Book Origin of New York City s Nickname The Big Apple

Download or read book Origin of New York City s Nickname The Big Apple written by Gerald Leonard Cohen and published by Peter Lang Gmbh, Internationaler Verlag Der Wissenschaften. This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The monograph aims for a comprehensive look at the history of «The Big Apple», incorporating material that has come to light since the first edition of this work was published in 1991. The overall picture now is: Apples, always important, became especially so with the appearance of the Big Red Delicious Apple in Iowa, 1870's. «The Big Apple» therefore came to refer to somebody or something very important. In 1920 an African-American stablehand in New Orleans mentioned in conversation: «We's goin' to 'the big apple'» (NYC racetracks as the big time in horseracing). Turf writer John J. Fitz Gerald overheard this statement and adopted «The Big Apple» (1921ff.) in his columns, popularizing it to refer particularly to the NYC tracks. Secondarily it could refer to big time horseracing in general. In the 1930's «The Big Apple» was picked up by black jazz musicians to designate NYC in general (and Harlem in particular) as the place where the greatest jazz in the world was being played. And in 1971 Charles Gillett revived «The Big Apple» as part of a public-relations campaign on behalf of NYC. Despite the increasingly clear picture of what happened, various incorrect etymologies have arisen about «The Big Apple». The monograph addresses and rejects them in some detail.

Book William Mullan Odd Apples Special Edition

Download or read book William Mullan Odd Apples Special Edition written by and published by Hatje Cantz. This book was released on 2021-09 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A limited, large-format edition of this gorgeous study of apples, featuring a print from the series This large-format (9 x 11.25 inches) special edition of New York photographer William Mullan's (born 1989) Odd Applesincludes a print of the photograph titled Hidden Rosehoused in a pergamin paper sleeve inserted in the book. Mullan's obsession with apples began when he saw his first Egremont Russet at a Waitrose grocery store outside of London. Fascinated by its gnarled, potato-like appearance and shockingly fresh, nutty flavor, Mullan began searching for, and photographing, rare apple varieties. In Odd Apples, each apple is lovingly rendered and styled according to its individual "personality"--a combination of its looks and its flavors. The apples are set against complementary brightly colored backdrops; they are peeled or unpeeled, cut or whole, skin shriveled or perfectly smooth and shiny. Mullan embraces each apple's idiosyncratic aesthetic qualities completely.

Book Good Apple

    Book Details:
  • Author : Elizabeth Passarella
  • Publisher : Thomas Nelson
  • Release : 2021-01-19
  • ISBN : 1400218829
  • Pages : 252 pages

Download or read book Good Apple written by Elizabeth Passarella and published by Thomas Nelson. This book was released on 2021-01-19 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “For a woman who thinks of herself as a New Yorker at this point, I buy a lot of clothes from companies named things like Shrimp & Grits. Why? Because identity is complicated.” Elizabeth Passarella is content with being complicated. She grew up in Memphis in a conservative, Republican family with a Christian mom and a Jewish dad. Then she moved to New York, fell in love with the city—and, eventually, her husband—and changed. Sort of. While her politics have tilted to the left, she still puts her faith first—and argues that the two can go hand in hand, for what it’s worth. In this sharp and slyly profound memoir, Elizabeth shares stories about everything from conceiving a baby in an unair-conditioned garage in Florida to finding a rat in her bedroom. She upends stereotypes about Southerners, New Yorkers, and Christians, making a case that we are all flawed humans simply doing our best. Good Apple is a hilarious, welcome celebration of the absurdity, chaos, and strange sacredness of life that brings us all together, whether we have city lights or starry skies in our eyes. More importantly, it’s about the God who pursues each of us, no matter our own inconsistencies or failures, and shows us the way back home.
