All of the key people in Boychuk’s life – family, friends, enemies – are there. Boychuk steps up to the podium to make a speech, takes a sip of water, and drops dead. Joanne Kilbourn, in her début as Canada’s leading amateur sleuth, is soon on the case, delving into Boychuk’s history. What she finds are a Bible college that’s too good to be true, a woman with a horrifying and secret past, and a murderer who’s about to strike again.

Book excerpt: For seven weeks in late spring and early summer of 1628, a ghost haunted the modest dwelling of Huguette Roy and her husband in the small city of Dole in the Holy Roman Empire near the French border. Before and after giving birth to her third child, Huguette received visits twice daily from a young woman clothed in white who cleaned her house, eased her pains, and tended her newborn son. Only Huguette could see this apparition, and the haunting aroused curiosity and fear throughout her community. Soon after the spirit departed, a young man from Dole prepared a manuscript in colloquial French to recount Huguette’s experiences, the ghost’s demands, and the event’s orthodoxy. Translators Edwards and Sutch present this primary source in English to allow modern readers to view the spirituality, piety, and daily lives of ordinary people in early modern Europe. Download or read book The Infamous Burke and Hare written by R. Michael Gordon and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2009-10-21 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Body snatchers and grave robbers were the stuff of Victorian lore, but two real-life culprits took the crimes out of shadowy cemeteries and into criminal court. William Burke and William Hare aided Scottish surgeons competing for anatomical breakthroughs by experimenting on human corpses. As the duo evolved from petty theft to premeditated murder, they unwittingly brought attention to the medical practices of the era, leading to Burke's death by hanging. This account not only explores the work of the resurrectionists, it reflects the nature of serial killers, 1820s criminal law, and Edinburgh's early role as a seat of European medical research. Readers interested in the legal aspects of these crimes will find the trial testimony included to be a valuable resource.
Download or read book Currents in Twenty First Century Christian Apologetics written by John J. Johnson and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2008-09-01 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Johnson avoids the standard approach of many apologetic works that seek to "prove," in systematic fashion, that Christianity is true. Rather, he takes the position of orthodox Christianity and looks at various challenges that have been raised against it. For example, should the horrors of the Holocaust force Christian thinkers to alter their view of God's goodness? Is Christianity inherently anti-Jewish for claiming that Jews must embrace Jesus as Messiah? Are revived "hallucination theories" about Christ's resurrection tenable explanations of the birth of the Christian movement? Is the "presuppositional" approach of certain Reformed thinkers useful for doing Christian apologetics? These and similar questions are addressed in this book.

Download or read book Death Real and Apparent written by The Rev. Juan B. Ferreres S.J. and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2012-01-30 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When we cease to breathe and when our heart stops beating, we are to all appearances dead. Almost everyone would judge that we are dead. But has the soul really left the body? Fr. Ferreres draws on medical testimony to show that there is a substantial interval between apparent death and real death. He offers the most convincing of all proofs: countless examples of persons "dead" for some hours, so far as science could ascertain, who later "came back to life". This truth gives rise to grave questions: how long is the usual interval between apparent and real death? How may we be certain when death has occurred? Can the apparently dead patient still hear and understand? What measures can be used to restore life to an apparently dead patient? What can the priest do for the soul if he arrives after the cessation of the vital functions? How long should burial be delayed? Fr. Ferreres's work will rivet every reader's attention and will reward him with information of the greatest usefulness.

This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The common wisdom is that Christians and Muslims should dialogue only about what they agree on. This book takes a different approach. As the author observes, “If we focus only on our common ground, we will miss some of the motivating force of our traditions, because that force derives not only from what we hold in common, but also from those convictions that keep us apart.”
