Book Apple Growing in California

Download or read book Apple Growing in California written by Geo; P. Weldon and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-26 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Apple Growing in California: A Practical Treatise Designed to Cover Some of the Important Phases of Apple Culture Within the State The great importance of the apple in our state, the many failures among those who have attempted to grow this fruit, the common opinion that an apple orchard can not be made a paying proposition, and the hopeless neglect and consequent failure to produce what might be beautiful and profitable orchards, together with a dearth of literature on the subject, are some of the things that induced the author to write this little book. It is published with a realization of its incompleteness and possible errors, but if it will in a small way, at least, serve as a guide to future profitable apple culture in California, the efforts put forth will in no way be regretted. While primarily a treatise on apple culture, several of the chapters are designed to teach lessons that will be valuable in the culture of other fruits: For example, chapters on Pruning, Intercropping and Cover Crops. I wish to express thanks to Dr. A. J. Cook, under whose direction the investigations were conducted, and who has at all times cooperated with me in the work. His valuable assistance in reading the manuscript is appreciated. Thanks are also due Prof. A. V. Stubenrauch, Pomologist of the State University at Berkeley, Mr. W. H. Volck, County Horticultural Commissioner of Santa Cruz County and Mr. W.S. Ballard, Pathologist, Fruit-Disease Investigations, United States Department of Agriculture, each of whom kindly read parts of my manuscript; also to Mr. E. J. Vosler. Secretary of the State Commission of Horticulture and Mr. H. S. Smith. Superintendent of the State Insectary, for the same courtesy. For illustrations I am indebted to the State University, Mr. C. B. AYVeks, County Horticultural Commissioner of Tehama County, Mr. O. E. Bremner, County Horticultural Commissioner of Sonoma County, and Mr. J.F. Benton of Arcata. Book Apple Growing Classic Reprint

Download or read book Apple Growing Classic Reprint written by Massachusetts State Board o Agriculture and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-27 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Apple Growing Apple growing in Massachusetts has received a great stimulus within the past five years, largely due to a sudden realization that good apples could be grown here as well as in other parts of the country, and also to the relatively high prices of western apples. Early in the history of Massachusetts, and up to the time of the civil war, apple growing was considered very profitable, but soon after that period insect and fungous pests made their appearance in such numbers that many orchards were either destroyed or allowed to run out. Apple growing thus became an adjunct to general farm ing, and has so remained until the stimulus of western competition began to make itself felt. Apples Should be grown in our State in sufficient quantities to at least supply our own demand, for certainly no spot on this earth was ever more favored for growing this fruit. Soils and climatic conditions are of the best; markets are near and good; and success is assured, provided the grower will exert a reasonable effort. There have been many new orchards planted in the last few years, and many old trees have been renovated and are now bearing good fruit. The young orchards are now supplying some of the very highest quality apples in our markets. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The 1930 Agricultural Outlook for California Classic Reprint

Download or read book The 1930 Agricultural Outlook for California Classic Reprint written by Harry Richard Wellman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-20 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The 1930 Agricultural Outlook for California According to the Federal Outlook Report the apple industry of the United States has made a considerable recovery from the disturbed conditions which accompanied the rapid and excessive expansion of commercial plantings in the Northwest and other sections about 20 years ago. The drastic adjustments which followed this period of over-planting have gradually placed the industry on a sounder economic basis. There are still sufficient young trees in commercial orchards, however, to maintain production at a high level for a period of years, and in seasons when weather and other growing conditions are especially favorable production will be so heavy as to be burden some. In 33 of the states which produce over 90 per cent of the United States apple crop, 25 to 30 per cent of the trees in commercial orchards were less than 9 years old at the beginning of 1928, and 65 to 70 per cent were less than 19 years old. In View of this proportion of young trees in commercial orchards together with the general tendencies toward an increased bearing life and an increased productive capacity per tree, owing to improved orchard manage ment and to the larger proportion of orchards on better locations. It seems reasonable to expect a further increase in commercial produc tion for several years. This prospective increase in commercial pro duction, however, will be partially offset by the declining production in family orchards, which contain nearly one-third of the apple trees in the United States. Book The American Apple Orchard

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Apple Orchard: A Sketch of the Practice of Apple, Growing in North America at the Beginning of the Twentieth Century The apple is the most widely grown of tree fruits; and though it cannot cover quite so great a range of latitude as the plum, it is, after all, more generally known and prized than any other fruit of any longitude or zone. Nevertheless the extreme northern and southern agricultural regions of our continent are practically outside the apple country. Even within the apple country there are great inequalities of distribution. Certain regions are not well adapted to apple culture, while in others this fruit has become the basis of a great industry. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Apples of New York, Vol. 1 General. - I have the honor to transmit herewith Part II of the Annual Report of the New York Agricultural Experiment Station for 1903, to be known as "The Apples of New York." The period of the collection of the data which from the subject-matter of this publication is coincident with the life of the Station, having been begun over twenty years ago by the late Professor Emmet S. Goff, who was the Station's first horticulturist. In 1891 this work passed into the hands of Professor Spencer A. Beach, who is now, fortunately, charged with the presentation to the public of the results of this long-continued and costly effort. In the collection and organization of the information contained in this volume, Professor Beach has had the valued assistance of Professors Wendell Paddock, Charles P. Close, Heinrich Hasselbring and Vinton A. Clark, who have been associated with him in the horticultural department of the Station. Professor Nathaniel O Booth and Mr. Orrin M. Taylor have not only assisted in the collection of original data, but they have rendered efficient service in the immediate preparation of the text. The publication of this volume, which is confined to the writer varieties of apples, to be followed by a second volume covering the early and fall varieties, is made possible by the generous action of the New York legislature of 1904, and should be regarded as an occasion of justifiable pride on the part of the state, the Station management and the individuals chiefly concerned in the work on its professional side. There is every reason to believe that these two volumes will take their place as part of the standard literature of pomology, and will be useful and stimulating to one of the most important industries of the state.
