It is composed of twenty-two alder men, elected annually at the general elec tion in November for the term of one year; three of them are elected from each of the five Senatorial Districts, one from the 23d and 24th Wards, comprising the newly annexed district, and six aldermen zit-large. They take office on the first Monday in January next succeeding their election, and elect their own president from among the members. They have power to enforce, pass, and repeal city ordinances, subject to the approval of the Mayor, and to pass resolutions over his veto by a two-thirds vote. They meet at their own pleasure, usually once a week, in their room in the City Hall. (see also charter OF the city OF new york.) Its alphabetical arrangement, making an index and table of contents unnecessary, is by far the best for ready refer ence. But the stranger, unacquainted with the names of New York's interesting features, needs to be told what to look for. The article on sight-seeing is the one which he should read first. Then under such general headings as art galleries, architectural features, museums, parks, cemeteries, statues, the various denominations of churches, etc., will be found lists of those places and institutions within the city limits, many of which are fully described under their own names. When an address is given by street and number, the street directory will Show where the street is and near what cross-street or avenue the number may be found. When a suburban place is described, the railroad that it is on or near is always named, and under the title railways the location of the depots and ferry-houses of all the roads running from New York city is given. Likewise under the titles steamboats and steamships information is given about lines of travel by water to near-by and more distant places. The article on shopping, and those on dry goods, J EW eley, book-stores, and other classes of goods will also be found valuable to the stranger. There is an extended article on drives and bicycle runs, describing all the desirable routes through the suburban parts of the city.
