Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Essay on Bathing: With Remarks on the Efficacy and Employment of the Mineral Water, at Ashby-De-La-Zouch and Moira; In Which Are Introduced Several Interesting Cases, &C The discharge of the' task I' have imposed upon myself, I 'am aware, may lay the open to many undeserred impas 'tations; such as a desire to write myself Into notice, or to' raise to unmerited repua tation the mineral Waters at the place where I am practising as a physician. From such charges I 'must 'sol'icit the lie beral-minded'to ahsol've me; and'as for the hostile and illiberal, it matterslittlf What they say. Many useful' remarks, and finuch interesting information have been withheld, by persons of high. At tainments, from the dread of 'unworthy motives being attributed to them. I How: ever amiable this feeling may be, 'i cannot help thinking it reprehensible; it is sacrificing a public benefit to a mistaken delicacy, or to a dread of unmerited attack; but every one who embarks in. The medical profession knows, or ought to know, that 'he has to under-f go an ordeal not the most charitable. It 18 to be regretted, that a marked want of candour and liberality, prevailjjs in the medical department, which ought to be signalized' by a generous and accommodating temper, 'far superior to the petty bickering and rancour which too frequently disgrace it. In a 'profession so complicated, where the health, safety, and lives of individuals arest stake; all private feelings and jar -ring interests oughttogive. Way, to a sincere consideration for the health and welfare of the afilicted. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Essay on the Mineral Waters of Carlsbad

Download or read book Essay on the Mineral Waters of Carlsbad written by Joannes de Carro and published by . This book was released on 1835 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Swiss-born Jean de Carro (1770-1857) studied medicine at Edinburgh with William Cullen, Francis Home, Alexander Monro (secundus), Daniel Rutherford, and James Gregory. He left for Vienna in 1793, creating a large practice, before transferring to Carlsbad in 1826. He published a book in French on the town in 1827, but notes in his preface that, thanks to the popularity of taking the waters at Brighton, more and more British visitors have since been coming to Carlsbad. 'Knowing that hepatic, splenetic, dyspeptic, gravelly, herpetic and gouty cases abound in Great Britain, as indeed more or less every where, many of these invalids have encouraged me to publish an english [sic] description of the place, and a short account of the nature and effect of our waters, and of the various ways of using them, either by drinking, bathing or steam. It will be perhaps be considered a bold undertaking, to write in a language which I learned nearly half a century ago, during my medical studies at Edinburgh. My only wish is to be understood, and I shall never take it amiss, if my reader now and then smiles at a gallicism or a germanism' (p. viii)."--Antiquarian bookseller's description, 2012.
