Book Application of Rayleigh Scattering to Turbulent Flow with Heat Transfer and Combustion

Download or read book Application of Rayleigh Scattering to Turbulent Flow with Heat Transfer and Combustion written by L. Talbot and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies of premixed turbulent V-shaped flames have been carried out using two-point Rayleigh scattering. Density fluctuation intensities, two point density covariances, and mean density profiles were found to be in good agreement with a wrinkled laminar flame model which is an extension of the Bray Moss Libby model. The probability density function for the location of the flame sheet within the turbulent flame brush was measured and found to be approximately gaussian. Mean density profiles of the turbulent flame brush were found to have a self similar behavior when scaled with the maximum slope thickness. A new optical system was developed to make time resolved Rayleigh scattering measurements along a length of a laser beam, thus extending the two point technique to a multipoint one. Keywords: Premixed turbulent flame structure; Rayleigh scattering.

Book Applications of Rayleigh Scattering to Turbulent Flows with Heat Transfer and Combustion

Download or read book Applications of Rayleigh Scattering to Turbulent Flows with Heat Transfer and Combustion written by L. Talbot and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rayleigh scattering has been developed as a diagnostic tool and used in conjunction with Laser Doppler velocimetry to study two reacting flows; the interaction of a Karman vortex street with a flame, and the interaction of grid-produced turbulence with a flame. Vortex street interaction is characterized by radical distortion of the flame front. Dilatation effects downstream of the flame front dominate, and vortices are not discernible in this region. Numerical modeling gave qualitative agreement with the experimental results. For the grid-induced turbulence, the measured density and velocity statistics were compared with the predictions of the Bray-Moss-Libby model. It was found that intermediate states had to be taken into account. Two-point density correlation measurements, the first ever reported, showed that the length scales of turbulence within the reaction zone were the same in all three orthogonal directions. Space-time correlation measurements in the flow direction were in accord with the Taylor hypothesis. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Turbulent reactive flows are of common occurrance in combustion engineering, chemical reactor technology and various types of engines producing power and thrust utilizing chemical and nuclear fuels. Pollutant formation and dispersion in the atmospheric environment and in rivers, lakes and ocean also involve interactions between turbulence, chemical reactivity and heat and mass transfer processes. Considerable advances have occurred over the past twenty years in the understanding, analysis, measurement, prediction and control of turbulent reactive flows. Two main contributors to such advances are improvements in instrumentation and spectacular growth in computation: hardware, sciences and skills and data processing software, each leading to developments in others. Turbulence presents several features that are situation-specific. Both for that reason and a number of others, it is yet difficult to visualize a so-called solution of the turbulence problem or even a generalized approach to the problem. It appears that recognition of patterns and structures in turbulent flow and their study based on considerations of stability, interactions, chaos and fractal character may be opening up an avenue of research that may be leading to a generalized approach to classification and analysis and, possibly, prediction of specific processes in the flowfield. Predictions for engineering use, on the other hand, can be foreseen for sometime to come to depend upon modeling of selected features of turbulence at various levels of sophistication dictated by perceived need and available capability.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book consists of papers prepared for and presented at a NATO sponsored Advanced Study Institute which was held in Montechoro, Portugal during the period 16-27 April, 1990. This Institute was attended by approximately ninety delegates from fifteen countries and followed from a related Institute held in Vimeiro, Portugal in 1987 (see the book entitled "Instrumentation for Combustion and Flow in Engines", edited by D. F. G. Dur~o, J. H. Whitelaw and P. O. Witzel. The purposes of the first Institute related closely to instrumentation for use in gas-turbine combustors and the cylinders of internal-combustion engines. These topics were also addressed in the second Institute, though in a manner which was wider ranging and chosen to demonstrate and explain the development and application of measurement methods to combusting flows in general. The papers contained in this boo~ were selected to provide the reader with a comprehensive and up-to-date view of the variety of experimental techniques available to measure in combusting flows. Included are discussions of their range and applicability, potential accuracy and ease of use. Thus, the first paper provides a brief overview and the second an indication of those aspects of combustion which should influence the choice of flow property to be measured and the technique to be used.

Book Radiative Heat Transfer in Turbulent Combustion Systems

Download or read book Radiative Heat Transfer in Turbulent Combustion Systems written by Michael F. Modest and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-01-06 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This introduction reviews why combustion and radiation are important, as well as the technical challenges posed by radiation. Emphasis is on interactions among turbulence, chemistry and radiation (turbulence-chemistry-radiation interactions – TCRI) in Reynolds-averaged and large-eddy simulations. Subsequent chapters cover: chemically reacting turbulent flows; radiation properties, Reynolds transport equation (RTE) solution methods, and TCRI; radiation effects in laminar flames; TCRI in turbulent flames; and high-pressure combustion systems. This Brief presents integrated approach that includes radiation at the outset, rather than as an afterthought. It stands as the most recent developments in physical modeling, numerical algorithms, and applications collected in one monograph.

Book IUTAM Symposium on Variable Density Low Speed Turbulent Flows

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The General Assembly of the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics in its meeting on August 28, 1994, selected for 1996 only four Mechanics Symposia, of which ours is the only one related to Fluid Mechanics: Variable Density Low Speed Turbulent Flows. This IUTAM Symposium, organized by the Institut de Recherche sur les Phenomenes Hors Equilibre (Marseille), is the logical continuation of the meetings previously organized or co-organized - on the French or European level, such as Euromech 237, Marseille, 1988 - by the same research group ofMarseille. This meeting focused specifically on the structure of turbulent flows in which density varies strongly : the effect of this variation on the velocity and scalar fields is in no sense negligible. We were mainly concerned with low-speed flows subjected to strong local changes of density as a consequence of heat or mass transfer or of chemical reactions. Compressible turbulent flows - such a!" supersonic ones - were also considered in order to underline their similarities to and their differences from low-speed variable density flows.

Book Turbulence Modelling Approaches

Download or read book Turbulence Modelling Approaches written by Konstantin Volkov and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2017-07-26 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Accurate prediction of turbulent flows remains a challenging task despite considerable work in this area and the acceptance of CFD as a design tool. The quality of the CFD calculations of the flows in engineering applications strongly depends on the proper prediction of turbulence phenomena. Investigations of flow instability, heat transfer, skin friction, secondary flows, flow separation, and reattachment effects demand a reliable modelling and simulation of the turbulence, reliable methods, accurate programming, and robust working practices. The current scientific status of simulation of turbulent flows as well as some advances in computational techniques and practical applications of turbulence research is reviewed and considered in the book.
