Book Remote Health Monitoring of Gas Turbines

Download or read book Remote Health Monitoring of Gas Turbines written by Cody Allen and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation is a repository of techniques employed in the health management of industrial gas turbines. The first chapters cover methods of diagnostics using statistics and machine learning algorithms to identify deviations from normal operation. The middle chapters cover applications of prognostics in the sense of generating predictions of various sensor values of interest and comparing predictions with observed values through residual analysis. The later chapters develop applications of optimization techniques to the estimation of compressor degradation rates and to the creation of optimized maintenance schedules. The final chapter takes a more scrutinizing look at the mathematics of estimating piecewise linear functions and proves a result about minimal cardinality. Taken in whole, this work covers a broad spectrum from applications to theory of remote health management of Gas Turbines, and generally, rotating machines.

Book excerpt: Widely used for power generation, gas turbine engines are susceptible to faults due to the harsh working environment. Most engine problems are preceded by a sharp change in measurement deviations compared to a baseline engine, but the trend data of these deviations over time are contaminated with noise and non-Gaussian outliers. Gas Turbine Diagnostics: Signal Processing and Fault Isolation presents signal processing algorithms to improve fault diagnosis in gas turbine engines, particularly jet engines. The algorithms focus on removing noise and outliers while keeping the key signal features that may indicate a fault. The book brings together recent methods in data filtering, trend shift detection, and fault isolation, including several novel approaches proposed by the author. Each method is demonstrated through numerical simulations that can be easily performed by the reader. Coverage includes: Filters for gas turbines with slow data availability Hybrid filters for engines equipped with faster data monitoring systems Nonlinear myriad filters for cases where monitoring of transient data can lead to better fault detection Innovative nonlinear filters for data cleaning developed using optimization methods An edge detector based on gradient and Laplacian calculations A process of automating fault isolation using a bank of Kalman filters, fuzzy logic systems, neural networks, and genetic fuzzy systems when an engine model is available An example of vibration-based diagnostics for turbine blades to complement the performance-based methods Using simple examples, the book describes new research tools to more effectively isolate faults in gas turbine engines. These algorithms may also be useful for condition and health monitoring in other systems where sharp changes in measurement data indicate the onset of a fault.

Book A Hybrid Neural Network Genetic Algorithm Technique for Aircraft Engine Performance Diagnostics

Download or read book A Hybrid Neural Network Genetic Algorithm Technique for Aircraft Engine Performance Diagnostics written by Takahisa Kobayashi and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper, a model-based diagnostic method, which utilizes Neural Networks and Genetic Algorithms, is investigated. Neural networks are applied to estimate the engine internal health, and Genetic Algorithms are applied for sensor bias detection and estimation. This hybrid approach takes advantage of the nonlinear estimation capability provided by neural networks while improving the robustness to measurement uncertainty through the application of Genetic Algorithms. The hybrid diagnostic technique also has the ability to rank multiple potential solutions for a given set of anomalous sensor measurements in order to reduce false alarms and missed detections. The performance of the hybrid diagnostic technique is evaluated through some case studies derived from a turbofan engine simulation. The results show this approach is promising for reliable diagnostics of aircraft engines.

Book An Evaluation of the Potential for Expert System Application to Marine Gas Turbine Control

Download or read book An Evaluation of the Potential for Expert System Application to Marine Gas Turbine Control written by and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current shipboard gas turbine environments are in need of updating to reduce stressful, inadequate conditions on operators, and to provide improved casualty monitoring procedures for increased equipment longevity and reduced operating costs. These necessary improvements may be realized through a marine gas turbine health monitoring system capable of taking corrective control measures. Adequate technology exists today for such a system, as evidenced by two similar gas turbine diagnostic expert systems currently being tested by the Army and Air Force. Expert system tools such as CLIPS would significantly reduce the time, cost and integration difficulties in establishing a marine gas turbine expert system. This paper is an overview of published literature on Expert Systems and their current applications, with an evaluation of their potential for use in the marine gas turbine arena. Keywords: Marine gas turbine, Diagnostics, Expert systems. (JES).

Book The Optimisation of the Usage of Gas Turbine Generation Sets for Oil and Gas Production Using Genetic Algorithms

Download or read book The Optimisation of the Usage of Gas Turbine Generation Sets for Oil and Gas Production Using Genetic Algorithms written by Houssein Ben Hariz and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The privatisations of the energy supply industries world-wide has meant that emphasis is now on how to profitably compete. In this environment the development of effective models for optimisation of power plant are of increasing importance, particularly operational strategies for off-design conditions, and particularly for gas turbine engines. Maximisation of plant profitability necessitates proper and integrated evaluation of many factors, the most important of which are: availability and price of fuel, system efficiency and performance, life cycle costing of plant and machinery, present and future generation of revenue, likely future market dynamics. A major contribution of this work is the application of the proposed method to simultaneously maximise both total profit and usage availability of a typical combination of gas turbines engines used for power generation in oil and gas production. The method allows the user, for example, the opportunity to select locally appropriate daily and seasonal power demands and ambient conditions. Through a genetic algorithm optimisation technique, an additional powerful feature of the method is that it allows the user to choose an optimised operating combination of their existing gas turbine equipment. Both individual engine power setting and number of engines can be varied. Alternatively, the user can apply the code to select the best combination of new and/or replacement equipment to achieve best economic performance and highest availability. The number of variables involved in the optimisation process is, of course, very large. It is, therefore, difficult to find the optimal configuration. To address this problem, the first phase of this study is limited to the analysis of the performance of industrial gas turbine engines. The primary aim is to identify the key parameters in the determination of off-design performance. The second aim for the first phase is to identify those tasks suitable for automation. The Gas Turbine Library (Turbomatch) developed at Cranfield University includes simulation codes for many different industrial gas turbines and processes. The optimiser developed as part of this research has been linked with that library. The second phase of this project is to develop an economic model for gas turbines analysing off-design performance. The model includes a life cycle cost assessment including: capital cost, maintenance and operating costs, fuel cost, emission and other taxes and disposal cost. By including total revenue it has been possible to develop a model that allows maximisation of total profit under variable operating conditions. The third phase of the project presents an automated optimisation tool based on a listing of the Turbomatch simulation code and a genetic algorithm technique. The tool uses an evaluation of the fitness value of the objective function and takes into account the optimisation constraints. Two case studies considered where real data obtained from oil field in Libya are used to illustrate the use of the new code to maximising the profit.
