Book excerpt: Excerpt from Apple Spraying Experiments in 1914 The apples on the experimental plots were harvested on October 7 and 8 and were immediately sorted into 3 classes, namely, the number of smooth or perfect apples. The number scabby and the number russeted. Except in the case of plot I, the sample from which to obtain this sorting record consisted of 20 barrels of fruit selected at random from the crop produced on the two central rows of trees on each plot. By rejecting the cr0p on the two outer rows it was felt that the effects of the sprays drifting with the wind from adjoining plots was largely eliminated. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Field Experiments in Spraying Apple Orchards The organization for work in these field experiments in spraying apple orchards was designed particularly to avoid or to counteract the difficulties which it was felt certain would be met. Especial care was exercised in choosing orchards which were representative of the sections in which they were located, which were uniform as to variety, age, vigor of trees, and previous soil and spraying treatment, and which were of such size and form as would permit laying out experi mental plats to advantage. The men in charge of these experiments were all graduates of the University of Illinois, or were trained in the Department of Horticulture at this university. All the men were taught similar methods of preparing the standard spray mixtures used in the experiments and all were familiar with the types of spray apparatus used. The results of the data gathered were freely dis cussed by all the men concerned, and from year to year, suggestions were made for the better recording of data and for new lines of work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spraying Experiments and Apple Diseases in 1913 As a rule we have found that with the Ben Davis spray injury from bor-deaux mixture was so severe that it equalled or more than offset the beneficial effects derived from the control of apple scab. While a much better grade of fruit from the standpoint of keeping quality and freedom from disease has been the invariable result from trees sprayed with this mate rial the russeted appearance of the skin materially reduced its market value. In other words, while the injurious effects of bordeaux mixture and certain other sprays upon the fruit of susceptible varieties like the Ben Davis are concerned almost wholly with the appearance of the fruit and not with its keep ing quality or value as an article of food the price it will bring on the market is just as effectually reduced as though the lat ter were the case. If the selling price of apples depended more on the quality of the fruit and less on the appearance of the skin certain of the difficulties now experienced in spraying would disappear.
