Book Application of the Precautionary Approach and Conservation Reference Point to the Management of Atlantic Seals

Download or read book Application of the Precautionary Approach and Conservation Reference Point to the Management of Atlantic Seals written by Mike O. Hammill and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The precautionary approach (PA) brings scientists, resource managers and stakeholders together to identify clear management objectives and to establish specific benchmark or reference levels in order to enable the status of the resource to be evaluated and to identify specific management actions that would be triggered when a population level approaches or falls below the benchmark level. The PA also recognizes that the amount of information concerning the status of a resource may vary and that a lack of information is not sufficient to delay taking a management decision. This document presents a conceptual framework for applying the PA to Atlantic seal management. For data-rich species, two precautionary levels & a conservation reference level are proposed. For data-poor species such as hooded & grey seals, which require a more risk-adverse approach to their management, an approach using a level called the potential biological removal is described.

Book Recasting Transboundary Fisheries Management Arrangements in Light of Sustainability Principles

Download or read book Recasting Transboundary Fisheries Management Arrangements in Light of Sustainability Principles written by Dawn A. Russell and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2010-10-25 with total page 573 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The management of transboundary fish stocks might be described as a complex mosaic. Multiple fora are trying to incrementally shift the fisheries management course towards a sustainable future. Recasting Transboundary Fisheries Management Arrangements in Light of Sustainability Principles reviews and critiques key recasting efforts with a primary focus on Canada’s transboundary fisheries management arrangements for the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. It provides a primer on the international law and policy framework governing transboundary fisheries and offers bilateral and regional case studies in the search for more principled fisheries governance approaches based on the new sustainability imperatives. This book offers current Canadian and international perspectives on the challenges facing regional fisheries management organizations, as well as bilateral and national arrangements, as they face the tides of sustainability reform. Struggles to implement precautionary and ecosystem approaches are especially highlighted.

Book The Precautionary Principle in Biodiversity Conservation and Natural Resource Management

Download or read book The Precautionary Principle in Biodiversity Conservation and Natural Resource Management written by Rosie Cooney and published by IUCN. This book was released on 2004 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The precautionary principle, or precautionary approach, is now widely accepted in environmental law and policy at international and, increasingly, national level. However, the principle remains highly controversial, its meaning contested, its acceptance and implementation inconsistent across sectors and contexts and its impacts unclear. This paper aims to inform and assist IUCN and its members in developing greater shared understanding of the meaning and implementation of the principle in the context of biodiversity conservation and natural resource management, respecting priorities of both conservation and sustainable development. It examines the meaning of the precautionary principle and its incorporation into biodiversity and resource management law and policy, and discusses a series of issues raised by its implementation in this sector for biodiversity conservation and for livelihoods and poverty alleviation.

Book Ecosystem Based Fisheries Management

Download or read book Ecosystem Based Fisheries Management written by Jason Link and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-10-07 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Responsible fisheries management is of increasing interest to the scientific community, resource managers, policy makers, stakeholders and the general public. Focusing solely on managing one species of fish stock at a time has become less of a viable option in addressing the problem. Incorporating more holistic considerations into fisheries management by addressing the trade-offs among the range of issues involved, such as ecological principles, legal mandates and the interests of stakeholders, will hopefully challenge and shift the perception that doing ecosystem-based fisheries management is unfeasible. Demonstrating that EBFM is in fact feasible will have widespread impact, both in US and international waters. Using case studies, underlying philosophies and analytical approaches, this book brings together a range of interdisciplinary topics surrounding EBFM and considers these simultaneously, with an aim to provide tools for successful implementation and to further the debate on EBFM, ultimately hoping to foster enhanced living marine resource management.

Book Biodiversity and the Precautionary Principle

Download or read book Biodiversity and the Precautionary Principle written by Rosie Cooney and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-05-16 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Great uncertainty typically surrounds decisions and management actions in the conservation of biodiversity and natural resource management, and yet there are risks of serious and irreversible harm for both biodiversity and the humans that rely on it. The precautionary principle arguably underlies all international conservation efforts and promotes acting to avoid serious or irreversible environmental harm, despite lack of scientific certainty as to the likelihood, magnitude or cause of harm. This book is the first to examine the application of the precautionary principle to biodiversity conservation and natural resource management, incorporating perspectives from scientists, economists, lawyers and practitioners from both developing and developed countries. It analyses the application and impacts of the principle in many areas including forestry, invasive alien species, wildlife trade, protected areas and fisheries, in a range of national and international contexts. Particular attention is drawn to issues of equity, livelihoods, science and politics, and the book provides guidelines for applying the precautionary principle to biodiversity conservation and natural resource management.

Book Evolution and Status of the Precautionary Principle in International Law

Download or read book Evolution and Status of the Precautionary Principle in International Law written by Arie Trouwborst and published by Springer. This book was released on 2002-02-27 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The controversial question of whether or not at present the precautionary principle is to be considered a norm of customary international law is the key theme of this work, which treats the issue as part of a broader discussion of the principle's legal status on the international plane. This discussion, In turn, Is put in perspective by an account of the short but remarkable history of the principle in international environmental law and policy. The greater part of this study consists of the mapping and analysis of state practice in respect of the precautionary principle. Pertinent treaties, declarations, decisions of international organizations and domestic instruments pass in review. The book then applies the generally accepted principles governing the formation of customary international law to this body of state practice. This manuscript was awarded the François Prize 2001 by the Netherlands Society of International Law / Netherlands Branch of the ILA. `[The precautionary principle] has been cited in an increasing number of legal proceedings, including those in the International Court of Justice, The International Tribunal For The Law of the Sea And The WTO Appellate Body, As well as in the courts of a large number of states, including the supreme courts of India and Canada.' (from the Preface by the Series Editors)

Book The Precautionary Principle in the 20th Century

Download or read book The Precautionary Principle in the 20th Century written by Paul Harremoes and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-11 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The precautionary principle is widely seen as fundamental to successful policies for sustainability. It has been cited in international courts and trade disputes between the USA and the EU, and invoked in a growing range of political debates. Understanding what it can and cannot achieve is therefore crucial. This volume looks back over the last century to examine the role the principle played or could have played, in a range of major and avoidable public disasters. From detailed investigation of how each disaster unfolded, what the impacts were and what measures were adopted, the authors draw lessons and establish criteria that could help to minimise the health and environmental risks of future technological, economic and policy innovations. This is an informative resource for all those from lawyers and policy-makers, to researchers and students needing to understand or apply the principle.
