This book was released on 2024 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis offers a thorough review of time series forecasting models, starting with simple forecasting methods such as linear models and ending up combining this method with dynamic models to represent interdependencies of the time series dynamics. Decomposition methods such as those from X-11 method to Seasonal and Trend decomposition using Loess (STL) method are applied to increase the prediction accuracy. Book Handbook of Natural Computing

Download or read book Handbook of Natural Computing written by Grzegorz Rozenberg and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-07-09 with total page 2052 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Natural Computing is the field of research that investigates both human-designed computing inspired by nature and computing taking place in nature, i.e., it investigates models and computational techniques inspired by nature and also it investigates phenomena taking place in nature in terms of information processing. Examples of the first strand of research covered by the handbook include neural computation inspired by the functioning of the brain; evolutionary computation inspired by Darwinian evolution of species; cellular automata inspired by intercellular communication; swarm intelligence inspired by the behavior of groups of organisms; artificial immune systems inspired by the natural immune system; artificial life systems inspired by the properties of natural life in general; membrane computing inspired by the compartmentalized ways in which cells process information; and amorphous computing inspired by morphogenesis. Other examples of natural-computing paradigms are molecular computing and quantum computing, where the goal is to replace traditional electronic hardware, e.g., by bioware in molecular computing. In molecular computing, data are encoded as biomolecules and then molecular biology tools are used to transform the data, thus performing computations. In quantum computing, one exploits quantum-mechanical phenomena to perform computations and secure communications more efficiently than classical physics and, hence, traditional hardware allows. The second strand of research covered by the handbook, computation taking place in nature, is represented by investigations into, among others, the computational nature of self-assembly, which lies at the core of nanoscience, the computational nature of developmental processes, the computational nature of biochemical reactions, the computational nature of bacterial communication, the computational nature of brain processes, and the systems biology approach to bionetworks where cellular processes are treated in terms of communication and interaction, and, hence, in terms of computation. We are now witnessing exciting interaction between computer science and the natural sciences. While the natural sciences are rapidly absorbing notions, techniques and methodologies intrinsic to information processing, computer science is adapting and extending its traditional notion of computation, and computational techniques, to account for computation taking place in nature around us. Natural Computing is an important catalyst for this two-way interaction, and this handbook is a major record of this important development.

For efficient processing and analysis of data, there is a strong need for smart data and information modeling techniques (Part III).

Book Seasonal Decomposition for Geographical Time Series Using Nonparametric Regression

Download or read book Seasonal Decomposition for Geographical Time Series Using Nonparametric Regression written by Hyukjun Gweon and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A time series often contains various systematic effects such as trends and seasonality. These different components can be determined and separated by decomposition methods. In this thesis, we discuss time series decomposition process using nonparametric regression. A method based on both loess and harmonic regression is suggested and an optimal model selection method is discussed. We then compare the process with seasonal-trend decomposition by loess STL (Cleveland, 1979). While STL works well when that proper parameters are used, the method we introduce is also competitive: it makes parameter choice more automatic and less complex. The decomposition process often requires that time series be evenly spaced; any missing value is therefore necessarily estimated. For time series with seasonality, it is preferable to use the seasonal information to estimate missing observations. The seasonal adjustment algorithm (McLeod et al., 1983) can be used for monthly time series. In this thesis, we examine the algorithm and revise it to cover daily data cases.

Book A Combined Parametric and Nonparametric Approach to Time Series Analysis

Download or read book A Combined Parametric and Nonparametric Approach to Time Series Analysis written by Stefan Kriebol and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The analysis and prediction of natural phenomena is an interesting and challenging task. Time series obtained from the observation of one or more features of a phenomenon are often the only access to the data generating system. Unfortunately, time series analysis is usually done by specialists in the field of the phenomenon with traditional analysis techniques. The application of modern analysis and prediction tools is often avoided due to their complexity or the risk of failure. This issue can be surmounted by an interdisciplinary approach. This work is an example for the possible synergetic effect of interdisciplinary research. In the field of oceanography the coastal upwelling phenomenon is analysed in experimental studies with a numerical model in order to develop a parametric prediction model. Artificial neural networks seem to be a suitable parametric model. However, in the field of computer science traditional artificial neural techniques showed limitations in the analysis and prediction of time series obtained from natural phenomena, particularly with nonlinear and nonstationary time series. Motivated by this limitations a new approach to time series analysis and prediction is presented in this work, the mixture of nonparametric segmented experts (MONSE). The MONSE approach is exploiting the synergetic effect of a combined nonparametric and parametric analysis. It is supposed to be applied to explorative time series analysis and prediction in various fields, i.e. in a context where hardly any kowledge about the time series of concern is available.
