Book excerpt: This Festschrift, dedicated to Jan Peleska on the occasion of his 65th birthday, contains papers written by many of his closest collaborators in academic and industry research. After studying mathematics at the University of Hamburg, Jan worked with Philips and Deutsche System-Technik on fault-tolerant systems, distributed systems, database systems, and safety-critical embedded systems. Since 1994 he has worked as a consultant to industry, specializing in development methods, verification, validation and test of safety-critical systems, and since 1995 he has been a Professor of Computer Science at the University of Bremen. In his research he has been most interested in the combination and application of existing methods and corresponding tools to real-world problems, particularly in the field of safety-critical embedded systems and distributed systems, including avionics and railway control systems. The papers in this volume reflect those interests, and the impact he has had on colleagues and collaborators. The volume is structured into sections on testing; railway verification and safety & security; intelligent systems and cyber-physical systems; and tools and techniques for specification, verification and code generation.

Book Leveraging Applications of Formal Methods Verification and Validation

Download or read book Leveraging Applications of Formal Methods Verification and Validation written by Tiziana Margaria and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-11-05 with total page 881 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the conference proceedings of ISoLA 2008, the Third International Symposium on Leveraging Applications of Formal Methods, Verification and Validation, which was held in Porto Sani (Kassandra, Chalkidiki), Greece during October 13–15, 2008, sponsored by EASST and in cooperation with the IEEE Technical Committee on Complex Systems. Following the tradition of its forerunners in 2004 and 2006 in Cyprus, and the ISoLA Workshops in Greenbelt (USA) in 2005 and in Poitiers (France) in 2007, ISoLA 2008 provided a forum for developers, users, and researchers to discuss issues related to the adoption and use of rigorous tools and methods for the specification, analysis, verification, certification, construction, test, and maintenance of systems from the point of view of their different application domains. Thus, the ISoLA series of events serves the purpose of bridging the gap between designers and developers of rigorous tools, and users in engineering and in other disciplines, and to foster and exploit synergetic relationships among scientists, engineers, software developers, decision makers, and other critical thinkers in companies and organizations. In p- ticular, by providing a venue for the discussion of common problems, requirements, algorithms, methodologies, and practices, ISoLA aims at supporting researchers in their quest to improve the utility, reliability, flexibility, and efficiency of tools for building systems, and users in their search for adequate solutions to their problems.

Book Formal Methods for Trustworthy Computer Systems FM89

Download or read book Formal Methods for Trustworthy Computer Systems FM89 written by Dan Craigen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1989 Workshop on the Assessment of Formal Methods for Trustworthy Com puter Systems (FM89} was an invitational workshop that brought together repre sentatives from the research, commercial and governmental spheres of Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The workshop was held in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, from July 23 through July 27, 1989. This document reports the activities, observations, recommendations and conclusions resulting. from FM89. 1. 1 Purpose of Workshop The primary purpose for holding FM89 was to assess the role of formal methods in the development and fielding of trustworthy critical systems. The need for this assessment was predicated upon four observations: 1. Critical systems are increasingly being controlled by computer systems; 2. Existing techniques for developing, assuring and certifying computer-based critical systems are inadequate; 3. Formal methods have the potential for playing the same role in the devel opment of computer-based systems as applied mathematics does for other engineering disciplines; and 4. Formal methods have had limited impact on the development of comput- based systems and supporting technologies. · The goal of the workshop was to complete the following tasks: 1. Assess the problems retarding the development of trustworthy critical systems; 2. Determine the (potential) impact of applying formal methods techniques to the development of trustworthy critical systems; 3. Determine the research and development required to facilitate a broader ap plication of formal methods techniques; 4.

Book FME 93 Industrial Strength Formal Methods

Download or read book FME 93 Industrial Strength Formal Methods written by Jim Woodcock and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1993 with total page 712 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last few years have borne witness to a remarkable diversity of formal methods, with applications to sequential and concurrent software, to real-time and reactive systems, and to hardware design. In that time, many theoretical problems have been tackled and solved, and many continue to be worked upon. Yet it is by the suitability of their industrial application and the extent of their usage that formal methods will ultimately be judged. This volume presents the proceedings of the first international symposium of Formal Methods Europe, FME'93. The symposium focuses on the application of industrial-strength formal methods. Authors address the difficulties of scaling their techniques up to industrial-sized problems, and their suitability in the workplace, and discuss techniques that are formal (that is, they have a mathematical basis) and that are industrially applicable. The volume has four parts: - Invited lectures, containing a lecture by Cliff B. Jones and a lecture by Antonio Cau and Willem-Paul de Roever; - Industrial usage reports, containing 6 reports; - Papers, containing 32 selected and refereedpapers; - Tool descriptions, containing 11 descriptions.

Book Using Event B for Critical Device Software Systems

Download or read book Using Event B for Critical Device Software Systems written by Neeraj Kumar Singh and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-19 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Defining a new development life-cycle methodology, together with a set of associated techniques and tools to develop highly critical systems using formal techniques, this book adopts a rigorous safety assessment approach explored via several layers (from requirements analysis to automatic source code generation). This is assessed and evaluated via a standard case study: the cardiac pacemaker. Additionally a formalisation of an Electrocardiogram (ECG) is used to identify anomalies in order to improve existing medical protocols. This allows the key issue - that formal methods are not currently integrated into established critical systems development processes - to be discussed in a highly effective and informative way. Using Event-B for Critical Device Software Systems serves as a valuable resource for researchers and students of formal methods. The assessment of critical systems development is applicable to all industries, but engineers and physicians from the health domain will find the cardiac pacemaker case study of particular value.
