Download or read book Ground Penetrating Radar for Evaluating Subsurface Conditions for Transportation Facilities written by Rexford M. Morey and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 1998 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis will be of interest to state Department of Transportation (DOT) geotechnical, bridge, and pavement engineers, engineering geologists, consultants involved with ground penetrating radar (GPR) investigations for state DOTs, and researchers. It describes the current state of the practice of using GPR for evaluating subsurface conditions for transportation facilities. This was accomplished by conducting a literature search and review and an extensive survey of U.S. and Canadian transportation agencies and practitioners, as well as limited international information collection. GPR is a noninvasive nondestructive tool used in transportation applications such as evaluation and characterization of pavement systems, soils, and environmental problems. This report of the Transportation Research Board presents information on the principles, equipment, logistics, applications, and limitations of GPR pertaining to transportation applications. Selected case studies for which ground truth information is available are presented. In addition, an extensive bibliography and glossary are provided as well as appending information about GPR manufacturers from their literature.

Book Ground Penetrating Radar Applications on Roads and Highways

Download or read book Ground Penetrating Radar Applications on Roads and Highways written by Timo Saarenketo and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report will describe the various kinds of information that can be obtained from roads and highways with Ground Penetrating Radar. In the last 5 years, attention has focused on measuring the thickness of the asphalt surfacing layer on flexible pavements with air-launched horn antennas. Other antennas are available with substantially different depths of penetration, and for use in a wide range of other pavement applications. The purpose of this report is to describe the range of applications of GPR in pavement evaluation. Cases include subgrade investigations, bedrock evaluations, locating sinkholes, detecting frost damage, and identifying defects such as stripping or voids and monitoring crack growth within the pavement structure. The large variety of cases, conducted in Texas and Finland, illustrates the unique ability of GPR to rapidly evaluate subsurface conditions. The sinkhole detection study represents our initial effort to use low frequency deep penetrating radar on Texas pavements. A unique feature of this paper is the proposed classification of the frost susceptibility of subgrade soils by their measured dielectric constant and electrical conductivity.

Book Ground Penetrating Radar GPR Analysis

Download or read book Ground Penetrating Radar GPR Analysis written by and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this work is to evaluate the feasibility of expanding the MDT Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) program to a broader range of pavement evaluation activities. Currently, MDT uses GPR in conjunction with its Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) data collection program to provide layer thickness data for backcalculation. This program has included a review of literature and software dealing with pavement applications of GPR, a survey of state highway agency (SHA) use of GPR for pavement applications, a review of MDT's GPR program, and a review of MDT's pavement structures, environment, and pavement management and rehabilitation practices. A detailed review of 47 documented studies shows that GPR pavement thickness measurements typically fall within 2 to 10 percent of core values for the bound layers. Most of these studies have used a 1.0 GHz horn antenna (vs. the 2.0 GHz antenna currently used by MDT). Accuracy of unbound material is less precisely documented. The survey of SHA GPR practice supports the application of GPR for pavement thickness measurements; some agencies use GPR on a regular basis, while others use GPR on a project-specific basis. The application of GPR for measuring pavement network is 97 percent AC, with mostly aggregate base but some areas with cement-treated base, and maintenance is typically carried out using chip seals. Based on an evaluation of MDT's rehabilitation and reconstruction practices, it appears that the GPR program can be expanded to provide useful information for the following applications: (a) calculation of structural number for pavement reconstruction and rehabilitation design; (b) insuring proper depth control for mill and fill rehabilitation and cold-in-place recycling; (c) improved structural capacity calculation for network level evaluation; and (d) quality assurance of new pavement thickness and density. In order to investigate the feasibility and value of these program expansions, it is recommended that a field evaluation project be designed and implemented to evaluate the accuracy of GPR pavement thickness (and density) data on Montana pavements, and to correlate these findings with the accuracy requirements of the individual applications.

Book Implementation of Ground Penetrating Radar

Download or read book Implementation of Ground Penetrating Radar written by Yuejian Cao and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this project was to demonstrate the capabilities and limitations of ground penetrating radar (GPR) for use in local road applications. The effectiveness of a GPR survey is a function of site conditions, the equipment used, and experience of personnel interpreting the results. In addition, not all site conditions are appropriate for GPR applications. GPR is a nondestructive field test that can provide a continuous profile of existing road conditions. GPR utilizes high-speed data collection at speeds up to 50 mph, thus requiring less traffic control and resulting in greater safety. GPR has the potential to be used for a variety of pavement applications, including measuring the thickness of asphalt pavement, base and sub-grade; assisting in the analysis of rutting mechanisms; calculating and verifying material properties; locating subsurface objects; detecting stripping and/or layer separation; detecting subsurface moisture; and determining depth to near-surface bedrock and peat deposits. These applications are discussed in reference to 22 projects completed throughout the State of Minnesota.

Book Use of Ground Penetrating Radar to Evaluate Minnesota Roads

Download or read book Use of Ground Penetrating Radar to Evaluate Minnesota Roads written by Marc C. Loken and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Minnesota Local Road Research Board (LRRB) funded a project to evaluate the usefulness of ground-penetrating radar (GPR) in evaluating Minnesota roads. A literature search was first performed to review the applications of ground-penetrating radar (GPR) to highway applications. These applications include calculating layer thickness, estimating asphalt density, determining aggregate base moisture content, identifying stripping within asphalt layers, detecting air voids and vertical cracks, identifying subsurface anomalies, and analyzing rutting mechanisms. The relative accuracy of using GPR as opposed to traditional field tests was assessed. A simple laboratory calibration was performed to estimate the thickness of a concrete slab to within 10%. Finally, a sensitivity study was performed to determine the dependence of various output parameters (minimum layer thickness, maximum depth of penetration, horizontal resolution, reflection coefficients, layer thickness, and air void thickness) on input parameters (antenna frequency and dielectric constant). GPR was successful in identifying total asphalt thickness on CSAH 61 in Pine County, and moderately successful in determining base thickness and identifying the underlying, original concrete roadway in select locations. The surveys were not successful in differentiating asphalt course thicknesses. The surveys also identified potential regions of stripping. GPR was not successful in locating near-surface bedrock or peat deposits on CSAH 48 in St. Louis County, because of the presence of a geo-textile membrane.

Book Application of Ground Penetrating Radar to Locate Subsurface Voids in Urban Areas

Download or read book Application of Ground Penetrating Radar to Locate Subsurface Voids in Urban Areas written by Zhiyong Zhao and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As traffic volumes grow and pavements age, city streets in urban areas are vulnerable to the potentially dangerous problems such as subsurface voids. These subsurface voids can significantly reduce the bearing strength of pavements and eventually result in the collapse of city streets. Several nondestructive testing (NDT) methods have been studied to detect subsurface voids during the past two decades. However, these studies mainly focused on detecting small voids close to the surface of the highway pavements. As far as urban area is concerned, few studies have been conducted to evaluate the capacities of NDT methods to locate subsurface voids. Moreover, congested and complex subsurface circumstance makes it more challenging to evaluate subsurface conditions.
