Book excerpt: The fictitious scattering radiation transport model, suitable for Monte Carlo applications in geometrically complex systems, has been extended for use in deep-penetration calculations by the development of an appropriate next-flight estimator. Mathematical derivations are given, and it is shown that the estimation scheme is actually a one-dimensional version of the general model. Sample problems are solved to illustrate the use of the next-flight estimator, its variance characteristics, and the time-saving features of the model. Other items discussed are coupling techniques with standard methods, systems with large cross sections, and inclusion of the fictitious scattering model in multigroup cross-section structure.

Book excerpt: The mathematical technique of Monte Carlo, as applied to the transport of sub-atomic particles, has been described in numerous reports and books since its formal development in the 1940s. Most of these instructional efforts have been directed either at the mathematical basis of the technique or at its practical application as embodied in the several large, formal computer codes available for performing Monte Carlo transport calculations. This book attempts to fill what appears to be a gap in this Monte Carlo literature between the mathematics and the software. Thus, while the mathematical basis for Monte Carlo transport is covered in some detail, emphasis is placed on the application of the technique to the solution of practical radiation transport problems. This is done by using the PC as the basic teaching tool. This book assumes the reader has a knowledge of integral calculus, neutron transport theory, and Fortran programming. It also assumes the reader has available a PC with a Fortran compiler. Any PC of reasonable size should be adequate to reproduce the examples or solve the exercises contained herein. The authors believe it is important for the reader to execute these examples and exercises, and by doing so to become accomplished at preparing appropriate software for solving radiation transport problems using Monte Carlo. The step from the software described in this book to the use of production Monte Carlo codes should be straightforward.

The countries represented at the School were: Brazil, Canada, Federal Republic of Germany, Finland, German Democratic Republic, Hungary, India, Italy, Japan, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United States of America, and Yugoslavia. The School was officially sponsored by the Italian Health Physics Association, the Italian Ministry of Public Education, the Italian Ministry of Scientific and Technological Research, and the Sicilian Regional Government. In addition, administrative and tech nical support was received from the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center and from CERN. The past 15 or so years have witnessed a significant develop ment of computer methods in the science of radiation protection. The radiation transport codes associated with hadronic and electro magnetic cascades, reactor shielding, unfolding techniques, and gamma ray spectrum analysis have reached the state-of-the-art level, and the Erice Course aimed at presenting as comprehensive an over view of these programs as was possible within the allotted time span.
