Book Analytical Methods in Geochemical Prospecting

Download or read book Analytical Methods in Geochemical Prospecting written by W.K. Fletcher and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Handbook of Exploration Geochemistry, Volume I: Analytical Methods in Geochemical Prospecting focuses on the principles, methodologies, approaches, and techniques employed in geochemical prospecting. The book first underscores quality control in the laboratory, sample preparation, sample decomposition-solution techniques, and colorimetry and related techniques. Discussions focus on colorimetry, turbidimetric methods, strong decompositions, partial extractions, preparation of rock samples, random and systematic errors, and quality control program. The publication then takes a look at atomic absorption spectrophotometry, emission spectroscopy, and X-ray fluorescence. Concerns cover instrumentation, operation of the X-ray fluorescence spectrometer, flame emission spectroscopy, semi-quantitative DC-arc spectroscopy, and plasma sources. The text examines electrochemical methods, including determination of pH and specific ion electrodes. The publication is a dependable reference for researchers interested in the analytical methods in geochemical prospecting.

Book Use Of Different Gold Amalgamation Techniques In Mercury Determination By Cold Vapor Atomic Absorption Spectrometry

Download or read book Use Of Different Gold Amalgamation Techniques In Mercury Determination By Cold Vapor Atomic Absorption Spectrometry written by Arzu Erdem and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A novel amalgamation/cold vapor atomic absorption spectrometric system was developed for the determination of Hg(II) concentration in water samples. In the next part, an amalgamation unit utilizing various Au-coated sorbents was constructed and tested in the determination of mercury. Among the new amalgamation materials suggested, gold-coated quartz wool was found to be the most efficient although gold sputter-coated carbon fiber gave also very promising results. Analytical performance of the CVAAS system in terms of sample volume, limit of detection, and without/with amalgamation was also investigated. It was observed that the mercury signal increased with increasing sample volume, as expected. On the other hand, provided that the absolute amount of Hg(II) was kept constant while changing the sample volume, use of amalgamation unit resulted in similar calibration sensitivities. With amalgamation, the linearity and the slope of the calibration plots were not dependant on the sample volume and this property is expected to offer an important advantage since it makes the volume adjustment unnecessary. The limit of detection was also improved with amalgamation. The highest improvement was obtained with 2.0 ml sample volume; the limit of detection was 3.5 times lower (3.5 times better) than that of without amalgamation when 5-times trapping was employed. The results demonstrated that the methodology can be applied to these types of samples directly or after amalgamation, depending on Hg(II) concentration.

Book Applications of Atomic Spectrometry to Regulatory Compliance Monitoring

Download or read book Applications of Atomic Spectrometry to Regulatory Compliance Monitoring written by Stephen W. Jenniss and published by Wiley-VCH. This book was released on 1997-09 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A complete guide to regulatory compliance monitoring using atomic spectrometry This is the only comprehensive, single-volume guide to all methods of atomic spectrometry currently recognized by regulatory agencies for the monitoring of metallic contaminants. It is an indispensable working resource for analytical chemists and spectroscopists responsible for generating scientifically and legally defensible laboratory results for regulatory compliance. The book answers virtually every question regarding material selection, preparation, preservation, analysis, and the testing equipment itself. It begins with a thorough explication of the three major spectrometric methods: atomic absorption, inductively coupled plasma atomic spectrometry, and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Each method is described in terms of its scope of sensitivity, theoretical principles, material and equipment requirements, interferences and their corrections, and calibration. Following chapters provide detailed accounts of sample collection, preservation, and preparation; concentration and separation methods; and laboratory analysis methods for compliance monitoring of air, water, wastes, animal tissues, and food. The authors also provide helpful hints and guidelines on how to organize a laboratory; plan projects; report results; communicate with clients, regulators, and the public; market services; and more.
