Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Turbulent reactive flows are of common occurrance in combustion engineering, chemical reactor technology and various types of engines producing power and thrust utilizing chemical and nuclear fuels. Pollutant formation and dispersion in the atmospheric environment and in rivers, lakes and ocean also involve interactions between turbulence, chemical reactivity and heat and mass transfer processes. Considerable advances have occurred over the past twenty years in the understanding, analysis, measurement, prediction and control of turbulent reactive flows. Two main contributors to such advances are improvements in instrumentation and spectacular growth in computation: hardware, sciences and skills and data processing software, each leading to developments in others. Turbulence presents several features that are situation-specific. Both for that reason and a number of others, it is yet difficult to visualize a so-called solution of the turbulence problem or even a generalized approach to the problem. It appears that recognition of patterns and structures in turbulent flow and their study based on considerations of stability, interactions, chaos and fractal character may be opening up an avenue of research that may be leading to a generalized approach to classification and analysis and, possibly, prediction of specific processes in the flowfield. Predictions for engineering use, on the other hand, can be foreseen for sometime to come to depend upon modeling of selected features of turbulence at various levels of sophistication dictated by perceived need and available capability.

Book A Three dimensional Direct Simulation Monte Carlo Methodology on Unstructured Delaunay Grids with Applications to Micro and Nanoflows

Download or read book A Three dimensional Direct Simulation Monte Carlo Methodology on Unstructured Delaunay Grids with Applications to Micro and Nanoflows written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract (Partial): The focus of this work is to present in detail the implementation of a three dimensional direct simulation Monte Carlo methodology on unstructured Delaunay meshes (U-DSMC). The validation and verification of the implementation are shown using a series of fundamental flow cases. The numerical error associated with the implementation is also studied using a fundamental flow configuration. The effect of scale on the statistical fluctuation of the U-DSMC data is studied using Poiseuille flow. The error in the predicted velocity profile is calculated with respect to both first and second-order slip formulations. Simulations are carried out for a range of channel heights and the error between the U-DSMC predictions and theory are calculated for each case. From this error, a functional dependence is shown between the scale-induced statistical fluctuations and the decreasing channel height.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, the authors present the elements of a general theory for flows on three-dimensional compact boundaryless manifolds, encompassing flows with equilibria accumulated by regular orbits. The book aims to provide a global perspective of this theory and make it easier for the reader to digest the growing literature on this subject. This is not the first book on the subject of dynamical systems, but there are distinct aspects which together make this book unique. Firstly, this book treats mostly continuous time dynamical systems, instead of its discrete counterpart, exhaustively treated in some other texts. Secondly, this book treats all the subjects from a mathematical perspective with proofs of most of the results included. Thirdly, this book is meant to be an advanced graduate textbook and not just a reference book or monograph on the subject. This aspect is reflected in the way the cover material is presented, with careful and complete proofs, and precise references to topics in the book.

Book Monte Carlo Simulation Methods for Finite Flat Plate Winding Flows

Download or read book Monte Carlo Simulation Methods for Finite Flat Plate Winding Flows written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This article opts for the use of direct simulation Monte-Carlo methods to solve such problems as those associated with winding flows around flat plates of finite length. The methods in question are ones which go through tracking the movements of simulated molecules by computer in order to realize numerical value simulations. Collision calculations between simulated molecules are determined from statistical samplings. As far as collision models are concerned, respective selections were made for the use of hard sphere molecule models and inverse power law models. As far as simulation molecule and solid wall effects are concerned, option was made for the use of models which are made up from mixtures on the basis of ratios of fully diffused reflection and specular or mirror surface reflection. For the sake of the reliability of empirical test methods, calculations were also done of the one dimensional flow movements associated with such questions and Rayleigh problems and shock wave structures. Two dimensional calculations opted for the use of synchronous parallel programs. Numerical value results clearly showed that direct simulation Monte-Carlo methods were capable of relatively good simulations of a number of problems in rarefied gas mechanics. As far as two dimensional calculations are concerned, the machine time expended and the necessary content are both within ranges permitted by domestic machines. (AN).

Book Computational Fluid Dynamics Review 1998 In 2 Volumes

Download or read book Computational Fluid Dynamics Review 1998 In 2 Volumes written by Mohamed M Hafez and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1998-11-20 with total page 1169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first volume of CFD Review was published in 1995. The purpose of this new publication is to present comprehensive surveys and review articles which provide up-to-date information about recent progress in computational fluid dynamics, on a regular basis. Because of the multidisciplinary nature of CFD, it is difficult to cope with all the important developments in related areas. There are at least ten regular international conferences dealing with different aspects of CFD.It is a real challenge to keep up with all these activities and to be aware of essential and fundamental contributions in these areas. It is hoped that CFD Review will help in this regard by covering the state-of-the-art in this field. The present book contains sixty-two articles written by authors from the US, Europe, Japan and China, covering the main aspects of CFD. There are five sections: general topics, numerical methods, flow physics, interdisciplinary applications, parallel computation and flow visualization. The section on numerical methods includes grids, schemes and solvers, while that on flow physics includes incompressible and compressible flows, hypersonics and gas kinetics as well as transition and turbulence. This book should be useful to all researchers in this fast-developing field.

Book The DSMC Method

Download or read book The DSMC Method written by G. A. Bird and published by . This book was released on 2013-08-19 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Direct Simulation Monte Carlo is a well-established method for the computer simulation of a gas flow at the molecular level. While there is a limit to the size of the flow-field with respect to the molecular mean free path, personal computers now allow solutions well into the continuum flow regime. The method can be applied to basic problems in gas dynamics and practical applications range from microelectromechanics systems (MEMS) to astrophysical flows. DSMC calculations have assisted in the design of vacuum systems, including those for semiconductor manufacture, and of many space vehicles and missions. The method was introduced by the author fifty years ago and it has been the subject of two monographs that have been published by Oxford University Press. It is now twenty years since the second of these was written and, since that time, most DSMC procedures have been superseded or significantly modified. In addition, visual interactive DSMC application programs have been developed that have proved to be readily applicable by non-specialists to a wide variety of practical problems. The computational variables are set automatically within the code and the programs report whether or not the criteria for a good calculation have been met. This book is concerned with the theory behind the current DSMC molecular models and procedures, with their integration into general purpose programs, and with the validation and demonstration of these programs. The DSMC and associated programs, including all source codes, can be freely downloaded through links that are provided in the book. The main accompanying program is simply called the "DSMC program" and, in future versions of the book, it will be applicable to homogeneous (or zero-dimensional) flows through to three-dimensional flow. All DSMC simulations are time-accurate unsteady calculations, but the flow may become steady at large times. The current version of the DSMC code is applicable only to zero and one-dimensional flows and the older DS2V code is employed for the two-dimensional validation and demonstration cases. It is because of this temporary use of the older and well-proven program that the DS2V source code is made freely available for the first time. Most of the homogeneous flow cases are validation studies, but include internal mode relaxation studies and spontaneous and forced ignition leading to combustion in an oxygen-hydrogen mixture. The one-dimensional cases include the structure of a re-entry shock wave that takes into account electronic excitation as well as dissociation, recombination and exchange reactions. They also include a spherically imploding shock wave and a spherical blast wave. The two-dimensional and axially-symmetric demonstration cases range from a typical MEMS flow to aspects of the flow around rotating planets. Intermediate cases include the formation and structure of a combustion wave, a vacuum pump driven by thermal creep, a typical vacuum processing chamber, and the flow around a typical re-entry vehicle
