same order of magnitude. The theory of circuits in which the negative resistance property of the tunnel diode is directly involved in the analytic treatment is discussed. The general areas of success and difficulty are treated and guide lines for future efforts are given. (Author).

Book Tunnel Diode Circuits Coupled Into Transmission Lines

Download or read book Tunnel Diode Circuits Coupled Into Transmission Lines written by Tohru Moto-Oka and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All interconnecting wires should be considered as transmission lines in very high speed circuitry. Consideration is given to two groups of methods which are used in the design of very high speed tunnel diode switching and logic circuits. In the first method it is assumed that all constants are ideal lumped constants and that they are interconnected ideally at first. They are then replaced by distributed circuitry. In the second method tunnel diodes are connected to distributed circuitry from the beginning. In the latter method it may be possible to discover the circuitry in which the characteristic of the distributed circuit is used in our favor. It is impossible to derive this type of circuit from the lumped constant circuit. The character of the tunnel diode circuits coupled into distributed circuits is not understood well enough to design very high speed switching and logic circuits. In this report, typical tunnel diode circuits coupled into transmission lines are investigated as the preparatory stage of latter design methods. Amplifiers, oscillators and switching circuits are considered. (Author).

Book Resonant Tunneling in Semiconductors

Download or read book Resonant Tunneling in Semiconductors written by L.L. Chang and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the proceedings of the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on "Resonant Tunneling in Semiconductors: Physics and Applications", held at Escorial, Spain, on May 14-18, 1990. The tremendous growth in the past two decades in the field of resonant tunneling in semiconductor heterostructures has followed, if not outpaced, the expansion wit nessed in quantum structures in general. Resonant tunneling shares also the multi disciplinary nature of that broad area, with an emphasis on the underlying physics but with a coverage of material systems on the one end and device applications on the other. Indeed, that resonant tunneling provides great flexibility in terms of materials and configurations and that it is inherently a fast process with obvious device impli cations by the presence of a negative differential resistance have contributed to the unrelenting interest in this field. These proceedings consist of 49 refereed articles; they correspond to both invited and contributed talks at the workshop. Because of the intertwinning nature of the subject matter, it has been difficult to subdivide them in well-defined sections. Instead, they are arranged in several broad categories, meant to serve only as guidelines of emphasis on different topics and aspects. The book starts with an introduction to res onant tunneling by providing a perspective of the field in the first article. This is fol lowed by discussions of different material systems with various band-structure effects.

Book Tunnel Diode Circuits Based on Lumped Constant Circuitry

Download or read book Tunnel Diode Circuits Based on Lumped Constant Circuitry written by Tohru Moto-Okra and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Investigation of the speed limit of tunnel diode circuit operation indicates that these circuits should be considered as distributed circuits, because the cut-off frequency of the tunnel diode is more than one thousand megacycles. Methods of obtaining maximum speed tunnel diode circuits may be classified into two groups. One method is that a circuit is designed as a lumped constant circuit originally and, after that, these lumped constant elements are replaced by distributed circuits, if necessary. The other method is that the characteristics of distributed circuitry are used positively and the circuits are designed as distributed circuits from the beginning. The latter method seems to have more difficulties and more possibilities for maximum speed circuits than the former. The former method is used in this report. The linear analysis of resistive networks which include negative resistance elements such as a tunnel diode, are mentioned in Part I. In Part II, the tunnel diode-transistor hybrid logical and switching circuits are mentioned as one example of the application of the theories which are described in Part I. The operating speeds of the hybrid circuits do not seem to be as high as those of all tunnel diode circuits, but they are much more easily designed and more practical in a large digital system.
