Book Structural Hot Spot Stress Approach to Fatigue Analysis of Welded Components

Download or read book Structural Hot Spot Stress Approach to Fatigue Analysis of Welded Components written by Erkki Niemi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-08-28 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides background and guidance on the use of the structural hot-spot stress approach to fatigue analysis. The book also offers Design S-N curves for use with the structural hot-spot stress for a range of weld details, and presents parametric formulas for calculating stress increases due to misalignment and structural discontinuities. Highlighting the extension to structures fabricated from plates and non-tubular sections. The structural hot-spot stress approach focuses on cases of potential fatigue cracking from the weld toe and it has been in use for many years in tubular joints. Following an explanation of the structural hot-spot stress, its definition and its relevance to fatigue, the book describes methods for its determination. It considers stress determination from both finite element analysis and strain gauge measurements, and emphasizes the use of finite element stress analysis, providing guidance on the choice of element type and size for use with either solid or shell elements. Lastly, it illustrates the use of the recommendations in four case studies involving the fatigue assessment of welded structures using the structural hot-spot stress

Book Mesh Free and Finite Element Based Methods for Structural Mechanics Applications

Download or read book Mesh Free and Finite Element Based Methods for Structural Mechanics Applications written by Nicholas Fantuzzi and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2021-01-27 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem of solving complex engineering problems has always been a major topic in all industrial fields, such as aerospace, civil and mechanical engineering. The use of numerical methods has increased exponentially in the last few years, due to modern computers in the field of structural mechanics. Moreover, a wide range of numerical methods have been presented in the literature for solving such problems. Structural mechanics problems are dealt with using partial differential systems of equations that might be solved by following the two main classes of methods: Domain-decomposition methods or the so-called finite element methods and mesh-free methods where no decomposition is carried out. Both methodologies discretize a partial differential system into a set of algebraic equations that can be easily solved by computer implementation. The aim of the present Special Issue is to present a collection of recent works on these themes and a comparison of the novel advancements of both worlds in structural mechanics applications.

Book Design of Welded Tubular Connections

Download or read book Design of Welded Tubular Connections written by P.W. Marshall and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although tubular structures are reasonably well understood by designers of offshore platforms, onshore applications often suffer from "learning curve" problems, particularly in the connections, tending to inhibit the wider use of tubes. This book was written primarily to help this situation. Representing 25 years of work by one of the pioneers in the field of tubular structures, the book covers research, synthesis of design criteria, and successful application to the practical design, construction, inspection, and lifetime monitoring of major structures. Written by the principal author of the AWS D1.1 Code Provisions for Tubular Structures this book is intended to be used in conjunction with the AWS Structural Welding Code - Steel, AWS D1.1-88 published by the American Welding Society, Miami, FL, USA. Users of this Code, writers of other codes, students and researchers alike will find it an indispensable source of background material in their work with tubular structures.

Download or read book Fatigue Assessment of Welded Joints by Local Approaches written by Dieter Radaj and published by Woodhead Publishing. This book was released on 2006-10-30 with total page 661 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Local approaches to fatigue assessment are used to predict the structural durability of welded joints, to optimise their design and to evaluate unforeseen joint failures. This standard work provides a systematic survey of the principles and practical applications of the various methods. It covers the hot spot structural stress approach to fatigue in general, the notch stress and notch strain approach to crack initiation and the fracture mechanics approach to crack propagation. Seam-welded and spot-welded joints in structural steels and aluminium alloys are also considered. This completely reworked second edition takes into account the tremendous progress in understanding and applying local approaches which has been achieved in the last decade. It is a standard reference for designers, structural analysts and testing engineers who are responsible for the fatigue-resistant in-service behaviour of welded structures. Completely reworked second edition of a standard work providing a systematic survey of the principles and practical applications of the various methods Covers the hot spot structural stress approach to fatigue in general, the notch stress and notch strain approach to crack initiation and the fracture mechanics approach to crack propagation. Book Fabrication and Fatigue Evaluation of Welded Tee and Tubular Joints for Structures in a Marine Environment

Download or read book Fabrication and Fatigue Evaluation of Welded Tee and Tubular Joints for Structures in a Marine Environment written by and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Report of a program in four separate parts on full penetration T-joints in plates and an assessment of the effects that attachment plate thickness and overall weld profile have on the fatigue life. In Phase I on attachment thickness, 51 T-joints were fatigue tested at constant amplitude bending loads with an R ratio of 0.05, with the crack shape and its development monitored using multi-probe potential drop techniques and beach marking. In Phase II's study of initiation life, 13 cruciform joints with fillet welds deposited by the shielded metal arc process were tested under constant amplitude loading using R ratios of 0 and -1. To establish a simple correlation between stress concentration factors (SCF) and stress intensity factors (SIF) and to develop a method for determination of SIF for semi-elliptical weld toe cracks in Phase III, weld toe SCFs were determined for joint and weld geometries used in the program by finite element methods. Phase IV tested a spare stiffened tubular joint from Phase II in axial loading at various test parameters.
