Book Development of a Method to Predict Transonic Limit Cycle Oscillation Characteristics of Fighter Aircraft

Download or read book Development of a Method to Predict Transonic Limit Cycle Oscillation Characteristics of Fighter Aircraft written by J. J. Meijer and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An analysis of steady wind tunnel data, obtained for a fighter type aircraft, has indicated that shock-induced and trailing-edge separation plays a dominant role in the development of Limit Cycle Oscillations (LCO) at transonic speeds. On this basis, a semi-empirical LCO prediction method is being developed which makes use of such steady wind tunnel data. The preliminary method has been applied to several configurations and has correctly identified those which have encountered LCO. The method has the potential for application early in the design process of new aircraft to determine and understand these non-linear aeroelastic characteristics. The method is still being evaluated and upgrading and refinements are expected from unsteady wind tunnel force and pressure measurements to be obtained from oscillating models as part of an extensive investigation into the aerodynamic nature of LCO. The method will be described in its present form and results of the latest predictions will be compared with flight test trends and used to further assess various parametric effects.

Book Nonlinear Transonic Flutter Prediction for F 16 Stores Configuration Clearance

Download or read book Nonlinear Transonic Flutter Prediction for F 16 Stores Configuration Clearance written by Raymond G. Toth and published by . This book was released on 2003-03-01 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Limit cycle oscillation (LCO) has been an issue for the F-16 since its operational deployment. Configuration validation requires large investments in time and resources due to the very specific and stringent guidelines used during flight test to ensure the aircraft does not encounter classical flutter or excessive LCO. A new approach, incorporating inherent nonlinearities that drive LCO is investigated using the Transonic Equivalent Strip method to account for wing thickness effects and shock structure. The g-method flutter solution is used to include first-order aerodynamic damping effects. Two F-16 store configurations are examined to correlate predicted flutter onset speeds, frequencies, and character with those found in flight test, as well as the aerodynamic effect of modeling underwing stores on the flutter solution. Results show small changes in the tuning of the structural model resulted in large changes in the flutter boundary. The aerodynamic influence of underwing stores proved significant, particularly for the two most outboard wing stations. Most importantly, the character of the instability was predicted by the new method.

Book Modern Wing Flutter Analysis by Computational Fluid Dynamics Methods

Download or read book Modern Wing Flutter Analysis by Computational Fluid Dynamics Methods written by National Aeronautics and Space Adm Nasa and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2018-12-29 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The application and assessment of the recently developed CAP-TSD transonic small-disturbance code for flutter prediction is described. The CAP-TSD code has been developed for aeroelastic analysis of complete aircraft configurations and was previously applied to the calculation of steady and unsteady pressures with favorable results. Generalized aerodynamic forces and flutter characteristics are calculated and compared with linear theory results and with experimental data for a 45 deg sweptback wing. These results are in good agreement with the experimental flutter data which is the first step toward validating CAP-TSD for general transonic aeroelastic applications. The paper presents these results and comparisons along with general remarks regarding modern wing flutter analysis by computational fluid dynamics methods. Book Flutter at Very High Speeds

Download or read book Flutter at Very High Speeds written by Harry L. Runyan and published by . This book was released on 1957 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper is concerned with a discussion of some of the problems of flutter and aeroelasticity that are or may be important at high speeds. Various theoretical procedures for treating high Mach number flutter are reviewed. Application of two of these methods, namely, the Van Dyke method and piston-theory method, is made to a specific example and compared with linear two- and three-dimensional results. It is shown that the effects of thickness and airfoil shape are destabilizing as compared with linear theory at high Mach number. In order to demonstrate the validity of these large predicted effects, experimental flutter results are shown for two rectangular wings at Mach numbers of 6.86 and 3. The results of nonlinear piston-theory calculations were in good agreement with experiment, whereas the results of using two- and three-dimensional linear theory were not. In addition, some results demonstrating the importance of including camber modes in a flutter analysis are shown, as well as a discussion of one case of flutter due to aerodynamic heating.
