Book excerpt: Excerpt from Appendix to the Report of the Board of Regents of the Smithsonian Institution: Containing a Report on the Public Libraries of the United States of America, January 1, 1850 The statute of 1844, chapter 106 authorizes school districts to expend a portion of their money in the purchase of books for a district library. The small amount of school money in a majority of the districts, divided and subdivided as they have been, has rendered it inexpedient to divert any portion of it from the ordinary purposes of the school; and for this reason, but little progress has been made. In the formation of school libra ries. - [first report of Secretary of the Board of Education, presented May 25, The secretary in his second report (1848) states that eleven districts had established libraries. In the last report (1849) the secretary says there are but seventeen school district libraries ln the State, containing in all 452 volumes.
